Battery life on an MBP with Bootcamp
Battery life on an MBP with Bootcamp Hi all,I'm sure I've thoroughly annoyed you all with my questions concerning Macs, but I'm wondering if anybody has experience running Windows 10 on bootcamp. In terms of battery life, how much juice do you get? I usually get 3-4 hours depending on what I'm doing. I have an MBPR late-2015. I'm just curious if this is normal for this machine to only get this much battery, or if I should be getting more. I read somewhere that someone was getting 8-9 hours doing graphic design with the screen brightness at 40%. I have mine set down to 0%, battery saver on, and running only small apps.Any feedback would be cool.Luke URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=300863#p300863 ___ Audiogames-reflector mailing list Audiogames-reflector@sabahattin-gucukoglu.com https://sabahattin-gucukoglu.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/audiogames-reflector

Re: Computer Science Majors: Current and Past
Re: Computer Science Majors: Current and Past After looking into what the university I will be attending requires, it is clearly evident programming isn't the only thing involved. "Science" outlines a general system of how computers work through purely a software standpoint. I was curious about the engineering side of things, but it's more hardware driven than software. Laptop suggestions
Laptop suggestions Hi guys:My MBP mid-2015 running Bootcamp just isn't efficient enough for a full day's worth of battery life. I get 4-5 hours max. I am currently in college with days that can rack up 6-8 hours use of battery. What laptops would you suggest I use in order to get enough RAM, CPU, and battery life that would suffice for a student running JAWS, OpenBook, Microsoft Office, and other relatively non-intensive CPU programs?I currently use my MBP and an HP ProBook, but the battery life on most of the HP's I've dealt with before aren't great. I'm looking for anything but HP and Toshiba.I'm open to those options if there are indeed models that are up to snuff with my expectations (sturdy hardware, good performance, extended battery life). I've heard great things about Lenovo and Asus. Anything built by Alienware or of the like would be way too much (I'm not looking to game). I will be taking up computer science in the fall of this year, with money in the budget range of $700-$1,000 to work with. I need a machine running Windows that can last a full day on one charge and offer great performance.I'm not so sure about Microsoft's Surface Book which, as far as I've heard, is the Windows equivalent of the MBP. Has anyone ever purchased one? They are horribly expensive, so I will assume not many on this forum have used one (I think it came out?).I'm awaiting the several thousand responses. Re: Was I really THAT guy?
Re: Was I really THAT guy? It's something not everybody (in fact the vast majority) doesn't consciously think about. Think before you speak is what our parents often tell us, but rarely do most people ever follow suit with that old but wise piece of advice. What's interesting to me is that interaction on the net, at least to me, has greater room for catching yourself than in face-to-face verbal communication. On average, I bet users glance over their posts before submitting, at least to the extent that they're not just writing character for character and passively writing nonsense, followed by the submission. I've done this multiple times, but I'm also not average. You'd think that with such a difference in the conduct and the way we communicate on the web, we'd have the propensity to check over what we write before posting to the public domain. This doesn't happen to the degree at which people make sure they're properly communicating their ideas in spite of the fact that this is only a text-based environment. Alas, this doesn't happen, and as Arqmeister pointed out, especially in our situation, we have no choice but to have a mediary bending the message in a seemingly minuscule way, but it can make the largest impact as he also referenced.I find myself thinking I'm too good to ever edit my writing before posting out on the web, but no one is perfect and can be expected to proofread every time. Human nature, or perhaps laziness is to blame. I've been better recently with checking my wording, my phrasing, my overall ability to express what I mean. It's a tricky thing, and shouldn't be made out to be easy.Best,Luke URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=292795#p292795 ___ Audiogames-reflector mailing list Audiogames-reflector@sabahattin-gucukoglu.com https://sabahattin-gucukoglu.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/audiogames-reflector

Was I really THAT guy? Hi folks,It's been awhile since I've been proactively posting on the forum here. The other day I thought it would be fun to check and look at my old postings, between topics and answers.Man, I have to say, I was definitely a real jerk when I wrote out here for a period of time. For those of you who read my stuff, I'm sure it might have crossed your mind that "[[wow]], this guy can be condescending," or maybe "This guy needs to get off his high horse."When I was reading, I noticed I was strongly opinionated, and sometimes asserting things that were not true. I even got into a scuffle with another user, for no good reason, might I add. This was intended for self-reflection, but also to shed light on people (no one who I've encountered on this forum) who don't know how to carry themselves on the net.So to those of you who might have read some poor etiquette in my writing, I do apologize.< /p>Furthermore, the ability to behave well online is nearly just as crucial in interaction as much as it is offline. Re: What is the worst computer you've ever had
Re: What is the worst computer you've ever had Ah yes, my very first computer...The school district purchased an HP Netbook, one of those little dinky 11-inch (if that) machines that rivaled maybe a tablet in terms of processing power. It was loaded with JAWS 12 at the time (2009-2010) and Windows 7 Professional 32-bit. What a hunk of junk! Had I been aware of how crappy that was going to be, I would've saved up money and bought something worth while on my own.Eventually, I wrecked that computer so bad the IT department had to replace the OS on it multiple times. Of course, it was from me screwing around with things I shouldn't have, but the point is that the machine itself was a disgusting disgrace outside of my tampering with it.I think it had maybe 2GB of RAM and was most certainly no more than a 1.6GHZ dual core processor, probably an I3. Re: Microsoft's Surface Book VS. Apple's MacBook Pro 2016 Jack, you brought up another good point I neglected to include -- the introduction of the USB-C ports and the removal of MagSafe power adapters. Two more reasons to add to the list why I'm thankful for getting my MBP when I did. What I like about the Surface Book is that it models after the MBP, where you can configure the machine to your needs. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the previous Surface Pro series didn't offer as many customizable specs like RAM and CPU power. Is it me, or is the fact that it's made specifically by MS assuring? If a company can produce the hardware and OS for a product they sell, I would almost expect it to live up to the awesome claims MS makes about it.16 hours seems generous, but as always battery life varries depending on what activities you are performing.Best,Luke URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=286667#p286667 ___ Audiogames-reflector mailing list Audiogames-reflector@sabahattin-gucukoglu.com https://sabahattin-gucukoglu.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/audiogames-reflector
Microsoft's Surface Book VS. Apple's MacBook Pro 2016
Microsoft's Surface Book VS. Apple's MacBook Pro 2016 Hi folks,Has anyone checked out the new Microsoft Surface Book and the new Apple MacBook Pro?I have to say, I'm quite disappointed with Apple's attempt at a new release of their notebook. Between the touchbar that replaces the function key row and its inability to offer anything more than just upgraded processing power, I thank my lucky stars I bought a mid-2015 model when I did. That's enough of the Apple side, at least in my opinion...The Surface Book seems to be the highlight of Microsoft's line of products this holiday season. What makes it at least an appealing machine is that it has the capability of transforming into a tablet. If I'm not mistaken, the display can also be used as a touchscreen while in laptop mode. The keyboard, from my understanding, detaches and provides functionality across different mobile setups. Integrated with an upgraded battery expected to sustain a 16-hour cycle and a n impressive 2GB dedicated graphics card (which can be upgraded to 4GB), the Surface Book offers quite a bit of power.I currently own an MBP mid-2015 model with Bootcamp running Windows 10. The battery, however, isn't so good when it runs the Windows side. That is obviously to be expected. I just sank $3,000 into this machine, so I'm not considering a Surface Book any time soon, but think it would be beneficial to take a look at if I need a machine dedicated for jhust Windows down the road.In comparison with each other, the Surface Book offers better battery life, more power, and more functionality overall. Apple seems to split the two pieces of functionality between its new MBP and the iPad Pro, whereas Microsoft implemented two in one work-around concerning the laptop and tablet modes. The major shortcoming of the new MBP is that it doesn't offer the touchscreen. I would have thought by now Apple would learn that it& #039;s lagging behind in the innovative way of handling its products, but alas, the lesson hasn't been learned yet. Any thoughts on these two devices? I don't know much about the Surface Book from a user standpoint since it hasn't been released to enough people to give any reviews.Best,Luke URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=286569#p286569 ___ Audiogames-reflector mailing list Audiogames-reflector@sabahattin-gucukoglu.com https://sabahattin-gucukoglu.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/audiogames-reflector

grossgang.com's virtual machines
grossgang.com's virtual machines Hi everyone,Just have a few questions about the virtual machines on grossgang.com. (I don't know who the owner is, so I will have to just ask these questions publicly). One of the Windows XP VM's (the modified one) has an issue with the audio. I'm only getting audio out of the left side of the speakers.I also have the Windows 98 VM, but can't seem to get it to work. Any tips? Finally, were these VM's created from a person's computer just on the fly (just made a VM of their current hard drive), or were they created from a fresh install of Windows with some software and settings on them? Thanks,Luke URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=268250#p268250 ___ Audiogames-reflector mailing list Audiogames-reflector@sabahattin-gucukoglu.com https://sabahattin-gucukoglu.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/audiogames-reflector

Re: Can we turn the power of a computer remotely?
Re: Can we turn the power of a computer remotely? You need to enable Wake-on-LAN in the BIOS and also in device manager. You would also need to find a third-party utility that will help send WOL packets to the target system. This involves a great deal of networking, including portforwarding, and accessing info like your external IP address.Given that the BIOS isn't accessible, and that the third-party utilities might not be either, I would say for a blind user by him or herself to do this is impossible.Edit: I neglected to mention what I described is only available through a local network. Re: Creating a website with no web design experience
Re: Creating a website with no web design experience The problem is that building a website without needing to hand write requires you to interact visually. Most of the programs out there designed to help users who can't grasp HTML5 rely heavily on what they see and where they would like to place what.Let's put this picture in the top right. Let's put a list of links off to the left paneling down the side of the screen. That would be easily done from a sighted perspective. But inputting into a form field the data to make that happen for a blind person would more than likely be just as hard as writing the mark-up language for it.Luke URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=266427#p266427 ___ Audiogames-reflector mailing list Audiogames-reflector@sabahattin-gucukoglu.com https://sabahattin-gucukoglu.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/audiogames-reflector

Re: Creating a website with no web design experience
Re: Creating a website with no web design experience I would argue you don't need to "learn" HTML5. As Grif said, he can do it in his sleep, as can I. It's a mark-up language, not a code in the traditional programming language sense.I've had some experience with Google's website builder, and it is fairly accessible. Remember that Google's main domain name will still be in your domain name so long as you go down the free route. You will also not have a clean slate. Google's site will still be embedded into your site. I'm not sure if that changes if you pay for your own domain and host it on Google's servers. My setup at this point is hand coding HTML5 and hosting my site on GoDaddy. I pay $20 every three months and I get 100GB for all the space I need. I just host several small pages with a database for music for the alumni of my old high school choir. It's very plain, but I don't need the bells and whistles that most sites have. I'm not trying to attract new people by grasping them with shnazzy colors, but those are just my circumstances.W3 schools was already mentioned, and I will bolster that suggestion. It's easy to grab some tags off of sections on their site, and like I said, HTML is a mark-up language, so it's just tags and end tags, nothing too confusing if you can manage nesting.Luke URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=266149#p266149 ___ Audiogames-reflector mailing list Audiogames-reflector@sabahattin-gucukoglu.com https://sabahattin-gucukoglu.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/audiogames-reflector

Re: Buying help for a new laptop...
Re: Buying help for a new laptop... In terms of price, I think the figure on the Thinkpad isn't bad by any means. There's a sacrifice of 4 cores to the processor, but a 6600U dual-core processor still packs a heavy punch. Regarding the graphics, from he's described, he won't need a dedicated graphics card. Unless he's running high-intensive applications that operate primarily from high-resolution graphics, I don't think spending the extra money for a dedicated card is worth it. The on-board preconfigured card should be enough for what he's doing (running other operating systems and some programs for school). The smaller form factors obviously can't handle as much hardware without trading off prices. I'm not sure what he's willing to spend, but bearing all in mind, I couldn't find a 14-inch or smaller computer with high-end specs. Perhaps an inch difference can make little to no difference in terms of battery life and por tability, but all of these factors rest on his preferences.Luke URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=266056#p266056 ___ Audiogames-reflector mailing list Audiogames-reflector@sabahattin-gucukoglu.com https://sabahattin-gucukoglu.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/audiogames-reflector

You are just as capable of installing SKype from the website in Win10 as you were in Win8.1.Regarding your initial bad luck with Win10, I have always advised people not upgrade to 10 from a preinstalled Windows. I'm not a technician, but from the plenty of negative experiences I've heard people having when upgrading to 10 from 8.1, I'm inclined to tell others to wipe Windows and just install Win10 from a disk or an ISO image depending on their circumstances. My advice to you: If you can only afford a $400 machine, what I linked to is just about as good as it can get as far as name brand systems are concerned. If you have more questions, feel free to ask.Luke URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=265961#p265961 ___ Audiogames-reflector mailing list Audiogames-reflector@sabahattin-gucukoglu.com https://sabahattin-gucukoglu.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/audiogames-reflector

Re: Replacing drives on Macbook models I'm afraid when that sad time comes I'll have to take it to a third-party company that specializes in it. To my knowledge, people are doing it with older models, but I never assumed it was because Apple supported upgrades. This will eventually bring me to another questionafter conducting some research, but I'm wondering if I will indeed need to replace the SSD in my machine. Replacing drives on Macbook models Hey all:I'm personally interested in doing this, but I'm merely curious how people upgrade or just simply replace the SSD's in MacBook models.Eventually, I'll wind up selling my MBP2015 (in say 5 years), and would most likely replace the current drive with a fresh one.How do people do it?Just curious! Thanks,Luke URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=265752#p265752 ___ Audiogames-reflector mailing list Audiogames-reflector@sabahattin-gucukoglu.com https://sabahattin-gucukoglu.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/audiogames-reflector
Python question
Python question Hi all:For those of you who have experience with this, I'm wondering how to use the Python interpreter from python.org. I'm learning to code with Python, and am looking for a way to test some code offline.I'm obviously a noob at this, so I'm sorry if my terminology of "interpreter" isn't correct.I'm learning from Codecademy, which has been successful so far. I can test online with the script editor built in to practice with the course, and I'm gleaning that if I just create a notepad document and rename the file extension to .py it'll be run by the interpreter. Please let me know if I'm wrong.I'm running 3.5.1 on Win10.Any help would be greatly appreciated.Luke URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=265441#p265441 ___ Audiogames-reflector mailing list Audiogames-reflector@sabahattin-gucukoglu.com https://sabahattin-gucukoglu.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/audiogames-reflector
Setting up MacBook Pro
Setting up MacBook Pro Hello all,I just put in my order for the 2015 model MacBook Pro.I souped up the processor to the 2.8GHZ quadcore Intel Core I7 processor, alongside 16GB of SDRAM and a 512GB SSD.My goal is to eventually put Windows on it, but I had a few inquiries.Regarding Bootcamp VS. VMware Fusion, I'm curious about processor resources needed to run either or. Is Bootcamp heavier on the CPU than VMware, or vice versa? If I plan to run more intensive programs on the Windows side of my computer through VMware will I encounter lag? I'm planning to run a basic setup through Windows, like Jaws, OpenBook, things of that nature, and also Sonar with CakeTalking. I imagine running OSX will not render any problem if it's running alongside Windows in VMware, but I wanted to know if anyone has any thoughts on this. Now, regarding peripherals, I took a look at Apple's superdrive, and am wondering if there is a better, and, um, che aper alternative solution. I suppose at the end of the day I don't need the ability to use a disc reader, but it would be nice to install everything I own through the original discs. The Superdrive is retailed at $80, and I'm fairly certain there are other drives that can do the same thing, so any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for the help in advance.Luke URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=261311#p261311 ___ Audiogames-reflector mailing list Audiogames-reflector@sabahattin-gucukoglu.com https://sabahattin-gucukoglu.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/audiogames-reflector
Re: New computer, what should I go for, mac, windows etc
Re: New computer, what should I go for, mac, windows etc I just sold my soul to Apple for one of their MacBook Pro models. A 15-inch machine with a 2.8GHZ Intel Core I7 processor with turbo boost up to 4.0GHZ, 16GB of SDRAM, and 512GB of SSD. That, my friend, runs near $3,000.The reason why I'm investing in one is because I'm an Apple mobile user, so integrating a computer machine would be efficient for my mobile devices (my iPhone and iPad). Being able to install a version of Windows makes it all the more worth it, so having a machine dedicated to just Windows isn't necessary, but it is good to have a backup.I'm a music editor and recorder, so Protools, Garage Band, Logic Pro, etc, are such examples of programs only available and accessible on OSX.Macs actually don't lose their retail value, and quite honestly, the hardware is superior. The processor power, RAM, etc, is not part of the equation. I think it's the actual build of the system. The metal will survive for many, many years. Countless users have reported just slowness of the machine after say 7 or more years of using their Mac.Luke URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=261058#p261058 ___ Audiogames-reflector mailing list Audiogames-reflector@sabahattin-gucukoglu.com https://sabahattin-gucukoglu.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/audiogames-reflector

Re: Is it possible to learn music braillenotes without a braille display?
Re: Is it possible to learn music braillenotes without a braille display? I would recommend reviewing Hadley School for the Blind's braille music course. I'm signing up for it this summer. I'm a music major and need to read braille music in order to make life easier...If you are indeed outside of the U.S., I believe Hadley still ofers their course, but take that with a grain of salt. Without a braille display, you'll obviously need hard copy, which isn't easy to obtain even in the U.S. from certain lenders.I'm curious -- are you learning for sake of education, or recreation? From what it sounds like, learning braille music notation will help further your understanding of how music is written and composed.Another thing to consider is how comprehensive your knowledge of music theory is. Notation will be pointless to learn if you aren't learning both simultaneou sly. Note any course you take for reading braille music is simply that, reading it, not understanding the theory behind it. Perhaps there are materials that can do both.Luke URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=258216#p258216 ___ Audiogames-reflector mailing list Audiogames-reflector@sabahattin-gucukoglu.com https://sabahattin-gucukoglu.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/audiogames-reflector
Re: Identifying unusual musical chords
Re: Identifying unusual musical chords I think just being a well-experienced musician provides the greatest amount of skill for this before looking at a score. Jazz performers tend to improvise the most out of any types of musicians I know.I'm interested though -- perfect pitch is when you hear a note and can identify it without another pitch, obviously meaning relative pitch. But what happens when you don't hear a note in a chord? I'm not sure that wouldn't necessarily be perfect pitch. If they personally cannot pick out certain notes, I don't think that's diminishing they're ability to identify them...Luke URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=257909#p257909 ___ Audiogames-reflector mailing list Audiogames-reflector@sabahattin-gucukoglu.com https://sabahattin-gucukoglu.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/audiogames-reflector

Re: Facebook's new AI, total BS @CAE_Jones,Screenshots are easier to do than copy/paste. Why should people have to select text, copy it, and then paste it? It's a three step process whereas screenshots take a button or button combination and it's easier to send over certain media. You could argue that it's mostly a visual thing where a picture captures it all instead of copying the entirety of the text (an entire Facebook status, when it was posted, and the nunmber of reactions, for example).Best Regards,Luke URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=256158#p256158 ___ Audiogames-reflector mailing list Audiogames-reflector@sabahattin-gucukoglu.com https://sabahattin-gucukoglu.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/audiogames-reflector

Facebook's new AI, total BS
Facebook's new AI, total BS For those of you who don't know, Facebook unveiled its new technology that uses an AI to identify pictures. The feature has been slowly rolling out to users who use screen readers and in particular, iOS.I've encountered tens of shares on this feature that have been covered by multiple popular sources, and I got a chance to check out the hot new addition today. My thoughts? Total bogus.TapTapSee has been at this for much longer and still has issues. It, like Facebook, relies on solely artificial intelligence to recognize pixels in particular patterns to deliver a description of what is in the picture to the user. Google Imgaes runs off of the same work-around, with similar images coming up based on the way pixels are arranged and finds photos with similar patterns or structures. As far as I can tell, alternative text only appears when human faces are present, a quick "indoor or outdoor" dichotomous interpretation , and the quantity of faces. It doesn't give anything more than those factors, and it is without a doubt it is virtually useless.I'm sure most of us who use Facebook on iOS have seen this feature implemented; if not, you aren't missing out.Best Regards,Luke URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=256133#p256133 ___ Audiogames-reflector mailing list Audiogames-reflector@sabahattin-gucukoglu.com https://sabahattin-gucukoglu.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/audiogames-reflector

Re: iPhone 6S Plus and its quirks
Re: iPhone 6S Plus and its quirks I'm not sure where to go for the VO problem. The battery, on the other hand, is fine. I got a day an a half out of it, even with heavy usage. It's important to know what is considered a "day." Much like a work day can be 8 hours, a school day can be 6 or 7 depending on how your district ran things back in the good old days of public education. I would assume a "day and a half" works much the same way, in the sense people wake up at a certain time, take off their phone from its charger, and use it with much more intensity as the day goes on. Like other social constructs, the phone's "day" ends when the person is done for a long period of time, or in this case, when they go to bed. But this varies, and so I've learned to take that term, day, with a grain of salt.Back to VO: @Jeffb, yes, I turned off audio ducking and it still seems to be doing the same thing. There's no doub t in my mind this is exclusively a VoiceOver problem, not a hardware issue. But if others aren't experiencing this, then what's the problem? This is a brand new phone, and Apple did a diagnostic test on it that turned a 100% positive result. It probably isn't worth going through the struggle to replace this phone at a different vender, but it's still annoying nonetheless.Best Regards,Luke URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=254172#p254172 ___ Audiogames-reflector mailing list Audiogames-reflector@sabahattin-gucukoglu.com https://sabahattin-gucukoglu.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/audiogames-reflector

Re: Want your advice. Please help with keyboards and garage band When you look at the prices for stand-alone workstations, they are much more expensive then a, for lack of better words, "regular digital keyboard" costs. I personally have a Yamaha DGX505 which is only USB out, but that's okay. You don't need midi unless as Nocturnus pointed out, you're controlling just midi. I have a Sonar setup which works well with my Yamaha, and quite honestly I would recommend that for the prrice. The Motif series gets to be a bit up there in price, but bare in mind they are meant to work as both a DAW and an instrument, meaning it would eliminate the need for recording software.Best Regards,Luke URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=254175#p254175 ___ Audiogames-reflector mailing list Audiogames-reflector@sabahattin-gucukoglu.com https://sabahattin-gucukoglu.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/audiogames-reflector
