Re: Ensign report to the Iphone!

Well developing for android is as I understand a much more tricky  thing than with ios, due to the need to support multiple devices and configurations and such, I have also heard that developers have problems getting  talkback to proeperly support html pages in programs, which is very  dire. Well I've heard there are problems supporting talkback due to it's handling of html pages outside google  chrome, as well as the many devices where as whatever else Apple have done Vo is a very good screen reader when it works. Actually the Ensign is awsome sinse it's the sequel to A Dark room, a  very  acclaimed game from a developer selling to sighted players, which then became playable due to the developer adapting it to work with vo, so I'd recommend everyone give it a try to support  that effort, apart from the fact the game itself is highly addictive. The Ios thing does sound bad, though I don't know wha
t generation of devices have stopped supporting Ios 7, sinse my Iphone  5 is nearly two years old and still working  fine.

Re: Castaways contest, with cash prizes!

You know, I might try that next time. I just gave a second go that did beat my first though, by making better use of tomes and better wall placement as well as a few trial runs to see where the goblins appeared first. I also think I picked my perks better - I was quite right, flower power is overkill, still ended up with way more bread than I needed, even with 48 (!) molding toward the end, so I chose union smasher instead. Also dropped green thumb in favor of strong swimmers, and I did enjoy the use of the two extra people, which were no bother at all to feed, especially once I had a chef and innkeeper. Still kept strong start as my starter, I doubt I'm ever going to change that, at least on this map. Defender sucks IMO as that one knight cannot hope to fend off goblins fast enough, compared to getting a strong start and getting the first crucial wall up straightaway. Brain
food is tempting and a free 1000 points, and unlike defender the points will actually help with productivity too, but that strong start is just too good to pass up. Smuggled goods is ok but I'd rather get my buildings up quickly and have those resources replenishing anyway. Hermaphrodite... I get enough pregnancies on other maps even without that (and even with Trojan man up!) so no.But will definitely try your suggestion about building then smashing up houses - for some reason I never think to destroy buildings, but I can see how it would help here. Those extra people could come in handy, especially at the part where my peasants kept doing other things instead of what I wanted which was taking those 3 pieces of leather that were clearly ready to the monastery right next door... again, destroying or at least closing buildings could have gained me a few more points here. Ah well.Oops, I have rambled. Past my bed time at that. But I hope someone gains something out
of that mass of text. Good night, don't let the goblins bite!

If i remember right, DSL speeds are slightly degrated depending on distance.  This may not be the case now due to technology changes, however, this is something I reember reading in a networking course I took eight years or so ago.  So, if you're right next door to the DSL, then, you'll get better speeds than someone five miles away.  Seven is pretty close to 8, so, if it were me I wouldn't quibble.  If it's closer to six more often, then, calling and asking yoru ISP might fix the issue.

Re: How much does spelling matter

I think that posting a topic or a reply on a topic spelling matters a bit less.  This is a more conversational forum and about games -- so, not as professional.  The news and database, however, in my oppinion, are slightly different.  To me, the people updating said news items and database items are representing the Audiogames.net site.  Many people who may visit the site might simply wish to read up on a new game or keep up with the news.  Since these are more professional and more important, I believe that it should be at least representable and ran through a spellcheck.  Does it affect the blind community as a whole?  Maybe not, considering the nature of the site.  Does it affect the integrity of the Audiogames site?  Yes, due to the lack of care when entering information in the more professional and important areas here.

How much does spelling matter

Today I decided to reacquaint myself with the database submission guidelines penned by Dark. In the course of reading them, I noticed the abundance of spelling mistakes that he made without bothering to correct. These mistakes show up in most of the other lengthy posts he writes, as well as in more public items that appear in the main site including news posts, reviews of games in the database, database info pages such as the info on game genre page, etc. The latter items are extremely restricted for a reason, because we don't want any random person posting stuff on the main site for all to see. I am not trying to troll Dark or any other blind person who consistently spells words, especially the same ones, incorrectly, but it does seem like the fact that these mistakes consistently appear, even on official pages that non-forumites will see, such as the info on game genre page, may perhaps detract from the overall site's quality and also could tarnish the reputation of th
e blind online community, or at least the blind online gamer community. Really, I feel that it should not be hard to at least run the posts through the spell checker; listening to it with your screen reader won't cut it. Of course the spell checker will flag false positives such as Dynoman, but I will say from experience that spelling mistakes, even seemingly minor ones, exponentially detract from the quality of written text. It makes the writer seem less intelligent than he is, or at least it shows a certain sloppiness that cannot easily be ignored. Some commonly misspelled words and their correct spellingsExamples of incorrectly spelled words (most of these are taken from Dark's writings, but there are some other common errors from other posters here too)Note: the incorrectly spelled word(s) are followed by a colon, and then the correct spelling.boppit: bop-it or bop itbrordcast: broadcastdevelope: developpuzle: puzzleSterio

2014-08-22 Thread AudioGames . net Forum — Development room : tward via Audiogames-reflector

Re: Pure basic: has anyone ever heard of, or used it?

Frastlin, yes, in C it is totally possible to import other people's code into your project. that is the entire point of libraries and header files. Header files and libraries is the way in which C programmers import or include code others have written into their project. That's precisely how my game engine works. I include the proper header files, proper libraries, and bingo I have got what I need to build a basic game ready to go.I know you are really new to programming, have little experience outside of Python, but this is precisely why you should explore languages like C. This would give you a foundational understanding of programming at the lowest common denominator , and will teach you better programming habits and concepts. C is a lot less forgiving in some cases than Python so you have to be a more advanced programmer to use it effectively. However, getting back to your point about including other people's code to perform your random generation y
ou would start by including the stdlib.h header, probably get the current system time using the functions in time.h, seed the random generator, and use the rand() function to generate a random number. It is a little more involved than in Python, but the whole point is that most C compilers come with a built-in rand() function and if you want a better random generator you can write your own or borrow a better one from a library. Including other people's code in C programs is a simple process. As for the C verses C++ debate I won't take a stand on that argument. Myself personally I tend to use C++ more because I was taught C++ first, and was trained in object orientated programming. However, since I knew C++ I eventually taught myself C, and I think both C and C++ both have their place in a developer's toolkit. Ultimately it comes down to preference for me.As for your comment about Unix being written in Python your not even close. The Unix kernel is written
in straight C as is various Unix-like variants such as FreeBSD, Linux, and Mac OS. It is not even possible to write a kernel, drivers, etc in Python. Python is more geared for application development and scripting rather than the kind of low-level programming required for operating system kernels, drivers, etc.As for writing applications in C its not really that difficult if you know C well. Most of the applications for Linux, for example, are written from the ground up in C. A few are written in C++, some are written in Python, but I'd say the lion's share of apps are C.As for porting NVDA to Linux I seriously hope you are being rhetorical. The answer to your question is its not possible without an absolute rewrite from scratch. The way NVDA works and the way Orca works are totally different, and the accessibility of Windows and Linux are very very different as well. You'd be better off donating your time to Orca development and developing/testing it to
make it a better screen reader.Ethin, please, chill out man. I can't help but think your explosion and tirade in post 57 was way over the top. I realize you like Pure Basic,, want to defend it, but your issue with Kamlorn is one of perspective. Its clear you two can't agree to disagree, but I find your reaction to his comments more irritating than anything Kamlorn has said.To put a different spin on this debate I think a lot comes down to how advanced someone is. How long someone has been programming. I myself have been programming in C and C++ since 1999,, that's 16 years, and thus I tend to favor those languages from my skills,  education, and experience. Its natural that something like Pure Basic which was obviously designed for beginners isn't going to appeal to me. I get the feeling, reading between the lines, Kamlorn is something of a more advanced developer than you and Pure Basic is for him a turn off. The two of you can't agree be
cause you are at different ends of the programming perspective, and see different advantages and disadvantages in the languages you are using. As for your challenge if I had the time I could easily write a game in C++ with all the features the DM Alpha has, and in a sense I have already done that since Mysteries of the Ancients was written in C++. I take your point about difficulty, but you aren't proving anything by that challenge. To you writing a game in C++ is much harder for you because you probably aren't as familiar with it as Kamlorn or I am so from your perspective C++ is really hard. I personally don't think so because I have been developing software, a lot more than just games in it, for roughly 16 years so I would consider such a challenge to be fairly easy for me personally. Finally, I found your over all message in post 57 to be really unprofessional and not a constructive criticism of Kamlorn's points. I don't think he was trying t
o convert anyone to C or C++, but to point out what he finds useful in those languages. If that offends you I'm s

Re: Pure basic: has anyone ever heard of, or used it?

Here is a whole section onUsing dlls in python directlyextending python with C or C++cythonPyPyand there are all kinds of JIT compilers for making python code faster. But there is a reason why python's real name is CPython, and I'm not sure why that is, other than it was written in C and many many functions (xrange being the most well-known one) that are directly called from a C program. If you do the following, you can see some difference in python's performance:import times = time.clock()for a in range(5000):    if a == "fred":        print "yes"    elif a == "Jan":&n
bsp;       print "Yes"    elif a == "love":        print "No!"print "This lasted %s seconds" % (time.clock() - s)Then run it as xrange(5000). You get a nice one second speed gain! LOLSo does good algorithm creation come with experience or would learning C really help? That is what I'm facing now, how to make the best algorithms all the time!

Your methid is exactly what I do when i'm developing a game. What I tend to do is if i'm doing something in which i'm not sure the community will like, I will get it to a playable state and release an early concept demo. It mostly has an incomplete storyline, but what I do then is expand on the storyline each update so that everytime an update comes out, people can always expect something story wize unless I say it was just a quick patch fix. This methid appears to have worked out quite well for me, because since I started developing games because I always test each bit of story that gets added, I have only had to release a patch for my game 2 or so times. 1 for death match v2.0 when I was still coding in bgt, and 2 for snow race simpply because beta 4 had quite a few nasty bugs.

What i've found though is that as long as your game works, and you've at least tested it, it won't matter how messy the code, the players will still play it.

Re: Pure basic: has anyone ever heard of, or used it?

Yes, there are a couple programs that can run on both python 2 and 3. I think they may use several try statements, but python 3 is going back to the function calls, everything is a function! You can do the totally understated named arguments for everything! Why don't other languages use named arguments?def hello(name="fred, text="world"):    print("Hello, I am %s and I say: %s" % (name, text))hello(text="This is my really awesome text!", name="Sam")and it runs just perfectly! Most people have told me to go for C++ as a C language, and C++ is much easier to run on Windows, so that is what I will probably go for.How interchangeable is C and C++?Are they like python 2 and 3? or bigger than that? What language will help me best in creating algorithms and good
practices? Is that C? Because, frankly, a lot of my programming now is kind of trile and error. As I talk to people, learn more and read more, better modules I end up writing. It is so bad sometimes that I end up going back through my whole game and rewriting it to fit a new, smaller and more easy-to-handle engine.Although, I've done that several times with the game I've been working on since December and it is still a concept demo... I think though that I should just finish something with the bad code and put it out as a concept. If people like it, I can restructure it. If not, I can trash it and do something different! How have other people dealt with this problem? Is it a common difficulty?

Re: an internet speed question

DSL speed depends on how close you are to the exchange and how modern the cabling between you and the exchange is. When they say up to that's the potential maximum, that said I was told my package was 16mbps maximum and I'm above that because the real maximum for ADSL2+ is 24mbps. There's also the contention ratio to consider where multiple people share the same slot of bandwidth on the local exchange, some ISPs offer low contention ratio DSL packages to reduce the impact of this.If the situation between providers where you are is that distinct you may wish to use the cable company simply on grounds of better support, that call of course is up to you though.

I really want to play the pokemon stage since I'm a fan of pokemon, and I really wish that I don't need to go through other stages of yours, which is quite hard btw. No offence, but there are so many stages in remnent and all of them is locked. I can't afford to go through so many of them just to play 6 stages (The pokemon stages). Again, no offence. Thank you!

Re: grave of redemption: concept demo

using double weapons is actually really hard to do. In the normal entombed game there was a small chance you could use double weapons; this chance could be increased with the dual wield skill. My game will eventually have such a skill. But right now, use your most powerful weapon in your main hand, and equip something that gives you some kind of stat bonus in your left hand to make maximum use of each hand.

Re: Pure basic: has anyone ever heard of, or used it?

Ethin, that post wasn't what you would call constructive debate. The impression I received from the over all post was that he was giving points on his specific language, not converting you to the language of choice. He specifically spoke about smart pointers, then recommended python also.I'll quote Camlorn here."lot-virtual methods have turned out to be a bit of a godsend for parts of Libaudioverse, and so too has .  I'm not all over OO as "the" way, but you have to admit that classes make a nice abstraction over the construction/destruction/bunch of methods that take the same first parameters stuff."In what way did that sound like he was trying to make people use a specific language? The nature of Libaudioverse means that he literally has to focus on other languages. If the library is going to be used, he needs as much compatibility as humanly possible.Yes python 2.7 programs will run with 3.3, if you are close enough to python 3's changes.I'll give a basic example.print(" 5 divided by 2 is " + str(5/2)+".")Python 3 uses float division by default. Python 2 does not. Using this in a serious application could result in rather interesting problems.

In the future, container delivery, container protected seal and lock, which ensures the safety and anonymity of the goods. The price of shipping goods from China is largely determined by the choice Transport and features of the transported goods. The most affordable type of sea transport is considered. Marine transportation of goods from China (China), the cost of which will be cheaper than using other types of transport, carried out at regular Ocean Liner routes or tramp shipping on individual requirements.http://www.pro-lg.ru/It'll be quite hard to translate this message entirely to english. However, I think that whoever this person is, they have locked the entire forum in such a way that this topic specifically cannot be deleted. If I were a moderator, and I had access to the forum's internal code, I could take a look at it; whatever they've doen is not good.If anyone who's a moderator has any more deletion issues with this topic, I'd be happy to take a look at the PHP code and see what I can do. Be warned though that it may take me a very long time to see what's wrong. If that's not it, I'd be glad to check out the SQL database for suspicious SQL  code, but that would take me weeks to figure out because there is just too many posts and users on here.

guide to killing enemies in death match project alpha

2014-08-22 Thread AudioGames . net Forum — Articles Room : danny via Audiogames-reflector

guide to killing enemies in death match project alpha

Offen times, I get asked how does one go about killing enemies in death match project alpha, and this guide will attempt to explain it in detail. Note this is my first guide so improvements and suggestions can be sent to me via pm.First off, what is death match project alpha?Death match project alpha is a side scrolling shooter that takes place in the 2300's. Specificly, the year 2336, when mankind has long mastered space travel. When the phoenix red warp, a colony ship stationed neer the canary starsystem loses contact with the federation of human worlds, the federation sends out the rescue ship nova 4 to investigate. After an auto docking maneuver fails do to red warp's docking system being out of order, the ship crashes into the red warp dock and kills all but 2 crew members. Inside the derelict spacecraft however, something else seems to be a miss.Enough about the story. You can use different tactics on enemies to try and kill them. The tactic
I found to be most effective is watching the enemies movements, and firing if they are in range of your plasma rifle. If they seem like they are about to approach you, quickly dash to the other side of them and keep firing, as the normal enemies can't change speed very fast. Don't forget something that helps when your swarmed by a group is to keep on the move, as enemies jumping on you will result in a massive loss of health. The normal enemies incounterde in the game are extremely easy to kill this way.Exploders incounterde in sirten areas of the game are one shot targets, simpply aim and fire at them. Don't let them get on you though, as if they explode at your position they will take off twice as much health as they normaly do.Tenticles are stuck to various walls in areas of the game. In order to kill them, rappidly press enter until they release you.Tip, always keep hmed kits on you at all times. You might never know when the next enemy is g
oing to take a leap and land on you, or when a tenticle might grab you.

Re: Miriani and Star Conquest, differences

Just as long as you're able to hold up your end of the bargain(gun on a beacon), you shouldn't have any issues.  Also, to communicate you've got to go...keep it to that, "Guys, I've gotta go.  Sorry,".One thing that the SC hosts have stressed is sometimes OOC does happen and you do need to leave unexpectedly.  If it's something urgent then they can't or won't stop you, just as long as you don't address it in an OOC way.  If that must must must happen, that's what the oocsay command is foor, so you can state oocly that someone tried to steal your tv, or your mom decided to humiliate you with those family photos.  Lol.  But unfortunately, if you're known for having to go when in the middle of something, you will be that person and be less likely to be taken due to unreliability.  Unfortunate and stupid, but it does happen.

Re: error when starting up a brand new laptop

@enes, Windows 8/8.1 does not require a machine to support, or have enabled, secure boot. I have a Mac which does not even support it and it boots just fine. Here's some good suggestions:1. Press f2 or f12 (I think); f2 should open the BIOS itself, and f12 should open the boot manager. However, I'm not exactly sure about that. Note: Do this as soon as you press the power button! Hold it down until you see complete white cover your screen. Go into the boot category, and turn on EFI boot. If its not in that category, move around the bios with the left and right arrow keys until you find it. Left and right arrow keys move through categories, up and down arrow keys navigate options. Enter edits an on/off value, and f5/f6, or in one of my other computers case, f7/f8 changes values which have multiple values. Set EFI Boot to on. Press f10 and then select yes to save your settings, or go to the 'save and exit' category and select 'save and exit'.
Press the up and down arrow keys to find "yes", and press enter. Your computer should reboot automatically. You should be good to go then.2. Reinstall windows. It may be that your computer has "forgotten" windows, or "crashed" as some people call it. Note: Reinstalling windows is a very difficult process!3. Send it into the store for reparation.Note: Do not, under any circumstance, go into the BIOS unless you know absolutely what you are doing. Sited assistance is required. If you go into the BIOS, and do not understand what any of the options do, press control alt delete immediately to exit the BIOS and continue the boot process normally. Editing the BIOS settings without knowledge of what you are doing could have disastrous results, which includes failure to boot properly, your computer beeping at you, indicating in invalid option, blue screens randomly when your not expecting them or at a particular boot stage, failure to recognize
a required or necessary device, failure to recognize the RAM/hard drive, etc.If you do suggestion number one, make sure you have someone close by who actually knows what some of the options do.A good suggestion when in the bios is: When you don't know what an option does, don't mess with it.

Editing the BIOS settings without knowledge of what you are doing could have disastrous results, which includes failure to boot properly, your computer beeping at you, indicating in invalid option, blue screens randomly when your not expecting them or at a particular boot stage, failure to recognize
a required or necessary device, failure to recognize the RAM/hard drive, etc.If you do suggestion, make sure you have someone close by who actually knows what some of the options do.A good suggestion when in the bios is: When you don't know what an option does, don't mess with it.

I don't understand that last post brad. None of the things you said actually hep me to make the game better. Except for the thing about the step sounds, I can at least randomize them and add a couple other ones. And you don't use both weapons awhen yu attack; you only use 1, so only 1 stab sound plays. To the post about the story, twoscore is a word. THe construction "dead from poison" is also okay. Paragraph breaks are indicated by new line and tab characters. So no, I don't think many people will agree with you about what you said about the story for post 26.

@cx2,It's not the longterm conversations that bother me; I understand that as a gamer it is a good thing if one can be immersed in what one is playing, both of these games being a good example.  No, my problem is much more simple than that.  At any instant in time real life may present you with an undesirable and, for the sake of not leaving your fellow gamers in the dark you say something instinctively to communicate to them the reason for your departure or possible frustration.  Congratulations!  You've got an ooc warning.  Perhaps I'm taking this out of proportion, and thus far with only one ooc warning, being the newb that I am and having asked for better players' experiences regarding an issue as opposed to using the more favorable term pilots, I seem to be able to deal with it alright, but honestly, I just wish they would relax a bit... It's almost like they have nothing better to do than to go through and pick out part
icular messages and find some wording they don't like and give you a warning as a result of it.

There's one chest on the first floor I can't get to no matter how I try, and I've found an earth, thunder, wind and darkness door that I can't open because I have no key. Ice too, actually.I've beaten the mini-boss just past the save point, the big hulking thing that you can pelt from a distance. I've found a room with two or three boxes in it somewhere nearby, and I've found a room with a couple of teleporters that don't actually seem to go anywhere except about four spaces to the left.I'd really appreciate a hint as to where I should go next and/or what I should be looking for. I thought I was pretty good at navigation but I guess not. This place has me chasing my tail in a way that's
 quite frankly humbling.

Re: Pure basic: has anyone ever heard of, or used it?

@camlorn, I am tired of your little "smart pointers" and shit like that. Who cares! Who cares if a language has this and a language has that! No one! Stop trying to "convince" us to use either language. Oh, and about your statement in post 39? You are wrong here. I have actually ran programs for python 2.7 on 3.3.Look. I'm sorry for blowing up on you like this, but: will you please stop trying to convince us to use C++ because its got smart pointers? Who damn cares if its got that. Its not built in automatically. I've never heard of a compiler which automatically manages memory for pointers for C or C++. Have you? Probably not. If you want to prove to me that C++ is so cool, why don't you write an entire game, with everything that, oh, DM Project Alpha has, and see how hard that is. Its a hell of a lot harder in C/C++ than it is in PB. Get this through your head: We use the languages that we choose because it gets the damn job done. If you
keep trying to get us to stop using PB or some other language, I'm reporting you. This is gone on far enough, and I've had it with you. I haven't heard anyone else tell me, "You should use so and so because its got so and so."I understand that you like smart pointers, yes, but can you please try these languages that you say are bad for like 3 to 4 years, and get to know everyone who uses it, before you make accusations? It would really be nice. Then, once you get to know everything about the language, come back to us about it and tell us what you think.I understand your opinion, but just stop! Please?OK, I shouldn't have blown up like that, but your just really getting on my nerves.

Re: Miriani: Once Again

Further research and a slight encounter with a four person ship manned by one person who seems fairly intent on gunning me down has yielded further information I wish to share.  Upon finally having my apparent grace period come to an end, I realize that every single ship kind of sort of somewhat sends a message and has a bit of psychology tied to it at least now.  Industrial ships such as cargo haulers, freighters and roid haulers are ships that most destroyers, gunships and BC's will not shoot provided that you don't shoot them first, since doing so automatically provides you with protection of sorts as you can place a bounty on their ships for simply shooting at you in one of the three industrial spacecrafts.  There is a catch though, in order for this to work, a cargo hauler or freighter must have salvaged debris or made purchases for trading purposes within ten minutes before being attacked.  For roid haulers, it's actually even more simple;
provided that your roid hauler is in uncharted space or within the same sector as a roid hauling station, you're automatically covered.Obviously this isn't fullproof, and someone's bound to not care when it comes to the rules set by this bounty method, which is where things get interesting for you.  Assuming you've already been fired upon and you didn't fire back, you can print out a service record as you attempt to navigate away from the craft that fired on you.  Go to your nearest security office and submit your service record.  congratulations, you've just bountied a ship by a slight percentage of its worth and, should that ship continued to get bountied, it'll more than likely be destroyed by bounty hunters or at the very least, be fired on by long range lasers in sector 12 at some point.Seeing a bunch of battlecruisers near by while you're in your freighter mindlessly salvaging?  Let not
your heart beat troubled; if they want to play by the ropes, they can slipdrive to you, subwarp at you, but they can't fire upon you if they don't want to be bountied.  Just remember though, if you fire on them first, you cannot bounty them, since it is assumed that you, a less capable combat pilot decided to take on the risks for whatever reason came to your head. So, to quickly recap, stay in a roid hauler that is hauling roids or in a cargo hauler or freighter that is actively salvaging and trading and you'll be moderately safe from most combat pilots.  Keep service records on hand for the just-in-case exceptions; you just never know.  Another good idea is to get your hands on an Expediter as soon as you can, since this ship is probably the fastest and my favorite by far, allowing anyone to travel great distances in seconds.  A ship that seems like it might antagonize you would have to be able to predict where you're going to ftl to
next, but assuming you actually don't want to leave the sector, you can also subwarp next to a planet and land quickly.  Staying safe is merely a matter of flexibility and some creativity on the side, and having friends can help too, which is how I got out of a potential stun and strand situation today, not related to the previously mentioned ship chase above.  This is starting to get fun!

Re: Pure basic: has anyone ever heard of, or used it?

@sebbyAgain: I do not use C++ specifically for the object oriented programming.  Libaudioverse was going to be 100% C, and I wrote the necessary primitives.  The reason I switched was not classes, it was smart pointers which, when making graphs of interconnected nodes, are really useful.  If we were not in C++11, Libaudioverse would still be C.  Had that happened, I'd still have missed a lot-virtual methods have turned out to be a bit of a godsend for parts of Libaudioverse, and so too has .  I'm not all over OO as "the" way, but you have to admit that classes make a nice abstraction over the construction/destruction/bunch of methods that take the same first parameters stuff. As for speed between them, I noticed no difference.  This was also a reason I was sticking with C.  Once I'd completed the conversion (and it is a full conversion, not C++-as-C), it still ran just as fast as before.
This actually surprised me a great deal and was totally unexpected.  I have heard of cases of math library developers using C++ over C because, via tricks with templates, you can actually get faster code; whether or not this is true, most of the math libraries I can find (in my case, specifically glm) are C++.  But this may have to do more with operator overloading. As for top-down versus bottom-up: I think that top-down is what you want to aim for, but that bottom-up is what you get practically.  Even in OO.  But being able to do top-down, even a bit, leads to more flexible software with less corner cases.  I did purely bottom-up with camlorn_audio, and it really shows in a bad way.  The one isn't feasible, the other leads to bad code, but I think there's a happy medium in the middle. But my point wasn't that C++ is great.  C++11 brings it into bearable and fine if you know what you're doing but not so great if you do
n't territory.  My point was merely the contradictory reasoning: Purebasic is C plus libraries, Purebasic is paid, and yet Purebasic is somehow way better than either of these even in terms of the learning curve. And as for Python being the next java, I don't think so.  There's a core thing in Java that allows many, many mediocre or even bad programmers to make progress: it assumes you are a bad programmer and does everything it can to lock you in a jail cell and plug all the outlets.  Case and point: checked exceptions, lack of operator overloading, lack of multiple inheritance (somewhat alleviated in 8, far enough that the few cases I'd use it for can be done), lack of first class functions (also somewhat alleviated in 8), and epic amounts of boilerplate.  If Python becomes the next java, it's because people seem to be starting to realize that Java's philosophy makes a lot of good programmers run in horror, or perhaps it'
s just that the good programmers are finally running and dragging the market with them.@Frastlin:Python's syntax is so far from C as to be unrecognizable.  It's definitely not based on C.Every programming language provides some mechanism by which you can include code written by others and most include a standard library.  The answer to the question "can I include someone else's stuff" is always, always yes, but the convenience varies.  In the case of C/C++, you have headers and #include, which is almost the same as copy-pasting the contents of the header into your file.  This is a historical artifact from the days when compilers had to run on only a couple megabytes of ram and when modern techniques would cause us to wait additional hours, not additional milliseconds.I have also heard that Python is getting slower, but think this doesn't matter; our computers are getting faster way faster than python's ge
tting slower, even if it is.As for what you want, look at C first.  You *have* to know what it means to be C to call stuff from other languages, as there's almost no way to directly map C++ classes.  Libaudioverse does it by wrapping the C++ classes in a manually written C API, because that's actually possible once you know how.But in your case, I do not know what you would be doing that is going to run too slow.  If it is, consider the algorithm, not the language.  I'm only doing heavy C/C++ right now because of Libaudioverse, which performs something on the order of 100 million math operations per second.  I agree with sebby: you probably want to stick with Python for now.

Hi.What do I think about the game so far?Well now I think when ever I enter a room I must look for swarms of rats, thanks for that. It's awesome! the walking sounds are sounds from an IPhone game as far as I can tell, which doesn't mean there bad but maybe changing the footstep sounds per floor would add more of a difference to the floors. SO you don't feel like you're going around the same floor over and over. Sure the enemy's might get harder but that's what I thought entombed did and while I liked entombed I didn't like that about it. Although if we're aiming for realism then all the floors would be the same I guess...Also, if your character has to weapons maybe making it so the stab sound plays twice would be more realistic.I think it's a bit to hard at the moment. I can't get past the swarm of rats. Oh and my character died twice in one battle. That's just like me too. not giving up..
. until you get sliced in the head and even then, you don't give up, cause you're a fighter! you're strong! you're... dead... ah... okay then...I was waiting for it to say brad uses resurrection, cause he's awesome, alas this game does not know of my awesomeness therefor it did not say that.

Nocturnus, get a metafrequency communicator and tune it to 500. That's the out of character channel where such discussion is quite welcome. SC doesn't allow such a channel at all, for a long time Miriani didn't either to be honest, and I really do miss not having an out of character discussion channel.DD, Bari are something that happen to you not something you can do and I didn't want to complicate an already long list. Rift drives while I haven't used them are simply a way to move faster, the things you mentioned being able to find  using the rift drive may be worth mentioning but I simply know nothing about them since I haven't been on an expedition. In any case this isn't a list I planned to keep updated or anything, I just wanted to put out there a purely factual comparison for people who had been curious about either game to help them make the right decision as to which if either is right for them.

Is there a potion or healing items in this game in case my organ get mangled? I can't seem to find one. What I personally like in this game except dungeon is the target system. You can aim at specific part of your enimy, which is really similar to Entombed.Great work man, great work. Cheer it up!

Re: Pure basic: has anyone ever heard of, or used it?

I think you'd better stick to Python.Of course you can use a random-number generator implemented in C; in fact, if you use your OS support, you are using one written in C, most likely (not the C library, but an in-kernel implementation). And to answer your question: I'd rather be the mad scientist. It is my considered ( but not very hard ) opinion that you should learn C, if for no other reason than that it will help you appreciate all the other languages, including C++ and Python. The reason to look at C++ is that, much like C, there is a tendency--some would argue, to the demerit of object-oriented programming--to have a 1:1 correspondence between the primitives of the language and useful features. Yes, this does cost runtime performance, but it'
;s nothing like as bad as either Python or Java (Python is actually getting slower over time). Yet, like C, C++ is quite dangerous, and as Linus Torvalds intimates, it's quite easy to hurt yourself with it. You can see why it's used in embedded systems development.APIs should all have C interfaces, because it's the lowest common denominator. Therefore learn C, and everything that follows can be expressed as a binding to C, and you will be in a position to understand the lowest level implementation of a library. It's not all that hard, really it isn't.Or don't bother. Enjoy the comforts of standing on the shoulders of giants. Hey, who's to impress, really? I confidently predict that Python will be the next Java. Those smug Python programmers will never live it down.

Re: The Ensign: A prequel to A Dark Room

Okay, just to anyone who is playing this game I tried another game tonight and made a miner mistake. When the admiral offers you food at the beginning this is a choice between easy and hard mode. Easy mode is the  standard game. Hard mode is similar in some ways to hard mode in  A dark room. You move 4     squares per food,  though water is stil at one step per unit,  and I believe your punches also level p faster (or at least I've not yet seen them level in the standardgame but I did in hard mode). The major difference however is in hard  modeonce you use an outpost, it's gone forever! So no instantly replenishing stores of food.  thus the chance to  cook flesh from monsters is definitely needed. I haven't fixed everything else, for example I don't know the level up times on punches but this seems to be the difference. I'll try a standard game later and see how it works.

Re: Pure basic: has anyone ever heard of, or used it?

But in C, can you import other people's code into your code or do you need to make everything all on your own?For example, the random module. I don't care how to generate a random number. I just want to have a random number when I need one. so in python I just sayimport randomprint random.randint(1,5)that will give me a number between 1 and 5.The C vs C++ argument is a very fierce one and here is what my favorite take is on it:C is the mad scientist cackling maniacally while his big, world-smashing robot C++ destroys the world. So would you rather be the scientist or the robot?I've never used either, this is just what people have told me. I am planning on using C or C++ as a supplemental language to python. Nothing beats python when it comes to popping out random junk, but:1. that junk is not always very fast2. you can have really bad tendencies in python if you don't know what you are doin
g.As someone who just uses python and a little _javascript_, I can say that the only reason I don't use global variables, exec or eval functions along with while loops all over, is because people have said "This is bad coding practice" It isn't really any different speed wise when you are just starting out.But there is a reason why python is so syntactically pretty and I think part of it is that is completely based off C.Learn code the hard way does have a "learn C the hard way" but they don't have "learn C++ the hard way"Here are the reasons why he says to learn C:You can't be sloppy and half-assed about what you write or nothing will work. it's a simple language you can figure out on your ownC's not hiding things from you that those other languages try and fail to obfuscate. It is the Devil, Satan, the trickster Loki come to destroy your productivity with his seductive t
alk of pointers and direct access to the machine. The C programming language's only failing is giving you access to what is really there, and telling you the cold hard raw truth. So, why do you not get the above in C++? How syntactically similar are the two? Is it like python and _javascript_?Or are they basically the same, but with a couple differences like American and British?speed wise, is there a difference?I've got my productivity language, what would be the language to help me:understand APIs from big programs like Sonar, Spotify or even google, give me better programming practices and most of all, give me a language to write a specific DLL or module that I can use in my project that will be super fast when ran?Does this sound more like C or C++?

I have a couple questions.Firstly, one thing I wasn't a huge fan of in entombed was all the classes getting all their skills right off the bat.  I personally enjoy gaining new ones through leveling, questing, etc.  Will this be the rout you're going?Second, and I realise this is all subject to change and several things are just placeholders at this point, but while I love the battle track as it creates suspense and drama, it doesn't really fit when you're fighting a rat for example. Great job again though, and hoping I can find your donation thread to maybe give you a monthly one if you're serious about keeping this quality of game up now and in future.

Hmm. It might well be worthwhile questioning how you would react if it were your copyrighted work being used.Ultimately it probably comes down to intent: if you aren't making money and are doing the world a favour, nobody can reasonably take issue. But, if the opportunity existed for a market to form around the audience of those who benefited from your copyright infringement, then the publisher would have a legitimate case, and you couldn't reasonably defend it, without resorting to the court of public opinion and PR tactics. That publishers haven't thus far given a damn probably means you're on pretty safe ground, at least for now.

THe mechanics are nothing like battle zone. To those who played the mage job, it currently has no skills that you can raise. Only the fighter has those. Of course, it will have those when I add them in.About the pain sounds, there are 2 different kinds of pain sounds. If you took less than 1 damage, you will hear a rather breathy noise as if the guy is yawning because it didn't really damage him. If however, damage was above 1, he will scream in pain.

So I was thinking how you could do events without using the threading module. You would need to use the time.clock() function a lot as benchmarks.I replicated the threading.Timer functionality. It is used a little differently because I kind of bastardized the timer and threading classes, but the while loop is all controlled by you. You can press buttons and have another function take care of them. Does anyone have a better way to do this?class Thread(object):    def __init__(self, name=None, function=None, args=()):#name is not used here. function is the name of the function you wish to run with the run() function and args are the args for that function.        self.name = name        self.function = function        self.args = args        self.current_time = time.clock()#current_time is a set point in time, time.clock() doesn&
#039;t update like normal.    def run(self):        self.function(*self.args)    def wait(self, length):#I'm basically saying below that if the moving clock time minus the snapshot of the clock we got above is greater than the length argument, then do the run function        if time.clock() - self.current_time >= length:            self.current_time = time.clock()            self.run()            return True        else:            return False#the function that will run with the run functiondef hello(w):    print "hello %s" % w#for the while statementplay = True#creating our object, we are saying hello is our function name and our arguments are &qu
ot;fred"t = Thread(function=hello, args=["Fred"])while play:#this will run the wait function every loop and return False unless the clock minus the static time are greater than the wait number    if t.wait(2):        play = False#Sleeping 5 milliseconds every loop makes our program take up something like 90% less CPU    time.sleep(0.05)This could be used to randomly wait for a time between enemy attacks.

That said, Cecil and Shawna are probably your best bets for this, depending on who you'e built up better. Cecil has more HP and two-thirds of Shawna's defense. Shawna has fewer HP to play with but takes less damage. Kelly hits just as hard (or perhaps just a bit harder) than either of them, but her defense is awful so you won't have room for error. Ross and Gabriel probably won't do enough damage to warrant using them, and if you pick Simon, you and your foe will be plinking each other to death. Myself, I prefer Cecil. On the bit about random scrolls though, I agree. It's kind of similar to the "push the button when you hear the beep" sort of games that a lot of people disparage, which is sad in its way because Paladin could be more than that.

Hello folks. Sorry if I'm repeating someone else's report, but here it goes:I could not raise the mage spells when I click on learn skills. The pain sound when the male character is being hurt sometimes reminds me more a relief breathing than a pain sound.I accidentally grabed an orc fighter's corpse but for some reason I could not drop it.I also experienced the fact that it is easier to land a blow when disarmed than wielding something. Can you add in a warning message to tell if the team is fully rested? I sometimes rest more than needed. Can you add in a guard option in the fight menu in order to spend a turn recovering mana or ap?Well sorry if my post sounds like a storm of issues, but for real, the game has a great potential and I don't want to leave anyone discouraged by this.Best regards, Haramir.

Try to learn the scroll in as few turns as possible so you can cast it. Rince and repeat. This time you get to choose which character you want to do it with.

Re: Miriani: Once Again

hi,since this week i also started playing miriani again. with the name michael salvatore and i discovered that most pilots are quite nice. i got 15 links with other pilots already. and my fear of asteroid hauling lisences given by other pilots, what was the case three years ago and what drove me off the game, wasn't needed. because i have hauled around 15 to 20 roids and i haven't encountered another pilot asking me who i am and nor they docked at my ship.i also joined various combat missions these past three days and got around 112 combat points and 165 lisence points already. i started playing last tuesday.thanks for doing this research nocturnus, you'll definately get a thumbs up, i am enjoying miriani more than ever.greetz mike

Re: an internet speed question

It's hard to deny speed, but there are good cable companies and bad cable companies, and if it's a bad one, you'll be glad you're on DSL. Can you get VDSL? That might be a worthwhile upgrade path, if you can get it.Generally cable is less flexible, both because of congestion at the CMTS and also because you're connected through a satellite bridge, and thus are limited in addressing and speed options. Cable internet seems to be much like cable TV; you're the customer, and are expected to sip respectfully from the fountains of knowledge. Whereas, DSL/VDSL has you using proper link-level connectivity, at the cost of downstream speed, but gaining proper routed addresses and a more balanced upstream/downstream ratio. What's more important, speed or reliability?
