[AsburyPark] Asbury Park Triathalon Sunday!

2011-06-08 Thread martin_kerri
The Asbury Park Triathalon is coming to town and Second Life Bikes has been
recruited to staff the volunteers. This helps us financially and gives us
great exposure in the race community.

We are looking for people to help us early Sunday morning to pass out water and
marshall the race course. Meeting near Stella Marina at 5am. You will be done
by 9:30am. Being up that early and watching the triathletes is actually fun
and inspiring.

Contact me at ke...@secondlifebikes.org or 732-776-6878 if you can help us,
help the triathalon, help AP. Pass on to any other civic organizations or
groups who could donate their time.

Thanks,
Kerri

[AsburyPark] SheRox Triathlon in AP this weekend!

2010-08-24 Thread martin_kerri
Female athletes take over AP this weekend for the SheRox triathlon. Second
Life Bikes/The Bike Church has taken on the task for providing all the
volunteers for the event. This helps us financially along with giving us
great exposure and partners in the athlete community. It is a huge endeavor
and we are desperately looking for people to help out. We will need people
for different shifts on Saturday between 10-4pm and Sunday morning between
5am-10am.

Help us. Help Asbury Park. Help female athletes.

Email us at st...@thebikechurch.org if you or your friends/family/colleagues
can commit to this.

Whoa Mario! That's not at all what I meant. Just thought I would
start the post a little light-heartedly. Sorry if I offended
anyone.

I do agree with Glenn's suggestion that

I do know that specific requests for help posted to these boards
generally
 get a good response.

And, to cop a phrase from post # 44070, you could have simply
posted a
 request for volunteers
without taking a stab at those who post more frequently here,
without being judgmental about how they spend their time, and
without making assumptions about what they do or don't do during
their spare

I've got some things to help fill your spare time...

Besides always needing volunteers to help kids with homework at

adults from the community up with certain kids to fulfill some
 specific requests and needs.

 Here are some examples

I have one little girl that would learn how to play the
keyboard.
Any musicians out there that could spare some time? She received
a
 small keyboard for her birthday.

A 7th grade boy I know would really like to attend the Marine

Academy in Sandy Hook when he enters high school. I am looking
for
someone who could just tutor him in general now and/or maybe help
prepare him for the entrance exam next year.

There are, of course, many other cases. I know volunteering can
sometimes be an intimidating commitment to get involved with.
These
kids already attend Holy Spirit's after-school program so the
venue
is there and we can work out a schedule that completely suits you.

Hope to hear from some of you. Feel free to let me know if you
have
any specific talents that you would like to share.

Thanks but we were trying to get a fake one that was sitting in
someone's basement old/recycled/unused/unwanted. That's The
Bike Church style.

[AsburyPark] Xtra Xmas tree?

2008-11-20 Thread martin_kerri
Does anybody out there have a spare x-mas tree? The Bike Church wants
to participate in the tree-decorating exhibit for non-profits that is
going to take place in the Shoppes in the Arcade during the month of
December. Hopefully, someone will come through with one or we'll have
to start constructing one out of old spokes

[AsburyPark] Stuff wanted....

2008-07-09 Thread martin_kerri
Our old, crappy but faithful charcoal grill was stolen from the
parking lot of Holy Spirit Church recently. Somebody must have
brought it to a scrap metal place for cash because I can't imagine
anybody wanting it. If anyone, has one for us, please contact me
directly.

Also, The Bike Church is going on many trips this summer on our bikes.
This week we went fishing. Next week we are going to play tennis.
So, we are in need of poles and rackets. Seems like stuff that might
be hanging around in people's basements

And, of course, we always welcome bikes, parts and helmets

Thanks,
Kerri Martin

[AsburyPark] Bicycle helmet safety

2007-07-27 Thread martin_kerri
The Brain Injury Association of NJ will be visiting The Bike Church on
Monday, July 30th. They will be giving a presentation geared towards
kids about the importance of wearing a bicycle helmet. It starts at
4:30pm and will last 30-40 minutes. All are welcome. The Bike Church
is located next to Holy Spirit Church - 705 2nd Avenue. The
presentation will take place outside. In the event of rain, we will
move to the basement of the rectory.

Anyone attend the ZB last night ?

 Werner

Werner-
Here is some of the testimony from Tuesday night:

The former chief of police of Morristown who now lives down here
applauded the shelter. Similiar to the testimony of the current
chief of police in Morristown who gave testimony a couple weeks ago.
They have many more problems coming out of the bars and gangs in
Morristown than they do at the Mission.

There were also a couple former homeless AP men who spoke. One who
went to Morristown for help because he couldn't get the help he
needed here in AP. Both men have their lives together now thanks to
shelters.

Father Bill of Holy Spirit spoke about coming together to help solve
the problem of homelessness and making these men part of our
community.

Several residents talked about their reasons for moving to AP and
they want to keep the town a mixed population: black/white,
rich/poor, gay/straight, renter/home-owner.Since AP isn't
creating more affordable housing, we are just continuing to force
more people into homelessness.

SUFA said that they are not against the homeless shelter just against
some of the policies. So we'll just work on changing some of the
policies. However, unless we turn AP into federal property, the
Mission is not allowed to perform background checks. And say they
could? What should we do with a AP man who may be an ex-con who is
living under the boardwalk?
