JGT, the easy way to play ShadowRine and BK3 in English. I've just released my Japanese Games Translator addon for NVDA. JGT for short.The JGT addon lets you translate text while playing Japanese audio games. It focuses on 2 things:First, to give newcomers to Japanese games the simplest experience possible to get started playing and enjoying them. Meaning, it requires less software to install and things to configure than other solutions, and gives you step by step instructions to get started.Second, to provide a more automatic and seamless translation experience than is currently supported by other sets of tools. For instance, when auto translate last spoken is enabled you can arrow through menus and immediately hear the English version of each menu item, without pressing an extra hot key.At this point I support ShadowRine and Bokurano Daibouken 3. If you have other Japanese games you would like it to support, contact me at supp...@blindaudiogames.com with details a bout what the game is and how I can get started playing it.I started writing this addon because the better known instant translate addon stopped working due to changes Google made to stop unauthorized use of its translation service. Since then QTranslate has become an alternative solution. I believe this addon provides a better experience for the games it supports. That said, if you're happy with the current QTranslate, ClipCopy, ClipReader, ProTalker, Japanese keyboard, and appLocale setup; then this addon may not be for you as the list of games it supports is more limited.This addon contacts my own server which then uses the paid Google Translate service. I implement my own caching to limit the charges I receive. If you are using an installed version of NVDA, just press enter on the addon after you have downloaded it.Alternatively you can open the NVDA menu with NVDA + N.Then go to tools > manage add ons.Then press the install button and choose the addon in the open file dialog. I am using the newest NVDA-Snapshot. Maybe your addon is only working with the regular versions of NVDA? Hi firefly, that is possible.To be honest I am still using version 2015.3.I will ensure it works in at least 2015.4.If you press NVDA + F1 it will bring up the NVDA log viewer.You can start at the top and go down until you find some lines that say error at the front.Then send me those lines and a few before and after them so I have a better idea of what the error is.Thanks for your patience, bugs are inevitable in newly released software, and up till now I have been the only one testing this. When I download the addon, I get a .zip file, and nothing seems to happen when I press enter on it besides the computer saying that it can't open it. I tried unzipping it and pressing enter on the files contained within the folder, but still nothing haha not sure what's up. Re: JGT, the easy way to play ShadowRine and BK3 in English. moore2it, are you using NVDA or another screen reader?The addon only works with NVDA.The addon is supposed to download with the nvda-addon file extension.The exact file name is: JGT.nvda-addonNVDA addons are technically just zip files, perhaps your browser noticed that and put the .zip extension on the end.You could change the extension back to .nvda-addon and try the instructions I posted earlier.It is also possible to extract the files yourself and put them in the NVDA addons folder, but the first is probably easier. Re: JGT, the easy way to play ShadowRine and BK3 in English. @Firefly, those are the correct lines, but off hand I am not sure why that is happening in the snapshot version.I upgraded to NVDA 2015.4, so at least I'm up to date now.Thanks for being willing to use the 2015 version for now.@CAE_Jones, yes I account for numbers and at least English names.Those all get replaced by number substitutions before I check for it in my database or send the text to google.Then those number substitutions get replaced with their original English characters or numbers before they are sent back to the player.So this means text like:Ian has 5 rice balls.Or:CaeJones has 10 rice balls.Where the obvious words are in Japanese, only get translated once.The number substitutions occasionally cause problems because google gets over zealous and turns the number 1 into the word January when there are numbers that look like a date.This has been a problem for the BK3 load game menu for instan ce.In those cases I have been fixing them manually.I had about 3000 translation records before sharing the addon publicly and this problem happened on very few records, so for now it is not a big deal.I'm sure there will be other improvements as time goes on, fortunately I should be able to make them server side so I don't have to rely on people upgrading. When your session times out it is supposed to tell you, but instead it is just reporting blank as you move through uncached menu items.So just login with the JGT login dialog again and it will start working again.Sessions expire after an hour of not playing.I'll try to get that fixed. To hear the translated text I have to press insert + c to read the clipboard. And I have enabled with control insert shift y the autotranslate mode. Another problem is that if I don't change the keyboard to japanese doesn't read and translate correctly. There will always be some cases that can result in more new text to translate.For instance when you put things in the warehouse in BK3, it combines many statements telling you what it is putting in the warehouse into a single string.With the number of items in the game, you can imagine how many possible combinations there are.But all the storyline and normal menu translations should eventually approach a complete database of translations.Fortunately google has very reasonable pricing.I don't have a good idea of how much text is actually in each game, so it will be interesting to see how many translation records we have when things slow down.@ambro86, which game are you playing, and have you set the game to output to NVDA?If the game is outputting to the clipboard, that would explain why it is not being automatically read and why you need the Japanese keyboard.The instructions I gave for ShadowRine explain how to get it to output to NVDA.A fresh install of BK3 is set to automatically detect NVDA so needs no changes.If you've changed either game to output to the clipboard then you'll have to fix that.@Riad, thanks very much.Yes, I started with ShadowRine and BK3 because they are the 2 I have played and so I can give step by step instructions for them.But everyone is welcome to use the addon for any of the BK games.I'm glad to hear the addon works for BK2.I'm surprised it worked on Nyanchin's website.I'll be adding support for other Japanese games as I get time, as long as they don't have problems that would introduce an infinite or exponential number of translations.[[wow]], thanks very much for the offer of a donation.I don't currently have any way to accept donations, but may be I'll look into that at some point. However, my current issue right now is that App Locale won't work on Windows 10, the Japanese pack won't install it keeps coming up with an error, even though I'm admin, and NVDA-SHFT-U only seems to come back with the Japanese because the language pack isn't installed. I removed the Language pack because I was getting native Windows dialogues etc in Japanese. To clarify, I installed it for the first time without problems once, removed it due to frustration with everyday tasks, and now cannot install it again.I wonder if we can do something about this in regard to the addon. I just fixed some of the issues:The addon should now properly tell you when your session has expired, instead of just saying blank on everything you try to translate.The ian_shared.pyo thing is fixed, so the addon might work on NVDA snapshots now, but I don't have those to test with. That first screen does not display correct Japanese text unless you are using appLocale and possibly the Japanese keyboard.I translated the buttons with appLocale on, then hardcoded the gibberish that Windows displays when it is off to be the correct translations, at least for the buttons.That is why it works in the audio demo.I'm not sure why it doesn't work for some people, perhaps if they are using an Italian or Spanish version of Windows they get different gibberish than I do.That said, I did include instructions in the JGT user manual for setting ShadowRine to output to NVDA without being able to read the buttons in that first dialog. This is what happened on Snapshots before, but a downgrade to 16.4 fixed it. By that I mean removing NVDA via it's installer, restarting, and then removing the NVDA folder from %appdata%. I of course made a backup of my addons folder, but reinstalled JGT fresh before adding my other addons. It's working great now, let's hope it continues this way.On a side note, Gekiransen: All Star Batnet, if the translation is even translating that correctly, really needs auto translation support with JGT. At the beginning of the game, you have to configure your keys to move your character. This means that when you're doing that, you can't hit NVDA-SHFT-U to see what the instructions are--which key you're about to press what it will be mapped to. I've tried this several times and I come out in the end mapping stuff like caps lock to random inputs because of the translate clipboard keystroke.Also, I've been thinking, but is there a way for Ian to add the ability to, say, in the text games, when a menu comes up to do an NVDA command to copy that text to the clipboard and then auto translate it? The more I think about it the more I think it'd be impossible to add the auto translation functionallity to these menus so we can just arrow through them like a treditional menu. Why these games don't just copy menu text to the clipboard like they do everything else is kinda strange. The problem with opening up the site to human translators of all walks is that inevitably, some people will correct the grammar corrections that other people have made over other peoples' corrections. Confusing? yeah... I coined it like that on purpose. I agree with Ian, it should be someone who knows both languages... but not just knows both, but also has the patience and time to sit down and figure out the nuances. anyone who wants to translate should have to prove that they can actual do the translating properly and with good quality rather than just fixing grammar mistakes google makes. This isn't meant to sound alienating or elitist... just some of my thoughts and because I'm a stickler for perfection when it comes to most things. Here's another thing: For BK3, weapon advisor: I'd love to be able to copy the entire list of weapons I'm missing to the clipboard, in English. problem is, I can't, because the text is immediately replaced with a confirmation that the text was successfully copied. I guess I could down arrow through the entire list and paste into a document, but that'd kinda suck, I'd have to do it for the descriptive text too. hahaha. The demo just gives you a feel for the game, since it was released before the full version, it also unlocks a password for beating it.
