@87that can't happen. Anything putting off enough electromagnetic radiation to make that possible will take out your wi-fi and also pacemakers just for starters.@90The range is effectively a few inches.  The idea is that you eventually just buy a desk and you plug the desk in and then everything on the desk can charge, but we're not there yet.  But in 10 years, maybe you go to the restaurant and all the tables have power and there's no more cords in your suitcase because the hotel just has magic wireless desks, who knows.

They should just make Bluetooth charging. Just have a Bluetooth docking station, and when you hook up your phone to the dock via Bluetooth, your phone starts charging.

Re: Why isn't talkback improved, or as good as voiceover

I don't understand, my a50s is just fine here though, not sure what you are up to that could cause that much over heating and battery consumtion. my phone could stay around 1 day and a half through normal usage. make sure it's user error first, not the phone itself. having brightness at like 100 percent, 30 running background apps, performence heavy mode, yes, defenatly not the phone's fault. just go with gaming phone if you would like to push that much. agree about the design though, I hate plastic, but I like how smooth the back is. you could also grab a glass case if you want to make it feels like holding an iphone, lol.

Re: Why isn't talkback improved, or as good as voiceover

If you ask me, in the speaker department my mom's s10 plus beats my XR to hell and back, having proper bass at louder volumes and it just doesn't do that screeking or what ever you wanna call it an iPhone does when you turn it up to high. Also, I had midranges before that were great, but now they really seem to go down hil, plastic construction, trash speaker, stupid touch that works if it wants to, overheating and more.Talking about the a series from Samsung that became from a great solution untill the 2019 variants that felt and looked promising and now they disapoint like nothing else.I don't know about other midrange androids since I didn't have anything else, except my Motorola that for 100 dollars can beat my Samsung, except Storage ways and spek ways, but it feels soo much snapier for some reason, well it is easy to find it, the stupid Exinos processor.Even the j4 plus had a Snapdragon, a cheap one, but still could do it's work with no battery drain and no stupid overheating. It was a slow device, but that is the way it was intended, it wasn't advertised as a great phone to begin with.

Re: Why isn't talkback improved, or as good as voiceover

Hi everyone.I Agree with peoples Idea about the poor quality of android phones. Personally, this is the only thing that made me change my choice for the next phone I'm going to buy. Most android phones in the mid-range price are trash;  overheating, lag, sluggish touch screens, stupid speakers, the list goes on. As for flagships, I've used most of samsungs "s" series up to S10, and had experience working with some other high-end devices here and there; non of them felt as snappy  as an IPhone to me. I've never owned an IPhone before and my experience with IOS isn't that much, But I've heard about It's limitations and Still I'm gonna try it out. I know I went off topic, but what I want to say is that not all the sluggishness of android phones is because of talkback, sometimes it's the phone itself. Commentary helps make it somewhat better, but not many people know about it and It's a third party app, meaning that fewer people have the chance to use it. Now If huawei,  xiaomi or any other Chinese manufacturer could offer CSR pre-installed, it'd be something else.an other thing I don't like in most android phones is their speakers, I haven't been able to find an android phone with decent audio quality yet, the best I've heard was a high-end phone from "LG" and still it wasn't as good as an Iphone 8, or anything higher than that. I might be wrong in this, so I appreciate any other Ideas.

iOS just has better synthesizers.  But frankly if I had Android I'd start by installing Espeak or Eloquence on it in a hurry, so I'd not say that sounding robotic is necessarily a disadvantage, and third party voices are available at any rate.

The thing I can't understand is why talkback is robotic, where as voiceover sounds more natural, why is this? Also, which phones would be best for android? I tried my girlfriend's, and it constantly crashes on me and I try the shortcut to activate it, and there are times where it makes a sound like talkback is on, but nothing happens. It would be annoying if talkback crashes and I can't turn it back on in an emergency.

Re: Why isn't talkback improved, or as good as voiceover

I do love the freedom that comes from moving stuff on an android. I remember bagk on ios I had to do a search for an accessible file transfer program, find another one for my pc, link them both to the same network, make sure everything was going into a folder I could find, transfer everything over and hope that the connection doesn't time out. On my current phone, I just plug it into my pc and drag and drop stuff both ways with no restrictions. As often as ivtransfer data around, android is just tons more convenient for me.

Re: Why isn't talkback improved, or as good as voiceover

@60 to be honnest, realibility depends on the phone. When I had my previous android phones, I could count on them all the time comparred to previous iPhones, if I had an important call to do at the end of the day, I would do it on my android since I surely had some battery left, comparred to the iPhones where I most likely had to charge them up in the noon or best case in the evening.I could always be sure I had reception on my Samsungs, no matter which where on my iPhones I didn't and some more stuff I won't continue with since I might make everyone that loves apple jump down my troath. But in the recent days, I can say I counted more on my XR than on my Galaxy a50, just because this phone is pure trash. The battery sucks, the phone heats up all the time, well, 250 apps have to say something about that comparred to my 40 or so on the iPhone, it can get slow when ever it feels like and more than that, it just feels like it could break in my hands because the construction is so poor.If I had a better android, I would count more on it than on my iPhone since they always served me well, but I guess it depends on what we choose because of our budget.I will always have both of these worlds now since it is hard to drop one or the other, but with a decent android phone I know that would always be my main.

bright guide? the one that you have to pay to send voice messeges? lols. the official telegram app on android has problem too though, not gonna lie, and also I prefer what's app on iphone then on android. still don't see what's the problem of webviews though. I think I could still access web just fine here, in fact I am typing this on my android now. I do agree productivity is better with iphone, but how IOS works really limiting the experience.

Re: Why isn't talkback improved, or as good as voiceover

Of course. And on iOS we have that... Bright Guide... thing. And I seriously hope TalkBack gets a rotor type thing. No freaking menus! That really slows me down, when swiping down or up is essentially a menu and I don't have to then find the menu on screen, find an option and double tap, or swipe left or right and then double tap, hoping focus is moved to the menu and touching the screen doesn't unfocus it. It's a productivity thing for me.

Re: Why isn't talkback improved, or as good as voiceover

You know, it's because they let the developer of Emacspeak, who has drank his own coolade for too long and doesn't see anything wrong with just using a keyboard or track pad and a bunch of "eyes free" apps, then angle gestures to get around the Accessibility API's and is way too programmer-ish to see that it's crap, handle TalkBack for too long. Then you had Victor and his folks bumble through Android 5 through 10, and now they're getting to the real stuff, the actual changes needed to make things good. So while iOS 14 adds actual AI to VoiceOver to allow it to try its best to understand inaccessible apps, TalkBack is now, supposedly, getting the ability for users to configure multi-finger gestures. I don't think Google have gotten as far as "oh let's define a good set of gestures from the start," yet, but they're doing the best they can guys, I mean it's Google and these underdog developers are doing the best they can and we should all feel so sorry for them and just use Android because it's good enough and if you don't agree you're an Apple employee or something!Look, I care about accessibility from its roots. i care about the correct implementation of things. And TalkBack pausing speech to wait for an angle gesture, and the fact that we've had these limitations on Android, Android itself, not just TalkBack, for Android, shows that Android is simply going to be behind, for a long time, in actual, correct accessibility. I don't care that you can access apps. yeah. Even Ubuntu Touch can do that with whatever it works with, and some one could probably hook up ESpeak to some touch events and make a pseudo screen reader, but that wouldn't be tue accessibility would it? The same thing, to a much lesser extend, could be said about TalkBack and Android's API's. Yes TalkBack allows you to read the screen. Yes, Android Accessibility even has a thing where non-native controls, like QT, or SDL2, or whatever can be made accessible by defining stuff. That's according to [This PPSSPP issue](https://github.com/hrydgard/ppsspp/issues/11696), so maybe that's an advantage. But the screen reader's interaction model determines how productive I can be on a phone. That's what users see when they use the screen reader. And for TalkBack, it's really much slower than with VoiceOver. Could it be better in Android 12, when they have the multi-finger gestures by default? Sure. And maybe that'll fix a lot of the issues we have with TalkBack. But then you have the web view issues talked about plentiffully on the Anatad email list. And people are just like, numb to it. Like they feel like Android is their only option or something. It's really sad. And I'm not saying iOS, or VoiceOver, is perfect. I'm not an Apple fanboy, I just agree with their approaches in mobile accessibility. I'm typing this post on a Windows computer, and I've not touched my MacBook pro in weeks. And do y'all know how much easier it'd be to have an Android phone right now? To get texts, calls, and notifications on my PC? Shoot yeah! I'd love to love Android, as I've said *countless* times on here and elsewhere. But because of my commitment to actual accessibility with a *strong* foundation, I will not choose an Android phone until Google takes it seriously throughout Android.

Probably wouldn't bank on Harmony OS being accessible beyond providing the open source talkback, if it is even Android-based. Pure OS on the Libre M5 won't be seeing any accessibility untily build touch support into Orca, which, owing to Orca's progress or lack thereof, isn't happening any time soon. IOS and Android it is, for the time being.

Still, it seems that customers aren’t entirely satisfied with these products, and they have already started to sign a petition to stop the company from shipping flagships with different processors in different markets. The reason for this is that some users believe that Samsung devices with Exynoschipsets are “inferior” to the Snapdragon-powered phones. Re: Why isn't talkback improved, or as good as voiceover

Just curious, does anyone still use SHine plus as their daily driver?I've installed it on my android 6 tablet and I can say that it works well, I kinda missed it, even that I still prefer CSR.Also, yeah, talk back is bad and it makes your phone a snail if you don't have stock, but VA or CSR are good alternatives to VO, VA not so much anymore since it is going away, but CSR can even beat it in lots of things, in my opinion.Thinking about it, CSR is made in a way that you can actually experience the way a phone was meant to work since it doesn't delay it on purpose, so if you try an android with CSR you know how snappy, or not it is.

Even in late 2018 or so it was signiicantly better than Talkback in 2014 or so. IMO, Google did a much better job with making TB a usable screenreader, as apposed to something that just made me say fuck it and depend on my eyes and memory

Re: Why isn't talkback improved, or as good as voiceover

People think Android is less accessible because let's face it. If you aren't tech savvy, 15 minutes on IOS is a lot easier to get into and a lot more pleasant than 15 minutes on an Android device. The fact that Android devices generally have more sensative screens and actually require more precision is a negative to some who see the controls as clunky or not too solid. But spend enough time with both, and you quickly come to realize that they are both equally as good, they simply require a different approach. Right out of the box IOS is set up more accessibly, where Android requires some tweeking to get it the way you like it. It's 2020, people. We aren't back in the early days when Android lagged behind. Even in 2017, the distance was much smaller than some people made it out to be.

Meatbag,Talkback does, in fact, lag far behind commentary, intentionally so. Basically, when you perform a gesture with talkback, it gives you about 150 ms or so of lag to account for the angular gestures, which, btw, is actually rather unnecessary for people like me who are quick with our fingers. Shine + has a similar thing, the difference being that you can disable it.Oh and, btw, you clearly know next to nothing about TTS if you think that that argument made even a little bit of logical sense.

@17Everyone tries to give Google a pass on this, but their rate of progress is literally 10 times slower than it should be, and we still have really bad dumpster fires like Google Docs, that are almost universally hated.Just because someone is advancing doesn't mean they care.  There is a minimum that you have to do.  Google does that minimum.  Mind you, these days, Apple also seems to have decided to do the minimum as well, being as Voiceover is going slowly downhill, sure, but that doesn't invalidate the point about Google.

no, csr is not faster than talkback, it gives you the empretion it is because it do not silents the speech when you start a gestuir but instead it overwrites the current speech with the new speech when it comes, talkback silents the speech as soon as you start a gestuir so you think that csr is almost instentanioce, and no, csr is not the NVDA of android, we said that to shine+ and... it dont have keybord shortcuts

Re: Why isn't talkback improved, or as good as voiceover

Uh, no. No they're really not.Commentary is way faster. Commentary allows customisation of pretty much everything, even without premium, with a few exceptions such as TTS voices. CSR allows you to create your own sound themes. CSR can be used along side, say, SBK or some other braille keyboard, without having to be disabled or suspended first. CSR has a far, far more advanced rotor, with far more options. Apparently, the premium version of CSR also has multi finger gestures, though I've certainly not found them. With the premium version you have OCR, the ability to have commentary use a separate TTS engine than the system default, and also have a secondary TTS engine for notifications, and probably a lot more I'm forgetting. So no, even if you use the free version of CSR, it still has a lot of advantages over talkback.I'd say the screenreader landscape now is almost identical to that of windows. CSR is, in my eyes, very much the rising NVDA of the android world. It has a long way to go, sure, but it's getting there.. And it has a lot of potential. As for google not caring about accessibility? Yeah no. In the past year alone we've gotten integrated braille screen input and multi finger gestures, with, apparently, a lot more on the way. Google just have a lot of other priorities, much like microsoft.Oh, and please, don't play the drinking game with how many times I said CSR in this post. Lol.

Re: Why isn't talkback improved, or as good as voiceover

Well? Let's clear up a few things. The first touch screen software, was Mobile Speak Pocket from Code Factory, sometime around 2003. Among that time there was also the PacMate from Freedomscientific. As of Android 11, Voice Assistant (formally called Galaxy Talkback in its early days) from Samsung will be replaced by Google's own Talkback (because of said new Multi-Finger Gestures.) Search around in Samsung's OneUI 3.0 changelog if you're curious.Need I forget, Mobile Accessibility from Code Factory? Nah, not the original one from 2001 (which was a basic screen reader for Nokia phones), but the one from 2011 on Android devices. Many AT podcasts are still around as archives from back in the day... The Code Factory podcast is still here for example, thanks to Apple Music for keeping it up since its last episode from long ago.

Re: Why isn't talkback improved, or as good as voiceover

@7There is no blind market.  Our preferences in phones make zero difference to anyone from the perspective of money.  What there is is a "we need to meet legal regulations" market.  Those people don't care if we like it, they only care if it meets the regulations, and after that the primary consideration is cost.  Google has gone exactly as far as they have to to satisfy those people across all of their projects, and now doesn't need to really try to improve. This has nothing to do with Voiceover being first and cornering the market.  It's us getting lucky and Apple deciding to put effort in for no reason other than them wanting to.  Nothing less, nothing more, and they could very well stop tomorrow.  Neither Apple nor Google cares if blind people buy their phones.  It just boils down to if whoever is in charge of "this is the thing that doesn't make us money, how much resources should it get" likes us, and whether or not they got lucky and got people who cared/have talent/get it on the right team.

Re: Why isn't talkback improved, or as good as voiceover

It comes down to three things; maturity, popularity and attitude. VoiceOver was first out the gate on a touch screen phone, so they cornered the blind market from an early period in time. They therefore have had more time to improve and add features as well. They, being iOS, have also garnered more feedback  as a result of having more users and more apps are created with the blind in mind on the platform. The big thing though is attitude. You get the feeling that Google created Talkback as a response rather than a need, and it shows in its design and implimentation. It's not treated as importantly as the other features of the operating system, and to me feels like something separate. On iOS, VoiceOver feels less of an afterthought and more of something considered while development takes place...although that has decreased in the last two versions of iOS in my view. With Talkback, it feels as if it's just there and they don't really care much about it. I would add that I use both Android and iOS, so I feel I have no biased view.

Re: Why isn't talkback improved, or as good as voiceover

Yeah, its really not as simple as that. I'm not using tb right now because typing is a pain with it, but samsung's voice assistance woeks great. However i think samsung's tts is not as great and it has crashed on me once this year, so i use google's tts, which is crisp, clear and reliable.I think the ptoblem with global acccessibulity is that one OS update has the potential to break everything, and there is no third party solution to use as a workaround. For example, iOS 14 came out and then i saw a bunch of whining from kids on dice world on how it vroke the game for them. When the recent release of android made typing clunky with talkback, i switched to voice assistant. Had to learn a new system, but the problem was solved, and i still switch between the 2 depending on my needs. Unfortunately, you cannot get that kind of experience from a 15 minute hands on session, so i hope you find this perspective helpful.

Re: Why isn't talkback improved, or as good as voiceover

Google doesn't make all Android devices, so the experience is going to be a little different depending on the maker and how good the device is. I can tell you that if you use Google's TTS instead of the default one that comes on Samsung devices and use a good device, then they are equal. Talkback is better at some things, Voice Over better at some others. Try the experience on a Pixel for the most one to one comparison, since Google controls the hardware and operating system in that case.
