I'm going to be the weird one here and say that Spotify, and the other music streaming services, kind of suck.You never actually own the music. If you are somewhere without internet, well, tough luck. If the service decides to remove an artist's work, tough luck, too.But, most importantly, the creators don't get much from it. The pay rates are ridiculously tiny, unless you are lucky enough to be one of the especially famous ones.It's convenient, without a doubt. But I still much prefer to actually buy the albums, generally from Bandcamp; I can't do it all at once, but I will have a nice collection eventually. Because I enjoy the music I listen to, and want to make sure the creators are able to make more of it.

Thanks @4 and @5 for your input!Yep Dark, atmospheric guidance would've been cool, but like you say, can't have 'em all. Besides, the atmospheric guidance seems to be a trend in later games. I'm noticing it doesn't show up much in earlier games, probably because it would've made the game bigger/more difficult to finish, with the amount of self-voicing in use at the time.From reading and messing around, I'm gathering that if I try too hard to map the tables out in my head and keep track of everything, I'll just get confused and wonder why things aren't playing out right. Instead I just, should try things and get a feel for what works and what doesn't, and have fun dealing with randomness. I admit this is new to me; the way I traditionally feel out games is trying to work every mechanic out so I always know what's going on. So this will take some getting used to, but it does seem like it would be fun once I adjust to it. While I don't like luck-based games, I can see that there would be strategies to the different tables once you learn them, which appeals to me.Multiple people have told me that packman isn't the best table for messing with, so I'll try the demo of Extreme as Dark suggested. For the record, I did clear a table on Packman just now, but only just. Probably not anything to be excited about, in the end I didn't really know what was going on half the time and just aimed for power-ups and ghosts.Anyway, my last stupid question which comes from my never having experienced a pinball machine. When the ball is just randomly moving, the shift keys have no purpose. The only time they do is if the table instructions say "press shift to do this action," or during a scan. Is that right?

Admittedly, a good portion of the voice acting in this game is provided by Aaron himself...and it's cringe. There's also one female voice actress who overplays the living snot out of...what's her name? Mrgana? The person with the cauldron, I've only watched one playthrough of the game, but her shrill pain scream is like drill-bits in my ears. It's one of the reasons I'm not interested in shelling out for the game, honestly, apart from the aforementioned cheesy ways to die and bad level setup where you can be put in a position where you need arrows/poison cure items and don't have them. On the easy difficulty. Add to that the whole Grey Lady being a first boss, and being as mean as she is? Nah, not a lot of balance work went into this game, so I choose not to buy it. Others have obviously felt differently, though, and that's fine.I paid something like twenty bucks for Super Liam, and this game has a bit more going on as far as difficulty and complexity. That said, while SuperLiam is pretty easy (read: very easy) by comparison, it also made me laugh a couple of times, had good sound design, no bugs, no weird item detection issues. If this game's asking price had been twenty bucks right from day 1, then for me at least, that's a bit more reasonable, if only because the audio gaming community has had over ten years between SL and the Gate to make side-scrollers better.Also? BK3. It's crazy, and in some places murderously difficult, but it's...free. I think BK3 kind of spoiled me for other side-scrollers, personally. If I'm only lukewarm on a side-scroller, I'm extremely unlikely to buy or recommend it.

Or truly discontinued stuff like the Maestro. I have the TRekker Solo software but that would obviously be useless on an emulator. When we're talking stuff that's clearly available, if there's irrefutable proof that it's been preserved, the best thing to do is to throw it in their face so they could make this easy on everyone and give the necessary permission for it to be preserved. Important pieces of A T history. Windows XP will probably go this same route, honestly they let it leak, so they would be wise to just let it be rather than wasting useless legal resources on a 20 year old operating system.

I would absolutely recommend the pinball games, some of the most audio rich and generally fascinating arcade style games ever made, also imho far less difficult on space to work out than your average fps. They're games I go back to every so often for a bit of fun and I always find them worth it, indeed my one regret is that there was never a pinball party pack volume 2, much less the promised table creator.The Packman table is actually a pretty bad representation of gameplay imho, since it has to fit in the rules of the packman arcade game as well, including the sounds and so on, where as esp pinball xtreme's two demo tables, home run and pinball extreme show you much more what gameplay is like. In terms of how gameplay works, yes, you pretty much read the instructions, launch your ball, listen to it rattle around then, when it hits the paddle decide where to shoot it, however pinball is a relatively casual game, and one with a fair degree of randomness. You will find as you play that different strategies will work better to get certain objectives, EG sometimes you have to hit the ball immediately the scan shows an object, sometimes a bit before, sometimes after, sometimes try bouncing the ball off something else, but that's all the fun of pinball, and in the mean time you can just have fun bouncing the ball around seeing what you hit. Heck, other than knowing how to activate the minigames, I don't think I checked the instructions too much myself after initially buying the game.My only miner issue, is I do wish they'd relied less on you needing to read instructions and provided them in the game itself in a more atmospheric way, as indeed is the more modern process. But hay, you can't have everything, and even today, these games stand up very well.

Setting up Slay The Spire accessibility.

Hi all.I'm looking into Slay The Spire. I was originally considering "Text the Spire", I think it is, but then saw "Say the Spire" that uses a game controller. That one seems simpler, but I've got a couple potential issues.First, I have some sort of Logitech controller. I don't have things like top panel square or whatever, I have a bunch of numbered buttons. So while I assume it will work, I'm not sure, and I'm not sure how the buttons would map, or if there's an easy way to find out what that mapping is, even if they do. Second, it seems like Say has far fewer features than Text. I understand that Say is a beta so I'm not trying to throw stones or anything. It sounds pretty cool and like I said, it sounds simpler to use.So I guess I have some questions.1. I see both Say and Text use the same two modules, base and I forget the other one. Can I just install both modules, or rather, Say and Text and the extra modules it needs? I see in Say's readme, it tells you to make sure to install the right version of base, so I guess what I'm asking is if they use the same versions of these modules.2. Assuming I can, is there a fairly simple way to switch between them? I know you can enable and disable modules, but just switching between a set would be nice, so loading either Say or Text and the extra modules it uses all at once.3. As I understand setup, I install the Java Runtime, gods I loathe the JRE, does the version matter? Or do I just go get the latest? Then I install Steam and buy the game.4. Then I see things about "Steam workshop". Say uses it, does Text as well? Do you just find that on the main Steam page/app? I'm honestly not quite sure how Steam works, I think I messed with it once ages ago but I might be wrong. Basically though, I'm wondering if they're both in there, because it seems like it would make for a much easier setup.5. Assuming I use Text, aside from the module made by a member whose names escape me, that reads windows automatically, I saw mention of a map module somewhere?6. I don't suppose Text also has controller support?7. I guess I may as well ask this too, which one would you recommend, and why? I feel like Text seems to be pretty full-featured, but I feel like people are really digging Say.

Honestly? Just keep playing and trying different things. You'll find that tables can have their own little gimmicks, but I feel like that's just something you figure out over time. There's definitely a big element of randomness to it though, that's half the excitement (or frustration) of pinball. Different strategies work for different people. You can read about table layouts all day and night, but if you don't really ever play the game I'd wager it probably won't do you much good. Some 15 years on and both games are definitely up there with my most favourite audio games. I'm just sad we never got the planned table creator though.

@Nidza07: Royalties are royalties. #moreThanJustAVoicePlus, the voice acting and sounds actually aren't half bad. True, there are far too many cheap ways to die - the rocks are a pain in the ass if you are on a virtual machine, but overall it's a decent game at $30, and it's a no-brainer at $15.And you do realize that just a one hour recording/voiceover session gets you up into the hundreds of dollars, right? I'm quite sure VGStorm did not go for someone charging industry-standard rates, but give these a look. Then maybe you won't be so quick to judge when a game with quality voice acting has a higher price tag - should it have been more advanced? Sure! But it is what it is as far as Aaron is concerned.

Here in USA, we have a meltimg pot of peoples and nationalities, so when you call it the China virus, people who hear it, the next time they see an asian will wonder if they just happen to be from China and become defensive, and trust me there are a lot of asians around here.On a related note, china definitely got problems, but so does everywhere else. We shouldn't be trying to pick the speck out of others eyes without taking care of the plank in our own first. Finally, as an American, I think its ok to be pro America, even in light of the stupid stuff she's done, because America is my home, just as my parents are my parents, and as surely as bad things have come from both, there has been some good as well.

@270Yes, I wrote this blog post explaining what I did, why, and how I did it.  Some of that's probably out of date in terms of compiler internals.Short version: I asked a question on IRC, it spun out of control and became a 6 month project back when I had time to randomly take on 6 month relatively full time projects, and now Rust  auto-reorders fields to eliminate "holes", which makes your types smaller without you having to hand-sort fields by alignment and size.  In the process I also cleaned up a huge chunk of the compiler, which unblocked future work such as repr(transparent) that's not mentioned there that other people have run with since.Rust types weren't actually very C compatible in the first place--for example Option only has a discriminant sometimes--so it wasn't a major loss, especially since even before that change you were supposed to be using repr(c), and as the blog post mentioned actually doing it only had a fallout across like 5 or 10 libraries for all of crates.io.Will let you or anyone else read the post for more than that, no sense rewriting the entire thing for here.

finally trying to get into ESP Pinball. Any tips?

Hi all,I confess the ESP Pinball games are ones which I've wanted to get into and play, but I don't know if I can.I first tried Pinball classic demo as a kid and had absolutely no idea what I was doing. Then I heard Raul Gallegos playing Old Man Stanley's House (I wish that file was still up somewhere as it was funny!). Then I heard a friend play Safari and really enjoy it, and a while after that I heard PG13 messing around with Soccer star and Haunted House. I couldn't tell how good any of these people were at the games but they seemed to know more than I did.Over the past few years my spatial skills have improved. I'm now fairly good at Technoshock, Shades of Doom and Monkey Business. The latter is especially interesting to me because of the environmental landscapes, (I'm a real sucker for those btw and I could tell the Pinball games would be really cool for me because of that). I mean, I'm not the best at these games I'm sure, but I at least feel a sense of orientation now I didn't feel before. I still get my mind in knots trying to play Dynaman or packman Talks, but even those are at least a little easier for me to start out with than they were before, even if I still can't get past the first level in either game. Still, I wonder if I could perhaps tackle ESP Pinball now and get it.So far my results are mixed; I feel like I understand a good deal of what the manual says, but as this game type isn't really my forte, I know I'm going to have trouble. I started off with the Packman table, as it looks to be the easiest, and is 1 out of the 2 tables in the demo.Before I actually get into this, I was wondering a few things. Maybe these are silly questions, but I don't know anything about Pinball.I understand the concept of the scanning when your ball gets stuck to the flippers. I have a vague understanding of how the other objects work such as the bumpers, pop-up walls and spinners. I haven't encountered them fully, but while briefly messing with the Packman table, I got a sense that I would perhaps figure them out.What I'm trying to figure out is how much control does the player actually have over what happens in the game? Right now my feeling is that you only really have control when you're scanning and decide where to shoot the ball. So to get good at the game you have to know the layout of the table, follow the ball well when it's moving, and wisely make shots when you get the chance, hoping that the ball doesn't go in a bad corner in between shots. It's sort of a back-and-forth between active gameplay and passive listening but you still have to concentrate the whole time. Is this a fair assessment, or am I totally wrong here?Any other insight would also be welcome!

Asio4all is a solution, yes, but FL Studio's Asio driver is a hell of a lot better and does not hog up your soundcard like Asio4all does. And I cannot speak for uninstalling fl studio getting rid of asio or not, but it's probably best to keep it installed, it doesn't take up that much space.

I haven't been on in a while but it was about dead the last I've looked. The thing is, with no guildmasters and other people to play with, it's not really that funt. this is unplayable to me it seems. There is a part when unlimited enemies appear and i don't know what to do. I think it is the third screen of the tutorial, just before it tells you to collect the power crystals and whatever. I somehow did it, but then i died, and i don't know what the hell to do to kil these unlimited robots. Or are there bombs which you need to avoid? They do this kind of swoosh sound and then you need to slash them or whatnot. Sometimes when you get hit you hear this sizzling sound. I'm confused.

Aaron: Thanks for your suggestion. I agree that'd it'd likely make the game easier in many ways. However I think it could also be overwhelming and not easy to interpret in another. For example, when you invade another city, most of the time you need to break through city walls to be able to get in. Knowing whether you or anyone else has already made a hole in the wall (which normally circles around the city in a large and irregular pattern) may be hard to discern I'd think. The other thing is that adding an additional mode to the game to describe all the map surroundings in text would take more work than I can commit to at this point. While the game is open source, I'm the only one working on it at this point so I can only do so much right now!zkline: That's great. Let me start with those changes. It will take me a while, but hopefully I can get much of it done and add it to the next release which will probably be anywhere between two to four months out. Certainly it may take longer and may have to come in a release even after, but I'll at least start the process.Any other feedback in the interim is welcomed too by you or others!(maybe someone can submit a request to the NVDA developers too--at least if they're aware of the issue they may get to it at some point)

Hi.I've been using Spotify for 3 months or so, and for me it's really greate. I love the fact that it allows you to make long, and I mean... Very very long, playlists like a radio. So if any song gets your attention, pull it in to any playlist of yours. Then if you wish download the damned thingy, and just trip or relax while music is being played and your favorite artists are being paid by your playbacks. Sure, artists could be better paid, but that's another time discussion. I'm an artist and composer myself and I can say that... Spotify is not enough. It does  not give me enough to buy food, but their service and support team are excellent and you can even suggest lots of stuff from their forum.

@chrisnorman7Version with pitch bend is up, buffer_generator.pitch_bend = 2 for example.  It's not well tested so either you'll enjoy in a "wow this works great" way or a "wow that sucks and broke" way but either way enjoy.  It's not available on other generators yet, that's a more substantive change that I'm not sure how I want to handle being as I need to keep some options open moving forward.@268Yeah, I mean I figured that had to be there somewhere.  For what it's worth--though you weren't the one asking originally--the difference with Synthizer is that buffers are immutable: you can't just change the buffer to change all generators using it, because if you want to load different data you need a different buffer.

aaron,Just as a point of clarification, all the words a numbers are ASCII.  I take your point about the maps and such being a little confusing, but I'm also sad that more blind people aren't aware of the potential in these kinds of games. THere's nothing else like them, and I think that a lot of the issue is the way the screen reader handles navigation, not the games themselves.Darin,Your ideas sound like a good way to begin. I just wish I were able to fix NVDA to behave more sensibly as regards ASCII maps, since I definitely know they're a thing in many other games aside from yours. I don't know enough about its internals to do that, however. I hate to feel like we're using cludges when they shouldn't be necessary.

BASS has buffering support built-in, they're called samples over in BASS' infrastructure. They get loaded and decoded in-memory and you can create up to X independent channels of those, where X can be specified freely by the application using BASS. Changing data on the sample will then again influence all channels, which allows for quite flexible data management.

When I run dxdiag it shows me the display and sound devices which I can access from device drivers but they along with dxwebsetup.exe tell me I have equivalent or better so that I can't update them. It also let's me know I have directx 12 but dx doesn't show up in the program manager list. And, if I try to remove the drivers I'm warned that the devices will stop functioning and I'm scared to mess up my pc.Is there a specific file that I need to reinstall from directx for 1.05b to work?

But minimizing facts about the systematic massacre at the least what we can call it, is not right either.Now no one denied the other massacres and genocides that happened, Omar, but only you and Burak denied the Armenian one, the Algeria massacre did happen and that was bad, of course, the other one I do not know about but I have no reason to doubt you. Apparently I misremember when Snowmonno gets a stronger ghost move, something other than tricky fucking gaze, a special move. I thought it was level 40, but that came and went without notice, as id 41, 42, and even 43. I did get the option of learning stun volt though so I guess there's that, hu hurr. I apparently also forgot that Arctana and Submenno take a long ass time to get decent moves. Arctana was rocking ice pelt and bubble burst like a boss, but we've finally got flood at level 43. I could have frigid touch instead of ice pelt I guess but its strength is less than half its special attack. Seems like it wouldn't be much of an upgrade. Hi,I also use NVDA. I would honestly prefer a mode with no ascii at all. When I think of a text-based game, I think of text as words and numbers. Ascii just confuses me as a screen reader user. On iOS, the accessibility of A Dark Room got past this quite interestingly. It'd say something like, "outpost, 2 south, 1 west", if you then went south once it'd say "outpost 2 south, 1 west". Another way is to use coordinates, both for the player and objects around them.

Do you have to? Well, it depends on what you want to do. But basically, no, if you're doing something and it works, you're fine. But you'll probably have a lot better results, if you want to do anything serious, with an actual audio interface. You can get them for around a hundred bucks or so. I realize that can still be a chunk of money, but it could be a lot worse.
