Re: a strange issue with my C drive

Thanks for the suggestion of listening to the hard drive. I didnt hear any unusual noises though, but one of the fans does occasionally make a sort of quiet rattling noise. Its been doing that for months. Other than that, I can barely hear the hard drive doing anything. As you may remember, I ran the Windows error checking tool earlier yesterday, and from my understanding, that tool is just a frontend for the command line chkdsk. Anyway, I checked the fix file system errors box, but I unchecked the attempt recovery of bad sectors box. And this didnt seem to do anything. Well, after that I went to a concert, and I was totally exhausted when I got home, so I decided to run the Windows error checking tool again, with both boxes checked. Then I went to bed. When I woke up, the PC had been restarted normally and I was able to use it, which surprised me a bit because Ive ran it on externals and its taken over 30 hours in some cases. Immediately the lag
s and everything else Id been starting to resign myself to were gone! I havent had a single hiccup yet. So I assume that some sectors were bad. I dont know how to look at logs to find out what was fixed, or confirm my suspicion that there were indeed bad sectors.I guess thats indicative of hard drive failure but it could also just be an unlucky coincidence that happens as a hard drive ages? Im not sure... In any case, I dont think the fact that I suspect bad sectors on this drive is ever a good thing.

Re: a strange issue with my C drive

Most hard drives now have a feature in them called the SMART system. I dont remember off the top of my head what it stands for, but basically it allows you to see if the hard drive is failing or not. One accessible program that can read SMART data is Disk checkup. That should give you an idea whether you should worry or not. If you have bad sectors, then the problem is just going to get exponentially worse, growing from 4kb to 8, 16, 32, 64 and so on.

Re: a strange issue with my C drive

if your hd is getting old and has never been reformated, that could be your problem. Thats happened to me whare id have this computer and it was insainly slow, litterily in skype calls it would stutter and almost die, and a reformat fixxed everything. If you can back up your most important files a reformat isnt actually the worst thing in the world. I find in the long run it can be seriously worth it. Unless its your media player thats not liking that section of your hd or that section is very slightly corrupt kinda like a scratched cd. Cause youd think, if the media player was having a hard time sorting threw things on that hd, then it would really give your CPU a workout cause it had to try seeing if it could play it. Just a thought but if explorers working fine with it thats strange. But your hd is probly just gonna start getting in your way, id at least recommend backing everything up, cause if its doing this, y
ou never know, next you could have a harddrive failure.

Re: a strange issue with my C drive

Well, one thing I forgot to mention was that because of a mysterious driver conflict that kept me from using the PC unless it was in safe mode, I actually did reformat this thing less than a year ago. I also noticed that small files such as midi and text files do have a noticeable lag when loading from the C drive vs. an external. I dont get it.I just ran disc check on the drive and told it to fix file system errors, and the issue still persists. I didnt scan for bad sectors yet because that is the part which takes ages. Im still hoping its a simple thing gone wrong that can be easily fixed, but Im really losing patience. I wish there was some definitive way to tell if the hard drive was really failing. If I knew it was, it would put me more at ease.Im now backing up my most important data, and resuming my efforts to get a more powerful PC. I have some money saved up I could put towards it, and summer break is soon coming so I can in
vest more time into it. In any case, Im still going to try to make this thing more tolerable to use for a little while until I get a new machine.

Re: a strange issue with my C drive

hmm, seems like maybe the drive has developed either bad blocks or is suffering from a mechanical problem where it is not easily reading the contents of the stored media. Put your ear up to the side of the case, if it helps, take the side off and listen to the drive run. Does it sound normal? or are there loud clicking sounds coming from it. A pattern to listen for is the drive spinning up and making a loud click and spinning down. I have had two Western Digital drives develop this, the first one became unusable the second one still works but it is very slow and I dont trust it so I dont use it anymore. Just as a precaution, back up all the things you need or dont want to lose, as if its a mechanical issue, there is really nothing to be done about it.

Re: a strange issue with my C drive

Is your drive making a faint high-pitched whistling noise while in operation? Thats a definite telltale of a failing hard drive.
