Layer-3 switching won't add any value unless your network is rather
large and you already have a need to segment it into broadcast domains.
I do a fair amount of professional network performance work and we've
actually been involved with a flat (layer-2 only) switched network
that has over 900 active non-voip devices. Adding a couple of voip
devices (for testing only) into the mix resulted in excellent quality.
But, all of that depends upon how well managed the network is in the
first place.

Shawn

If you can pick up say a 3com or HP POE (proper 802.3af switch NOT an injector) switch
together with 3cnjvoip-cpod POE adaptors for the Cisco 7940/7960 phones you won't need
a power brick for each phone and you also get a L3 switch thrown in (If you want to
get funky also look out for 3com NJ200/NJ220(US) or NJ205/NJ225(EU) wall switches).

You'll get cost savings and better network management if implemented properly.

Subject: [Asterisk-Users] Cisco 79xx series IP phones

I got a call from our Cisco rep today saying that they couldn't sell
just phones to anyone because if "my ethernet isn't to exact spec..."
then they won't work at all. I've read over the Wiki documentation and
it seems that the 79xx series phones work with Asterisk. They told me
that without a Cisco phone system in place or a Cisco router or switch,
then the ethernet wouldn't work with the phones. Is this true, or is it

someone just trying to sell me a Cisco system?

I don't see how my use of a Planet or Netgear switch would alter the
spec of my ethernet to cause a IP phone to fail. Seems far fetched to
me. I've never had any other problems mixing Cisco equipment with other

product lines.

Does anyone have any knowledge or experience to give me dealing with
Cisco 7902G and 7905G IP phones and getting them to work on a lan with
Asterisk when *not* using other Cisco hardware?

Cheers,

They're either trying to sell more Cisco hardware, or they're trying to
lessen their own support burden. Either way, don't worry too much. My
7940 is plugged into a cheap Netgear switch right now, and it works
fine. It was plugged into a Linksys WET-11 802.11b bridge before that,
and it had problems, but so did ever other 802.11 device in the house.
Too much interference from an unknown source.

Power over Ethernet *might* be iffy if you have an older non-G Cisco
phone and a standards-based PoE switch, but that's about it.

Oh, and next time, don't start a new thread by replying to a message in
an existing thread and then deleting the subject and body; it screws up
threaded mail readers.

Shawn,

Just to back Brian up. I totally agree with his comments. I guess where they
are coming from, but, what they are saying is total rubbish. They work
superbly with asterisk. There can be QoS issues with cheaper switches, this
can affect all any real-time media, maybe they do not want the association
being made woth the Cisco phone.

Best regards

Steve Beaumont

Shawn,

That's a complete load of manure. I have an office full of 7960's, they
work great with asterisk with the SIP images loaded. I'm about to pick
up a lot of 7912's (simple one line phones, same as the 7905 but it has
a built in switch). These phones have also been confirmed to work with
Asterisk.

I would recommend not going directly to cisco, and just find a reseller
who can offer you the phones preloaded with SIP images, or the phones +
the smartnet contracts so you can get the images and firmware from cisco
yourself!

I've tried a *lot* of phones with Asterisk, and thus far, the Cisco's
