Re: are there any other playable roguelikes or rpgs besides entombed?

Hey there Aaron,I would strongly recommend dungeon crawl stone soup. it's a little tricky to learn, but rewarding once you get over the learning curve.I play it with NVDA, and while you need a little pacience, the game is quite beatable. It has around 50 dungeon levels, all sorts of themed areas, around 20 different gods you can follow as well as roughly two dozen races and classes. But in other ways it  is a little simplified in comparison to entombed. There are no weapon or armour materials, and combat is a straight forward hit point system, meaning a a lot of repeated text. Here's the link to the download page, make sure to get the ascii version.https://crawl.develz.org/download.htm

I know it's a longshot, but does anyone know of a version of the game of Go that might be blind accessible? Developping an online version for the RS games platform for instance would not be difficult, but developping an AI would be near impossible.

You will be prevented from travelling if you encounter any sort of threatening situation, including monsters. I'm sorry that you're still having trouble with the invintory firefly, could you describe what exactly is going on? As it isn't a new release per say, and I wasn't sure if some blind gamers already knew about it, I figured I should make a thread in the general section, but feel free to make one in the new releases room if the mods are fine with it.

Hmm it's very strange that you can't read the race and class selection menues. Are you using NVDA? There is a strange bug where things don't appear in your invintory right after you pick them up, but if you move around a little and do a thing or two they should show up.

Re: Dungeon Crawl, Stone Soup!

Ah sorry firefly I should have mentioned that command, it's control plus g for the go to command which will help you get to different levels. Then press d for dungeon, the number 2 to go to the second level and enter. I've never had to memmorize dungeon levels for dungeon crawl, which is why I enjoy it so much. The auto find function used with control + f,, the auto explore function by pressing o, and the auto travel function I already mentioned are so easy to use you can get to just about any landmark you wish without having to know how to get there. When you encounter an easy monster like a rat, you can simply press the tab key a number of times to automaticly move towards it and smack it with your weapon. If you encounter a tougher monster though, you will need to gain an understanding of the layout of your immediate area, and decide how you want to deal with it. If you encounter a group of monsters, it's best to find a narrow corridor so you can fight them
one at a time, but the game designers have tried to set up the dungeon so that it's very hard to find one at times. In the manual there should be a complete key command list, seperated into different categories.

Re: Dungeon Crawl, Stone Soup!

Hey Dark, I'm sorry I'm not very good at explaining everything in detail with text. I'm more of a conversational communicator, but the main command you can use to look around is by pressing the x key which puts you into a examine mode and centres you on your character. You can then use the arrow keys to look around. I turn off all punctuation when I play, so that I don't have to listen to it go number number hash hash dot dot. If you want to get centred on your character again, press the space bar to get out of the examine mode and press x again to reenter it centred on your character. But I know you prefer to use Hal, and I don't know how well that would work with this game.

Dungeon Crawl, Stone Soup!

Greetings fellow adventurers! I've noticed that no one around here seems to be into Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup, so I thought I'd try introducing it. In short, it's one of those roguelike games, made in an old school style, but it continues to be actively developped by what seems to be a dedicated team and is one of the most popular titles among sited roguelike enthusiasts. I will warn you that it is not specificly designed with the blind in mind, so it can be very frustrating at times, but I have, with lots of trial and error, managed to beat the game on a few occasions, but have still only scratched the surface of what this game has to offer. It has roughly 20 races and classes, a completely different randomized dungeon every time, around a dozen different dungeon branches with different themes and special monsters, 15 different Gods with their own rewards and punishments for their followers, and more besides. But the game is tough and unforgiving. In most cases, if you die once, that's it for you and you'll have to start all over again. I'm not sure about other screenreaders, but it works well with NVDA, but not with jaws. I'm afraid I can't vouch for voice over users. The game doesn't have any sound packs, though I've heard it's possible to design one, and you have to be pacient with lots of text and maps and such, but it has very seffisticated auto explore and find functions, so unlike other roguelikes you will never get lost. The learning curve is more than a little steep, so if anyone is interested we could hang out on skype and I can help you get started. If you have plenty of time to burn, and are itching to try a tough strategy RPG that will chew you up and spit you out again, then join me in the dungeon! Here's a dropbox link to the latest version, unzip the folder and enjoy!Greetings fellow adventurers! Re: Dungeon Crawl, Stone Soup!

The first thing you should know is nvda can't seem to read it when you first open the game. If you press incert t to check the title, all you'll see if the path, C:\ whatever. So you need to alt tab out of the window and back in again until NVDA reads the title, which should be something like dungeon crawl stone soup 0.17.1. Getting your first character started should be fairly intuitive from there, but once you get the game started press x to go into an observation mode. Use the arrow keys to look around, but keep in mind that your stats are in a collumn on the right side of the screen. You will appear as an [ a-t ] att sign, and most early monsters will appear as a g, r, l or s. If you missed some of the latest messages in the game, press control shift P, and it'll give you a log of all the most recent goings on.

Re: Nethack 3.6 Released

I'm wondering if anyone else has ever played Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup? It's a lot like Nethack, but with a lot of navigation features that make it very easy to play with a screenreader, so long as you have some pacience. I'm able to play it with NVDA on windows seven, but jaws didn't work, so I'm not sure about other screenreaders. You can explore dungeon levels automatically, and it will pick up expendable items of interest such as potions and scrolls without requiring you to find them by hand, you can press control f and type in what ever you'd like to find, and can even use general search terms like weapon to get a list of all the weapons your character has found so far. It's so simple that you really only need to use the curser to look around when you are in battle, and that is easy enough because it centres on your character when you press x to examine your surroundings. Like most roguelikes, it's stupidly difficult, and embarrassing wa
ys to die abound, but I managed to beat the game once, through a lot of luck and a specific plan to make an overpowered character.

Discworld mud claims to have over a million rooms, and some map help for the visually impaired as well. Ive tried it a few times but have not had the time to make the investment a mud requires, it does look like it is truly massive though. If some others in the blind community were also interested in trying it out I would probably pick it up again.

Hey all,I was thinking of getting into sound rts again, as I havent played it in years. But the latest stable version doesnt seem to be working for me. It loads up but doesnt say anything, or respond to me in any way I can observe. It might just be something to do with the TTS not working properly, or it may be the game itself that isnt working, Im not sure. But I dont get an error message or anything. Do any of you know what might be going on?ThanksNiall
