Re: A question about the ps4 and accessibbility

At least regarding Japanese games, I can pretty confidently say that you shouldn't be so quick to make that assumption... most of the those games are not actually developed by Sony, but by other smaller Japanese studios. And while it's true that if someone was simply to look at the consoles from a surface point of view than yes, the xbox1 simply reads more.. but as with most things, it's important to look beyond the surface and understand why. So yes, I continuously point out the different structures of the accessibility design, but not out of a desire to annoy people or smash Microsoft for what they've done. And Sony has always released updates on the ps3 and 4 less frequently than Microsoft, that isn't anything new. They take more time between updates, but when they come out they're usually worth the wait. Again, I'm not trying to make the ps4 sound better than the xbox1... not what I'm about here. I like the xbox1 well enough, just wish t
here were more reasons for me to get it in terms of playable games.

Re: A question about the ps4 and accessibbility

@assault_freakThe reason I mentioned the company HQ (headquarters) was because Sony are out of Japan primarily, though they have a worldwide network as well.  Consequently, they release far more japanese games than anything else, from what I'm understanding though I could be incorrect on that.I call Sony's efforts minimum not out of disrespect for the fact that the systems are built differently, but out of the fact that if you compare the two systems side-by-side, as you would if you were a casual user (uninterested in the framework side of things as you seem pretty hung up on continuously pointing out,) the amount that Microsoft's effort reads compared to Sony's is pretty substantial.  Yes, both systems have their flaws, I'm happy to admit that.  However, currnelty regardless of the reasons why, Microsoft seem to have the edge in both functions and updating. If that changes, it'll be interesting.

People calling Sony's efforts minimum need to realize that the TTS systems are built on completely different frameworks, and once again, Narrator has been in the works on Windows forever. As for the Japanese games, those aren't the only exclusives... and I'm not sure what HQ is or what they have to do with this conversation. lolRegarding the use of the third menu, every game actually does it, but you need to be signed into the psn. It contains things for finding the game's twitter feed, information, check online things like leader boards and stats, as well as dlc and again, every game has it.

Disclaimer: I don't have a PS4, only the Xbox One and don't really care for all the Japanese games that the PS4 (for reasons including the company's HQ) seems to favour. Even SFV doesn't seem that interesting to me, though once I get myself a graphics card I intend to try it on PC.@SLJI'll have to respectfully disagree - the Xbox site is actually easier to buy games from, I tried using the PS store at one point (the site that is) and it was a mess to figure out what was going on in comparison. You admit yourself that you haven't had much experience with your Xbox.  I'd suggest playing around with it and trying to see how you find the menus after a while (I find them little to no trouble myself most of the time and narrator's updates etc as they are being worked on will doubtless improve things compared to sony's minimum efforts)

Re: A question about the ps4 and accessibbility

Hi.I have both the XBox 1 and a ps4. I bought the XBox 1 because I got so pissed at Sony, because they won't let us outside the US use the TTS function.I don't have as much experience with my XBox yet, but here is my thoughts so far.The Playstation store seems to be easier to use than the XBox store for buying games. That is, if you wanna purchase the games from the website and not directly on the console. As others have said, there are ore playable games on the ps4.The menus on the ps4 are much, much more simple to use than the XBox. I even find the XBox menus pretty confusing when using Narrator. The accessibility on the XBox is in my opinion really the reason for getting this console. That is, if you live alone and don't have sighted help like me. But if you do have sighted help pretty often, then I'll say the ps4 is the way to go. If you live in the US, you'll get a screenreader no matter what console you're getti
ng. If you only need the screenreader to select the game you wanna play and won't use the other features, well, it won't really matter what console you get, regarding to the accessibility.

Re: A question about the ps4 and accessibbility

Backwards compatibility on the playstation is definitely a pain... but I'm lucky as I own all the playstation consoles. Here are some reasons I went for the ps4, and hopefully combined with Mike's list, this may help you to make a decision.1. The Game LibraryThe list of games for the ps4 that are playable at the moment are more numerous. Aside from the afore-mentioned Street Fighter V and Mortal Kombat, the list also includes the Guilty gear series, Samurai Warriors 4, J-Stars Victory VS, Saint Seiya: Soldier's Soul, and many upcoming games such as King of Fighters XIV and Tekken 7 next year. The ps4's also not region-locked, meaning you can buy games that may not be released in your country such as games that only come out in Japan. The ps4, in general, also has more appealing exclusives to me which I can play with sighted friends' help such as the Ryu Ga Gotoku or Yakuza Series, as were most of the games I mentioned earlier.2. Blueray
Player. Not a big deal for most people, but if you want to watch movies and the like with friends coming over, you don't need an extra blueray player for your system. My ps3 and pa4 can both play bd's, which is awesome.3. Consistency in the interface. Microsoft frequently changed their dashboard with the xbox360, and to me at least the ps4 has a much cleaner and less cluttered interface and menus than its peer. But that's purely preference, I suppose... Sony also very rarely releases updates that change where things are on the home screen, so it's not necessary to relearn the interface. the only difficult thing is that games are sorted by whichever one you most recently played, so that's something to keep in mind as that screen will move when you download new games or play different games / use apps. 4. Price and durability. The ps4, to me, is of a much better size than the xbox1 as it's smaller overall. It's also cooler and gets less h
ot than the xbox, which is good as it can generally last longer and under more severe conditions, according to tests I've looked up. The power cable also doesn't have a brick atatched to it... which is another bonus as it uses most power cables that Sony sells for many of their products. The price point is also interesting.. it depends on the place you are, and times may have changed, but the original msrp of the ps4 was actually $100 cheaper than the xbox1.That's my own personal list. I love Killer Instinct, and that the xbox1 reads more things out loud, but I just enjoy more games on the ps4... many of which don't exist on the xbox1. The accessibility isn't quite there yet, and is only available on hardware sold in America which means ps4 users not in America will have to buy American consoles, or simply not have it... which is a huge downer even for me. But Sony have also been releasing updates which improve its reading ability, so I'm keeping
my fingers crossed for constant improvement... and if not, I will simply use consoles as I have for the last 10 20 years and deal with the lack of accessibility. Just my two sense. Hope this list helped!

Re: A question about the ps4 and accessibbility

Hi,I own a xbox one myself, but a few factors for me deciding for the xbox one were:1. the xbox one owns backward compability. i also own the skullgirls game originally build for the xbox 360 and it runs it just fine. the only downside is that the console needs to be optimised for certain games, cause when i purchased skullgirls i was Lucky skullgirls was already available for the xbox one. but not all games from the 360 are compatible right from the start. when updates of the console become available more games from the 360 also will become available, allthough this is what i suppose. correct me if i am mistaken.2. the accessibility, when i was going back and forth between a xbox one and a ps4, i was gathering as much information as i could get about both consoles. but at that time, and now still, i hear more about access additions from the xbox one then about the ps4. i don't want to smash down the ps series beneed the surface, but in my oppinion xbox h
as more accessibility build into it and gets frequend updates.3. a few apps i have tried from the xbox are also accessible with narator, Skype, the mediaplayer and game dvr are accessible for example. mediaplayer and game dvr are since the last update. this enables you browsing through your usb-stick connected to it with media on it, or a nas, wich i own.4. a downside i find, is that there aren't that much games playable for us, but i suppose the ps4 isn't much better on that front. for xbox one there is killer instinct, and for the ps4 there is the streetfighter series, and for both consoles there is mortal kombat x. but i have choosen for killer instinct, wasn't very knowledgable for what i bought, but now i really love it.5. and my final factor for why i have choosen for the xbox one, this one is the least important for you i suppose, but i also choosen a bit forthe xbox one, cause when i was sighted i owned the very first xbox, so i was famili
ar to the controller already. but as i said, that should be the least important factor for you, but i admit i am glad it became the xbox cause from my past. But access wise the xbox is far better than the ps4 for what i hear about the ps4. but i can tell you the xbox is very accessible in it's menu's.but the final choice is up to you. i am not going to tell you wheter to buy a xbox or a ps4. that is a personal choice, i only wrote down my own experiences and my reasons for prefering the xbox over the playstation.hthgreetz mike

Is there anything aside form accessbility playing a role in getting one or the other that you would find a reason buying one over the other? I know that backward compatibilility for the ps is a pain as you cannot play ps3 games. I don't want accessibility to be strictly a factor for ruling the ps4 out. I do know that the xbox 1 is actually cheaper than the ps4  but what othere factors would in consider when getting one or the other.

Re: A question about the ps4 and accessibbility

Simple answer. If accessibility going to be a deal breaker, then get the xbox1. The ps4 tts, while less sluggish and more responsive, reads less than the xbox1. Narrator reads more of the interface as Microsoft already had a framework for building text-to-speech, so most of the console is read out loud. Game menus are not read by either console, because they are graphical images with embedded text, not plain text that's processable by the console.
