[AsburyPark] Re: On Asbury....
In response to both Sharon and Debbie I too am sorry about your dogs, and my heart goes out to you. I too can't have dogs where I live and I am saddened by it as I lost my dog too. Debbie, wonderful piece in APP about Yappy Hour. What a great idea and you do great work for all the animals. America needs to get over its non pet friendly spaces and get with the European way. Even in Canada you see doggies in shops and pubs! CH is great! My daughter came for a visit not too long ago and she loved the changes on the BW. We spent some time in CH and and thought the ambiance was a welcome transformation. What is wrong with some people! Kudos to Madison Marquette ! --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, sharon_b283 [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Sorry Debbie, that I didn't respond about the Yappy hour! I can't have pets here, so I sort of by-pass the pet stuff. I also lost 2 animals, so I detour away from having to remember them. Pets are like children. They ask so little and are loyal as hell! The last time I was at your place, I sat outside where all the pets were, loved it, then thought about my 2 lost doggies, that I loved as much as my kids. I use to cook beef stew and mix it with the dry, for a real treat. Brown hamburger with seasonings and mix it in with the dry, for my shepard! He did everything but talked! He was so big the little kids would climb on his back and ride him! He sort of ruled our little cul-de-sac. Neighbors used to borrow him and walk him! The Community Dog! He'd try to climb onto the school bus to follow my youngest to her middle school! I've sang to my dogs, ran with them when I was able and acted like a plain old fool! I love what you do for animals, Debbie and admire you for it. Being around pets depress me, as my last 2 pets were lost to me. Someone stole one and the other was found dead. I ache, when I think of what they went through, so again, I hope you understand. Authorities seem reluctant to help you as they are only seen as animals, but to me it was like losing a relative. Going to go into Convention Hall Debbie and give it a once over on my own. --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, Debbie DeLisa debbiedelisa@ wrote: I think it is very sad that this group has focused all of their time and energy on politics and judgemental comments on Madison Marquette and the City Council. On Monday the Asbury Park Press ran a 2 page article on the Doggy Yappy Hour at The Wonder Bar. Not one person from this group mentioned it or took the time to comment on it. This is what brings our community together---Positive events we can share with others from our neighborhood and out of town. It is not about drinking---I don't drink--it is about comraderie and being able to share quality time with a pet who shows unconditional love. As I was advised by a member, Xanadu has a similar style. Well, not to belabor the obvious, but Asbury Park isn't New York or Montreal, nor is it even Route 3. When a tourist visits New York or Montreal, they expect funky, wild, potentially garish uses of non- traditional materials. But even in those cities, tourists expect to see funky, wild, and potentially garish in certain neighborhoods, not on Strivers Row or in Old Montreal. Both cities cover hundreds of square miles and both have enough room to fit both the edgy and the historic. In one square mile Asbury Park, shipping containers on the most popular pedestrian thoroughfare in town will have a much greater aesthetic (and economic) impact on the city as a whole than containers on an abandoned wharf or in a Brooklyn parking lot. This is mearly a comment on design. I would argue it's also a comment on sensitivity and recognition. If, in fact, the developers are pointing to those cities and other metropolitan areas as justification, it shows a disconnect between the trendiness encouraged in architecture school and the reality on the ground. Several years ago, wasn't the old line in favor of the condos It works in Miami? Well, Asbury Park isn't Miami. It's not NYC or Montreal. It's not even Santa Monica. MM and the Partners really need to spend more time not just walking up and down Asbury Park's boardwalk, but also on other towns' boardwalks, to see what works and what doesn't. They need to not just accept, but embrace, the very un-metropolitan look and feel (and allure) of coastal Monmouth County. They need to closely study the history of Asbury Park's architecture with an eye toward scale and density. The 5th Avenue Pavilion is a perfect example of something that was doubtless edgy when it debuted (still is, in a way), but never felt temporary. Asbury Park has endured several half-assed projects over the past 25 years (Maharishi at the Berkeley, skate park in the Casino, Vinyl) After all that time, and with all the recent accomplishments, the citizens and other investors deserve better. I respect those who are taking the opportunity to open a business on the bw for a reasonable price...I just think that another form of structure would be better suited for the facade of the boardwalk. Not a minority opinion, I'd bet. Thanks for the support sandpiper! Just to clarify, I mentioned the more urban examples of container shops to show contrast, which you understood! Did it cover just the area of the dance party? Or was it up all the way between CH and the Casino? Or even halfway? I guess if it was just cordoning off a few dozen feet that's okay, but it wouldn't send the best message if they start limiting the view of the Atlantic to the privileged few. But again, the crowds were good. Are those wood boards on top of the oceanside wall of the First Avenue Pavilion going to become anything? I hope they're not sticking a permanent bus shelter type overhang there. Retractable awnings would be better. Corazza needs a more lively color too. Maybe aquamarine for the Blue Bishops? Re: The shipping containers. I love a good Cuban sandwich (Zafra in Hoboken...m). But all the fake palm trees and colorful umbrellas in the world won't make these things look any less temporary and, thus, schlocky. There's been talk of reviving the Circuit. Wouldn't putting some of these businesses on Kingsley go a long way toward that end? They tore down the Flamingo anyway. They have the space. And what's going on with that blue shack behind the Pony that's been falling in on itself for 30 years? These businesses could occupy those spaces, you get the ratables plus foot traffic a block back, and you wouldn't lose the sightlines or airflow from the boardwalk. But so as not to end on a downer, the Beach Bar looks very nice and it's heartening to see so many people and so many businesses in the CH arcade. Reminds me of the old classic car and boat shows there. (hopefully they'll bring those back. Along with the organ concerts http://www.ogcma.org/pages/organrecitals ! [AsburyPark] Asbury Park Metal Container Shops
I'm going to Rant so be prepared folks! I live in Asbury Park. Lots of good things are happening here finally. Unfortunately I need to complain and I do that very well so I'll refrain from whining. Some background. I am a City Planner by education. I took many classes on Architecture and Urban Design . The focus of 3 Senior papers in college was Waterfront Development, so I have the credentials to complain. I haven't printed pics yet, but who ever heard of using shipping containers painted white as storefronts? My God they are hideous!!! They dot the vacant spots between the pavillions (which are looking great by the way) I am not sure how much the rent is for these hideous containers whatever it may be is too much. I took a walk with my boyfriend this morning to get a first hand look at the progress. I wanted to give the developers time to get things rolling and be objective when I viewed the boardwalk. I'm sorry but whatever good feelings the improvements on the pavillions impart, they are immediately crashed by these god awful trash boxes. Ugh! In a few weeks, you will have to pay to park for the boards and beach : 50c /hr. I think patrons will need alot more to draw them to the beach and stay while paying 50c/hr for shipping box shopping. Just a thought. Another criticism: try having shops open at 7:30 am... lots of people are on the boards, running , walking , biking . Get some of the foot traffic $$$. I sure was thirsty and could have used an ice drink or even a breakfast sandwich. There is a restaurant at the end of the boards that is open year round (good idea) . I love the miniature golf course. It looks great and people are using it. I'll be there next weekend!! I can't golf , but I love mini golf. They are still building the waterpark...can't wait for that either. Good things coming there. Yes Virginia, there is a new Asbury Park. But it needs some help!!! I love this town. It is coming back is better than ever. But Visuals speak a thousand words.. get rid of the shipping containers asap! In my opinion, Asbury Park is becoming gentrified in the name of money, just like everyplace else in this country. To me, it would be nice if we preserved our heritage rather then constantly feeling the need to rebuild it. It's pretty hard to see the 200 years of history we have here because we love to tear it down. That's another reason I love Europe. At least when I go there I can see history. Here in the USA, we're awash in crappy pedestrian architecture that lines our highways and cities. I've said this many times before, but it's getting to the point in America where you could wake up in virtually any given place and have no idea where you are because it's all starting to look the same. \--- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, dougandcathy_mcqueen dougandcathy_mcqueen@ wrote: Social Commentary: Yes Art:Maybe Illegal:Definitely To say that it's not malicicious to destroy someone else's property (even public property) by spraypainting on it without their permission is ridiculous! That's just as senseless as those who feel it's OK to throw litter in public, but not in their own yard. I get the whole social commentary thing, but where does it stop? What if someone else decided to undertake a vast array of other crimes as part of a social commentary, like lighting fires, shooting out street lights, or sending internet viruses? Instead of breaking the law (for which the artist should be fined), the artist should seek a productive outlet for his art. I would suggest approaching the city or the owners of other property he's defaced to see if they'll pay him to do a legitimate piece. Meanwhile, the graffiti (even if it is social commentary) continues to leave Asbury stuck with the downtrodden look that it has had for years, which leads residents and visitors to beleive that this place can't overcome its past. Or here's another idea for an art piece: we can dress our graffiti artist up in a bright orange jumpsuit, and have him spend the day scrubbing paint from public property. This would be a social commentary on how everyone is contributing to make Asbury Park a better place. It'll be great! With all due respect, there was a Historic Program with teeth associated with the Palace Amusements... It was designated a National Historic Site. That did not preclude the Asbury Demolition Partners from demolishing a historic building. Yahoo! Saving something like that requires both good intentions and the financial resources and business plan that will fund it's restoraton and deliver profits once that's done. I don't remember hearing of any real interest out there. I'm not making a statement here about whether it should have been saved or not, just wondering if there was ever any real solutions that would have saved it. x With all due respect, there was a Historic Program with teeth associated with the Palace Amusements... Well to the best of my recollection there were groups who were interested in preservation and restoration. But every building which anyone had an interest in preserving was included in the waterfront redevelopment plan. Once the area was included in the plan, the jurisdiction and control fell to the Master Developer. There have been many lawsuits filed on behalf of individual developers who wished to preserve buildings in their historic character, but were denied that ability by the courts. Ultimately, you see the results: many buildings with character and history who fell to the wrecking ball. Sad indeed. Yahoo!
