Re: Android tablet versus Kindle Fire

Thanks everyone. I'll probably ggo with the Kindle Fire. For $50 versus $400, I'll accept Amazon's limitations. There are ways around most, if not all, of them.

Re: Android tablet versus Kindle Fire

Android 4.0? As in Android Ice Cream Sandwich? If so, things have improved by leaps and bounds. You've got explore by touch as well as flicking around. The latest version of Fire OS is based off Android 5.1.1, so you should be fine if you get the Fire, unless, of course, you don't like the Amazon modifications. It really comes down to personal choice. If you get the $50 Fire, you won't lose that much if you don't like it. I don't know what else to say. If you want an Android tablet, I suppose you could get the Samsung tablets. I don't know anything about htose because I cannot stand Samsung Android devices. THere's also the Nexus 9, but that might be out of your desired price range since it starts at $399 for the 16 GB model. Still, you get stock Android with zero modifications. I'm still trying to comprehend the fact that I can buy an accessible tablet for $50.

The last time I used Android was on an LG Spirit cell phone running Android 4.

Re: Android tablet versus Kindle Fire

Amazon's new screen readerh as different sounds when navigating around. From what I've heard, it also has a punctuation setting which TalkBack doesn't have. I find the sounds for VoiceView are much more pleasant to listen to compared to TalkBack. Amazon also has this new wheel type of gesture that allows you to quickly skim through content. When I get my Fire, I will be able to give more helpful information. While on the subect of screen readers, TalkBack has recently received somep retty big updates including better web support, keyboard commands and some other things. When was the last time you tried Android? I'd get something running Android 6 or if you have to 5.1.1. HOwever, don't get anything older than 5.0 because 5.0 was when web support and some other things really started to improve. I remember the bad old days when TalkBack used to say web view and the whole device would lock up. Thankfully, those are gone.

Re: Android tablet versus Kindle Fire

You might want to get the $50 Fire tablet. What do you want to do with the tablet? If it's basic things, the Fire might work well enough. I'm going to give in and purchase this thing. It's incredibly cheap so if I decide it's worthless, who cares. The Fire does have a Micro SD slot that supports up to 128 gb cards, so if expandable storage is a perk, you might want to go with that device. Now I'm starting to wonder why I bought my Nexus 7 2 years ago for $224 with no expandable storage.I believe it is possible to root that $50 tablet and install a custom ROM. If worse comes to worse and you hate Amazon's forked version of Android, that is an option. Well, I'm off to buy one of these incredibly cheap tablets. I love getting new toys!

Re: Android tablet versus Kindle Fire

There's also the Samsung galaxy tablets as well. I've got a samsung galaxy phone, it's OK but you have to customize it a lot. It's got the google play store and you can buy eloquence I don't know if you can buy vocalizer or not. You can get the free eSpeak, I think there's also a few other synths that I forgot to list.

Re: Android tablet versus Kindle Fire

Hello,While I haven't used Fire OS, I can tell you that it does not contain the Google Play Store. If you want access to millions of apps, I'd get a tablet running stock or near stock Android. The Kindle Fire tablets are based off Android, but Amazon has customized them and removed all Google Services. Amazon's screen reader sounds kind of interesting though. Go listen to the recent main menu podcast which demos the Kindle Fire. If you don't mind being locked into Amazon's ecosystem, the $50 fire tablet might work. Of course, I hear you can install the play store onto the Fire tablet, so you might not care. I'm tempted to buy one of these tablets just to see what it's all about.

Re: Android tablet versus Kindle Fire

Well, if you want a cheap tablet, Kindle's fire tablet is insanely cheap, about 50 bucks. But if you really want a trustable, accessible tablet that will last long, I recommend the nexus line of tablets from google. I use a nexus 5 phone, and even though it may not officially get the new version of android, android n, I am confident that there will be a cyanogen build for that version, which is alright because I'm fairly used to custom roms anyways.
