Something struck me as odd; calling Howard Zinn an American hater!
WHAT? As though disagreeing with this fascist government, hating
America? What happened to the First Amendment? I'm so glad that my
generation QUESTIONS authority, small a!

Most times the authority you disagree with is one, corrupt, two,
hiding the truth or three, in bed with someone! Capice? Just open
the Press and you'll either read that someone in the Bush
Administration is hiding something, committed a
crime/treason/ torture/wire- taps/conspiracy, etc. Name your situation,
it's all there!

Then read about corrupt NJ politicians, who not only abound here in
Monmouth County, but the other 20 counties as well! I rest my case!
Good piece Mario.

Re: [AsburyPark] Re: Gannett Co. Inc. has eliminated 206 positions

2008-12-05 Thread lightgrw
As a former publisher, I give Tri City full props for making it this
far; however, I doubt many in business would think a good business model
would be to charge the same price for advertising today as they did for
their first issue 7 or 8 (however long its been) years ago.

I say this because paper costs have increased, printing costs have
increased, ink has increased, trucking fees (to bring the paper and
supplies) has increased...

When they say they are undercharging for advertising, they mean it. I
doubt many businesses could make a living without any price increases in
this much time - especially if their industry had costs rise so
significantly.

the tri city is like the net

publish a bit of content, give it away for free to be paid for with
ads price what is perceived to be cheap.

Each page is looked at as is this page profitable for me to produce..

Ad revenue vs content vs cost of production per page.

 The Internet.

There's lots of business models that don't make sense and you
wonder how they make money.

You're a smart guy and there's no reason you should be a former
publisher. Broaden your horizons and think differently.

You, as a journalist / writer, should be looking at creative ways to
publish on the Internet...I think you're sitting on it and don't even
know it.

Sometimes people have sources of income and the business they run
is for the sake of needing something to do.

And as far as the TriCity goes, I think they are still missing an
opportunity - like putting their archives online.

Sure it's limited to 26 weeks, but there's more.

2. Medical benefits. I you are not insured, there are programs and

6. Food banks, food stamps

Yes! Let's just have everyone in an information ghetto, where they
only read what they want to hear by people who already agree with
them! Perfect!

Gannett eliminates positions at New Jersey newspapers

  December 3, 2008

  .

Gannett Co. Inc. has eliminated 206 positions at its six newspapers
 in New
Jersey due to declining advertising revenues and the severe economic
downturn afflicting the state and the nation.

The company began notifying the affected employees Tuesday at the
 Daily
Record, the Asbury Park Press in Neptune, the Courier-Post in
 Cherry Hill,
the Home News Tribune in East Brunswick, the Courier News in
 Bridgewater and
  the Daily Journal in Vineland.

The economic downturn we are facing is severe and is expected to
 last
throughout next year, said Thomas M. Donovan, president and
 publisher of
the Asbury Park Press and vice president of Gannett's East
 Newspaper Group.
We have reduced expenses significantly throughout this year. But,
unfortunately, as we looked ahead to economic forecasts for 2009,
 it became
clear that we needed to make further reductions.

Employees who were laid off received severance benefits
 commensurate with
  their years of service.

the tri city is like the net

publish a bit of content, give it away for free to be paid for with
ads price what is perceived to be cheap.

Each page is looked at as is this page profitable for me to produce..

Ad revenue vs content vs cost of production per page.

The Internet.

Exactly!

I dubbed triCity a plog short for printed web log.

The paper adopts the name.

It's the future.

I welcome it.

I agree, John.

And I could go on about the need for serious professional journalism and a
citizenry with enough media literacy to sort through all media including
bloggers.

Instead I posted my subjective thoughts about some local blogging to the
politics group here: http://tinyurl.com/5oukwo
