[Assam] Prison for Mamoni Goswami?

2007-03-30 Thread Ram Sarangapani

Dear Himen da,

I hope you are doing well.

After Chandan da wrote of him hearing about MPs recommending prison for
Goswami, I did spend some time is trying to find out if this was just a
rumor.

After some searching, I DID find a reference about one MP suggesting as
such. Now, I don't know if that news item itself is true or not, but
nevertheless, it does seem that there was some news like that, so Chandan da
could have just picked the news item.
( I tried to relocate the same item, I wasn't able to find it - sorry about
that. If I do, I will send that link over)

In any case, my take on this whole thing is, that no MP or Governor or any
one should have that kind of authority (if an MP did recommend as such).

I only take exception to some portraying her as a liason or a peace broker,
which she is not. The GOI/GOA would lose face if they were to try putting
her in prison on such flimsy grounds- because it would be wrong if they did.

Dear Ram,

There is no point in starting a discussion on a topic based on a news
which
is a lie. By originating this lie, Mr. Chandan Mahanta has committede a
crime. He is deliberately hurting Mamoni by spreading this baseless news.

Mr. Chandan Mahanta has displayed his lack of any sense of responsibility
many times in the past in the assamnet. It is high time for the assamnet
to
take action.

Mr. Chandan Mahanta must declare under oath from whom he heard this lie.

With the best wishes,
Himendra

I have heard that the Congress MPm from Guahati has recommended that
Mamoni R. Goswami be sent to oprison for serving as an intermediary
between
ULFA and GoI or something to that effect.

Does anyone have any info. on that? I have not seen any mention of that
in
the web version of the English language newspapers.

Would appreciate any help from netters who know.

C'da,

I seriously doubt if any MP with brains will put forward such a proposal
(send her to prison because she was an intermediary).

As far as the news itself, it is possible that some may be trying
desperately to put some traction on the peace talks. So, raising such a
bogey, some may hope, would build up a general consternation in the state.
Public attention, has been drawn elsewhere, so it might be beneficial in
some quarters to get the public 're-focussed' if you will.
I could be wrong, but this looks more like some rumor with little basis.

BTW: MRG was a spokeswoman for ULFA, pretending to be an intermediary.
Why make her look like something she wasn't?
