@nsoft15 long time no see XD.Anyways, if it comes to linux, i personally allmost allways use mate and gnome.Have used unity, but as far as i know from sighted people its just bload.I made a manjaro talking images with a text based architect installer, so i can hand you that if you want, but you need to have atleast a little knowledge how to enable speech dispatcher with systemd and manually install orca, as the architect installer wil not doo that for you.A little offtop, but time flies so fast. Are you 18 now?Last time i remember talking with you you was 14.

Re: Some questions about linux

@15To change the panel that Ubuntu Mate uses, open the MATE Tweak tool, arrow down Twice, tab till you find the combo box that lists all of the different panel desktop layouts ya can choose from, then space on it. Netbook is among those. After choosing the layout you want from the dropdown, hit space on your choice, then press OKay to save the changes when the dialog for confirming pops up. Finally, hit Alt-C to close the dialog. For most distros (if not all of them), you can technically change the desktop to your liking.@EveryoneAs for the LXDE desktop (besides using it with ADRIANE Knoppix and possibly Debian), I have never used it with any other distro. My favorite lightweight desktop, is XFCE. Now that, has a nice interface!I've installed it using Ubuntu proper and Debian, though I have not tried it with any other distro.

Re: Some questions about linux

LXDE is probably a better option given your netbooks low memory. LXDE is fully accessible, excluding the panel widgets (calendar and such) which Orca tends to get stuck on. I use LXDE on my Arch Linux box (which is this computer -- which also has Windows) and when running nothing super intensive I can get by with under 500 MB of RAM. You can start Orca in LXDE by hitting alt+f2 and just typing orca and pressing enter. You also do *not* need to install Debian; Ubuntu should have LXDE and it should work flawlessly.

@11 Among the Mate Tweak Tool or Appearance Settings (I forget which area at the moment), you can change the theme to a Netbook style theme. Alternatively, your best way of getting either LXDE/LXQT or XFCE  up and running with Orca speech, is downloading Debian (where the above link takes you to the Debian Accessibility wiki page for installation of the operating system.Alternatively, check out the Slint Distrobution (which also has accessibility out of the box.) Re: Some questions about linux

Hi there,@8: which installation step do you mean?I have installed Ubuntu 20 just few days ago, and it was completely accessible, no sighted assistance required. There was just one problematic step, with the gnome setup, appearing right after installation, I guess that's what you're writing about. The first screen, with options for logging in to various services such as Google, Microsoft, etc. is quite messed, or at least Orca sees it that way.But after clicking on one of options, it somehow snaps out of it, and everything is just fine, it is not just possible to skip logging in, but also select one of the services, if you want them.I did the clicking part using Nvda's ocr, but random clicking should do the job as well, because there isn't really much other to click on than that dialog. Although even if someone missed this solution, I think missing it isn't actually that bad. Infact, the only things this set up did was offering logging in to those cloud services, what I don't want, then it offered some updating tool if I remember right, which required an account, so I didn't want that either and offered some theme setup.Best regardsRastislav

Re: Some questions about linux

I would second ubuntu mate.Anything which is mate is accessible.I would recommend mint for being quite accessible.Note I haven't got all of these working but the following desktops should work. With the exception of kde which is not accessible and gnome3 which has a lot of inaccessible stuff in it the following things should work.Mate is the best but xfce lxde and lxqt are supposed to work.Gnome shell, gnome2 classic which is old and unity.A small warning about ubuntu though. There is an iinaccessible installation post step which will need sighted help to get through after that it may just work.Another note.If people want to doodle gnom3 is mostly accessible, but the settings app aint and maybe other stuff won't work.Potentially accessible is ciniman but I never got that started though when I used it with a distro that had it it seemed to have accessability support. For the beginner, mate is easy to install and use, its just like windows, except it has an xp like menu and a windows 7 style search box and menu as well as run etc.
