Re: 2MB Game engine in the works -- any beta testers?

Hi guys. For anyone who isn't subscribed to the 2mb news letter, here is an update that they sentWelcome back to another late edition of the 2MB newsletter! It's not going to be a trend, we promise!First of all, remember that this is not spam. You signed up to this newsletter while purchasing or downloading a product from us in the past. If you don't want to receive any more of our lovely newsletters there's always an unsubscribe link at the bottom, but we'll terribly miss you.Now that that's out of the way, On to the news!## Our game engine is still coming! Our game engine we announced in December has been delayed, but it's still coming. For anyone who hasn't heard about the game engine, it's basically going to be a cross platform engine that allows you to write in lua and compile the finished product into a full game to be distributed. It will have some other advanced features, such as the ability to add custom c++ code as well. For anyone who would like to beta test the engine after it is ready, please email us at michael@2mb.solutions and we'll add you to the list. If you have already done so we still have your email, so no need to do so again.## Server moveWe have recently moved server locations to a coop hosting organization in California. This is part of why our game engine has been delayed. That being said, if you see any issues please let us know. The server move involved moving the server from one location to another, so many things internally have changed. Btw, for the curious, a coop hosting organization is one that is owned and run by the members. It's really quite great.## Code Dungeon comes to linuxWe're happy to announce that we've been working with stealcase, maker of Code Dungeon, to help get linux compatability working on his game. It's not quite there yet, but it's moving along. You can get [Code Dungeon at this link](stealcase.itch.io/codedungeon). In short, Code Dungeon is a randomly generated roguelike game where you must escape a dungeon of four increasingly difficult floors.## We're happy to announce 2MB Patron! After a few false starts, 2MB Patron is finally arriving! 2MB Patron is a subscription service similar to Patreon where you can subscribe to 2MB and gain perks in return. You can find more information on [2MB Patron here](2mb.games/product/2mb-patron/) but in short, depending what tier you subscribe to, you can gain perks such as a patron-only forum, sneak peeks at upcoming games, devlog information, free games, and more! Do note that not everything for 2MB Patron is up and running yet, but that which is is great, and if anything is based monthly we will give access to all the perks for each month you subscribed after they are ready.## Site redesignWe have redesigned our site to hopefully be easier to navigate. Now you can actually get to the sub-menus on the top bar, and we actually have links to our products in the menu. Check out the [2MB Games website](2mb.games) and let us know what you think!## From MichaelI've been working hard on the website and the game engine over the last several weeks, and I'm excited to share it all with you. If you have any questions about the updates above you can get in touch at michael@2mb.solutions. I'll be glad to get it all up and running and thanks for reading!## From BillyI've been working on my own projects recently, and I'd like to let you all know about them. First of all, I've been doing classes about different technology topics on the stormux server. I've taught a class on simple bash, and tintin scripting so far, and have several plans for more classes. You can learn about new courses through this newsletter, or by subscribing to the [stormux list](stormux.groups.io). You can also purchase access to recordings of previous courses at the [stormux ko-fi shop](ko-fi.com/stormux). The next class will be March 4, at 2:00 PM eastern time. It will be about regular expressions and will be partly taught by Michael as well. Because of the depth of this class, it will cost $25 USD to join, but patrons of the [stormux patreon](patreon.com/stormux) at the $5 tier or higher will get access for free. You can also sign up on the [stormux ko-fi](ko-fi.com/stormux) at $5 or more and gain access as well. In addition, I've been working on tintin-rsgames, an rs games client written in tintin, and meant to be played in the console. You can check out [tintin rs games here](gitlab.com/stormdragon2976/tintin-rsgames) and let me know what you think! I've also been working on BASHtml, a project to make a mostly static blog using bash. Check [BASHtml out here](gitlab.com/stormdragon2976/bashtml). Wow, I've been busy! If you have any questions about the newsletter or discussion you can get in touch at storm_dra...@linux-a11y.org.Thanks all for reading! We'll be back

Re: 2MB Game engine in the works -- any beta testers?

It does not have a networking library as of yet, though we do have plans for one. That's definitely near the top of our priority list. As for using external lua code, it may need some tweeking, but if you were to require('xxx') where xxx was an external lua library, it should just pick it up if it's in a suitable location. The lua interpretter works as always, so the requirement directories for modules is still able to be used. In addition, if we can get it working, we do have plans to allow extending the engine in c++ and compiling it along with your game, but that's not here yet.To recap: no networking yet, but it's definitely on the table, and external lua libraries should work just fine.Thanks!-Michael.

If not, I'm hoping you'll be able to use an existing Lua networking library, but I suspect you won't be able to use external lua code because BGT didn't let you use external AngelScript code--not that you'd want to.

Re: 2MB Game engine in the works -- any beta testers?

Hi all,A few responses:The game engine will be open source, and pull requests will be gladly accepted. The documentation when beta comes out will be mostly complete, meaning there will be at the very least a description of all classes, functions, and their parameters and return values, but as it's a beta previous programming experience would be helpful. There are also going to be several examples mini games that will come with the package, so those should provide a good footing as well. The lua to c++ code is using LuaBridge. It was the simplest to set up, and apparently the fastest for c++ besides one other that barely beats it out by a hair. Also, just a note, the game engine will be open source, but anyone using it will not be required to make their game open source though the more open source the merrier. And the engine will be totally free. We are tentatively going to allow people to sponsor features for the engine, but as mentioned, the engine will be open source and pull requests accepted, so the community can also contribute features. Thanks all!-Michael.

Re: 2MB Game engine in the works -- any beta testers?

Well, I am doing most of the documentation. So, I hope it will be good. Of course that is one thing beta testers will give feedback on. We really want to have a stable engine when we make it public. I think when it does go public, feedback and requests will come thick and fast. We want to be ready.I kind of think of this engine as a game engine for gamers written by gamers. That being said, the documentation will be open too, so I am sure it will improve after the release, but if I do it right, maybe not by all that much.

no, Please god no, Not another bgt, Maybe just do the engine be able to be wrapped from the language it self? But making it a new language... God please no, I were feeling grate that 99% of bgt devs moved to python and now, We will get a recatch from 2010, Oh boy.

Re: 2MB Game engine in the works -- any beta testers?

This is the inevitable post where I point out that there's no reason whatsoever to avoid using a regular programming language coupled with libraries that do the engine and a "here's a new project" template, rather than doing the thing the community is just barely escaping where we have the blindie game engine ghetto.  It's also the inevitable point where everyone ignores me, but hey, I tried.maybe you have some amazing solution for, e.g., third party dependencies that don't have to be written by other users of the engine.  If you don't solve all the "I'm an experienced programmer" problems this is only going to draw newbies and we'll be right back where we were 5 years ago.And before someone is like "well what technology would you choose, I don't like python because reason and it needs to be newbie friendly" my answer to that is Go.  I don't like Go but it is newbie friendly and if someone produced all the tooling for it, it could be a good enough option.  You could also embed V8 and get NPM working with a bit of fiddling--you'd need Node to manage packages, but nothing actually requires node to be involved in running the app, it's just a way to get them installed. Also, please at least say it's not going to be a commercial engine.

2MB Game engine in the works -- any beta testers?

Hi all,As I talked about in our newsletter released today, we're in the process of developing a new game engine. It's cross platform on mac linux and windows, and will be scripted in lua. It will be similar to bgt in the way it operates, with some differences that I can tell more about if they'd like. Anyway, if anyone wants to help beta test it -- we've got an alpha worthy start on it now, then please let me know. You can contact me through our contact page at https://2mb.games/contact-us/.Thanks!-Michael, 2MB.
