Re: Need email advice

The first thing that comes to mind is Pop Peeper. I haven't personally used it, but I've heard good things about it from an accessibility standpoint, and when you said you wanted notifications, that was what made me think that it would be a good option to try. From what I understand, it sits in the system tray and notifies you when new mails arrive.

Re: Need email advice

With nvda at least the Windows 10 mail client works fine. It does give notifications as mail comes in which helps, thenagain I don't know how it'd handle that much email as I tend to delete as I go so my inbox is never that full. thenagain, it's not an ideal program as it's a bit of a pest to move email around and work on draughts, likewise  is still the odd bug where it doesn't read words as you type, though reading lines and actual emails is okay. it's not the worlds' best client, but I much prefer it to the extra clutter and shenanigans with the over complex outlook, albeit I need to find a better client. I still miss outlook express.

@Dark the thing is that it doesn't work for me, at all. It's not an issue of do I need to work around this, use object nav here, OCR there, nope, its just that it doesn't work, at all. I've tried it several times with no success.

For being notified of new emails I use GMail Notifier. It's not fully accessible, but the screen for setting up your GMail account is.http://www.gmailnotifier.com/

Re: Need email advice

I'm more looking for a full client. Notifications would be nice, but not really required. I don't need features like calendar, news groups, chat, etc. If they're there, and can be avoided or gotten around, fine, but mainly I would like alternatives to thunderbird if there are any that work reasonably well. I'd also like to take universal apps off the table, as I don't use them, don't like them, and don't care to mess with them much Thundrebird uses toast notifications when mails come in, its more like a check every 15 minutes type of thing, but that's OK.Basically, is anyone using a mail client that they're happy with on PC, that does what they need it to do, is reasonably accessible, and makes it easier to keep their mail in check?

Re: Need email advice

Hmmm, odd there ironcross, If your using Nvda I'm a little confused.  why you say windows 10 mail isn't working, I've used it on three different machines. Maybe it's the windows 10 ap essentials addon I am not sure, though in fairness windows 10 mail isn't the worlds' best client and I was only using it until I'd investigated alternatives as there are many things in it such as contacts management or navigating long lists of mails that are a miner pain.I was thinking about thunderbird, but now I'm not sure.

Re: Need email advice

no, I don't use that addon as I don't use those features of windows, so I have no need of it. Though, it does do a lot of work to make those universal apps accessible, I just don't like them.

Re: Need email advice

I'm personally using Thunderbird, and have no problem with it. Do you have thousands of Emails in a single folder? If so, that might slow it down, and you should consider organizing your mail into folders.Keep in mind that Thunderbird does use a standard .mbox file format for storing mail, which should be able to be imported into other clients. However, other clients may use their own proprietary/undocumented formats which may make it difficult to get your mail out again. One example is dear old Outlook Express, which stores Email in .dbx files. However, there are programs to convert those to a readable format.

it doesn't just slow it down, it crashes it. It will hang until it either crashes, or until I need to kill it manually.

Re: Need email advice

Hmmm. That doesn't happen here, and I have a load of addresses with thousands of emails in each account. Also, ironcross32, you will deffinetly want that addon. Even if you don't use UWP apps, it is quite helpful.

Re: Need email advice

The addon is generally useful for stuff around windows 10 even if you have removed most of the native aps.Myself I never stored emails in the mail client if I could help it so outlook express file format never bothered me, though having to export contacts as a plane text file did, particularly since windows 10's default contact manager is rather dire. It was only intended as a stopgap measure anyway.

Re: Need email advice

@turtlepower17Thank you for that tip about Pop Peeper, have some karma.I had been using GMail Notifier which is mostly accessible, some areas require that I switch to JAWS' touch curser to navigate.Pop Peeper seems to be fully accessible and does one thing GMail Notifier didn't do which is a big plus to me and that is that the system tray icon caption tells you how many new emails are waiting for you. GMail Notifier's icon just said the program's name, you had to open it, switch to the touch curser, then browse to the table with the number of new emails, a lot of work only to find you have no new emails.Although I don't need the features of the Pro version, in fact I didn't install any of the pro features, I will probably buy it just to show my support for such a nice and accessible program.

Re: Need email advice

Cool, I'm glad it works for you. I'm a Thunderbird user myself, but in my travels around a bunch of different email lists where such topics are often discussed, I try to remember a thing or two. I'm not sure why Thunderbird would crash, unless you've got a lot of emails, and it really would have to be a ton, because there was a time when I had over 1, and the worst that happened was that it operated a little slower than usual. It was more of a headache trying to sort through all that crap than it was to use the client itself, I'll say that much.
