hi guys. I'm looking to see if anyone would be interested in recording the audio of the speak and music and little maistro games put out by texis instruments in the mid 1980s. they are closely related to the speak and spell. also would be interested in a sepparate library for game and watch (and other similar handhelds) sounds as an independent project (my submissions were rejected for obvious reasons, but were only even put up there for historical interest).

Re: Gaging interest in the public electronic game library

We know of the original Copy cat, unfortunately no one has it so we don't have a lot of details, and to be quite honest the only reason we included the Pocket repeat is because it isn't! Emulatable in Mame. Btw the exclamation mark doesn't mean I'm shouting, it just strengthens the point of the statement I'm trying to make.

Re: Gaging interest in the public electronic game library

You can do whatever you want with the sounds, as long as you aren't using them in commercial works. We have no right to these sounds ourselves, we just recorded them from the games, which means the sounds are not ours, but owned by the companies who released them. Thus, using the sounds in a payed project could lead into problems. Also, if you do end up using them, some credit would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Gaging interest in the public electronic game library

Hello,I finally found my 2004 merlin and will be in the process of uploading it's sounds. However due to the no square waves rule, I will likely only record the sounds that were added in the 2004 version (in other words, the voice samples). the non voice samples are the same as the original 1978 merlin. I only considdered adding it for 2 reasons: first, it was the first multigame handheld (in fact, it's even more ambbicious than say bopit or the brain warp/shift), and secondly, because 2 of the games are totally playable: 1 is a simon clone of course, the other is a music composition program. a third, magic square, is not accessible, but it also impossible to lose since it's the only game (not counting the music program) without a computer oponent. I only submitted the game and watch and mattel stuff for historical reasons.

Putting that as the introduction line to the server post was a mistake. I totally regret that, but not going to erase it. Ah well.As far as the public library, we will do bigger more spread out updates rather than an update for each time a new game has been trimmed. That would create lots of spam and overall be more work.

OK Americandad2005, I agree with Ivan on this, you just sent me like a million files that I may not even include. I don't know if you understand me or not, or if you have read the readme, but I specifically told you guys, 1, no square waves, and 2, no inaccessible consoles. Please! Is this so hard to understand? About updating the library, if there would be a way for someone to extract the current folder and let certain people access it from the outside like an FTP or something, could be useful. I don't recommend Resilio because that's what we are using privately and it would just become extremely complicated, plus everyone would have to sync every change as it happens rather than getting it when they want to. If there is anything you could do about this, please let me know. And since a few of you have asked for the LPC library, here is that one, through dropbox this time since that's where I have it at the current moment. https://www.dropbox.com/s/ibgk7r2m9drly … es.7z?dl=1

Re: Gaging interest in the public electronic game library

the problem with resilio is the fact that it uses bittorrent protocol, which ISPs in the US are cracking down on for legal reasons. you may remember a fiew months ago when I posted a Public service announcement on this very forum erging people to avoid torrents due to the risk of a blanket ban from internet access. Currently I am looking for sounds from the older tiger electronics (pre brain warp), I already found the music from the tiger duke nukem handheld. I've also asked arcade USA if he could possibly record the sounds from his family guy handheld pinball machine. the mattel sounds were taken from a program called LedHead by peter hurshburg, and the merlin sounds are from a simulator by shain monroe. finding those programs was a bitch and a half. I don't have the money to invest in any more handheld games to record beyond the ones in the archive and my 2004 merlin. if I still had my acti mates, I'd add them to the lpc library, since they all use the lpc codec, using a later revision of Ti's chipset.btw, can anyone recommend me a free FTP server to hoast the archive?

Re: Gaging interest in the public electronic game library

Hmmm I actually think we should have 2 things.1.  an active ftp upload or something like that for the library or just as we are doing it and an update of the library.I'd say a resilio sync key, for active contributors but then it gets harder and I am not going to be online all day since this is a family connection and I really don't want to bog it down with resilio, pluss while its unlimited with all the streaming devices in the house I know resilio uses bandwidth like crazy. But keep these links coming also every so often the main library should be updated with newer material would actually be good if the library was active on a server or something, you downloaded the library but would have a way to update it with a program or something.

Re: Gaging interest in the public electronic game library

Hi to all, Thanks for all the interest, I'm glad there are people who actually enjoy this library for what it is. Americandad2005, I'll check the sounds you posted when I have a stable internet connection. About the games like Milton and Bird brain, I guess we could put them in? one of our members has a bird brain already, although he hasn't recorded it yet. We tried looking for a test mode, and interestingly we found a way to make it play a beep, but not much else. After you pressed any button, the beep would stop, and it would simply say good bye. Also, a while back I made a recording of Milton using Mame, but haven't gotten around to trimming it yet, but what I do have that I thought people wouldn't be as interested in, is another library add on, basically, called LPC, containing the Texas Instruments Speak and spell and Speak and math, as well as a few other things. I took about two months last year to make that, and if I could help with giving that out to anyone who is interested, I'd be glad to do so. I just thought this is so different from electronic games that I didn't want to include it immediately. Also, the bopit referenced in post 30 is called the Bratz bopit from 2004. We have a recording of that ready to be trimmed as well, no worries, we just haven't gotten around to doing it yet. Thanks for letting me knoe about it again, I totally forgot it existed since it's so similar to the clear bopit from 2002 that I now happen to own. Looks the same, too, apparently, from what I'Ve been told, so if you're blind you can't tel the difference unless you play it. Thanks again for the links being put up, I'll check how it's going in a few hours once I am able to download a large amount of files.

Thanks @29, that's interesting. I've certainly never seen an original unit of the Phrase Madness game, but you've got me curious now.

I think you missed one of the bopits. I had one back in about 2005 that was just the basic bop, pull, and twist, the voice was different, but the rest of the sounds including music were the same, and it also didn't actually say scores either, did the drum thing from the original. Here's a video of that bopit. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PGOGijRrWhM

@turtlepower17, bird brain was also by tiger, and the inspiration for phrase madness is more likely Milten, a similar game released by milten braddly (appropriately enough) in 1981. it is now working in mame. it holds the destinction of being the first (or at least one of the first) with speech, so there's deffinatly some historical interest.

I'd be interested in the link. my email is blindgame...@gmail.com. I'll send it over to jake gross so he could hoast, but I'll also put it on my own google drive, dropbox, and possibly get my own ftp server set up for hoasting it if anyone's interested. also, an update: the handheld remakes site is down, which is where I was going to source the 1978 merlin sounds. as a result all 1978 specific merlin sounds will have to be from mame if I'm going to record them, assuming they aren't already in the archive. as for the 2004 version, I will source those from my own unit. also, I'll see if madrigal would mind you guys including his game and watch sounds.

Re: Gaging interest in the public electronic game library

Ok, thanks, that makes sense. The two games I was thinking about specifically that I wanted to focus on, both because they're two of my favorites and because they're available to me now and I know for a fact that they work, are matching games. Both have speech, which is what I assume you mean when you say you want games with more than just tones. Anyway, one of them is Tiger Electronics henry, and the other is called Bird Brain. I don't remember which company made that one, but I would think that's where the inspiration for Phrase madness came from, at least in part. In any case, they both have sounds or phrases which you need to match in order to win. The offer is always open should you guys decide you want those as submissions, since, as I said, both are ready to go and I should be able to get decent-sounding recordings of them. As for the others, I'm glad there wouldn't be a rush to find them, because I have no clue exactly where they all are at this point.

Re: Gaging interest in the public electronic game library

Hi turtlepower17, The recordings we have made for the library have been recorded over the last three or four years, and specifically this year we have already recorded many more things that are still left untrimmed. I would like to at least start on some of those, especially updating the mechanics folder, before taking on outside submissions, but there is a chance we'll get to the point where we could accept them. The problem is that the games you describe all would fall into the misc category, and of course if they don't have any special, one of a kind sample, I mean if it just has square wave beeps and stuff, I would think about trying something else. The only reason we have recorded some games with square waves in the beginning is because it was part of the Simon category, but now I would hesitate in doing it. If it uses actual wave files and is interesting, I would love to know more about these, sooner or later. In fact, we specifically had a trimmed version of Tiger's Who wants to be a Milionaire tabletop, but I decided not to include it because for one, the samples are terrible quality and for two, it really isn't an electronic game in our sense of the term. In general terms it is, but it just doesn't fit into what I would like to call electronic games. I hope that makes sense.

Re: Gaging interest in the public electronic game library

This is a great start so far! I can think of a couple of games that I have which are not included. I don't know if you guys are still taking submissions, or whether I can find these test modes you talk about, but I'm willing to help if i can. I have a lot of other games in storage too, but those are mostly game show type things (Wheel of Fortune, let's Make a Deal, You Don't Know Jack, etc.) as well as a couple of other well-known games like electronic versions of Uno, Yahtzee, and Monopoly. I would imagine something like Uno is probably in the public domain, whereas the branded stuff is definitely a lot more questionable, and not what you guys are looking for. I also don't know how many of those games actually still work, I haven't seen them in at least 10 or 12 years.

Re: Gaging interest in the public electronic game library

Here's a funny story I would like to share with you guys, just a little thing behind the scenes. So some games don't have sound test modes, meaning to get all the sounds we have to actually play the game and get them to trigger. Such was the case with the Hyper Dash extreme. It took me about a week of playing level 3 over and over with six players to finally get this recording. Just goes to show how long we have to persiveer for one single sample. https://www.dropbox.com/s/7lngebz9qp8it … s.mp3?dl=1

Also, I forgot to mention that the readme file, I just noticed after posting, is still a little bit messed up in places, I'll fix it when the next update comes out. For now, it's sufficient enough.
