I myself am not as big of a fan of Nintendo's products persay so while they do have some rather unique systems for those that care for them, I myself could pass.   the 3ds is not a bad hand held nore is the 2ds but I rather pull for accessibility for main systems that have a interface persay and system more so to a computer stand point.   even so, computers rate higher then any of the game systems out there in terms of games atleast for us.   we have more freedom persay.   for game systems we do as long as we wana be hooked to a tv. for portables such as 3ds etc, there would be only so far u could get before it became rather well, boring.     but it would be interesting for those who are on that Nintendo level.   myself, im some what like the other poster.   i'd like to see what becomes of xbox 1 when windows 10 goes to it or is perhaps maybe pushed out to it.   that may work better caus
e then we may could do more perhaps.   like the computets.   maybe is the key word.

Even if you're requesting, posting on this forum is not going to make it go anywhere... and Sony has hardly implemented a screenreader, just a small tts feature for party chats and messages, though it's a good starting point. Hardly a case of JAWS Vs. NVDA, since you can't pick and choose screenreaders on a console... if you want to start anything of the sort, you should either email nintendo, drop them a tweet or start a patition...

Well, appearently Nintendo is already on the right track. in one of their most recent games, "tamadochi life", the mii's thoughts are read out loud. this was the hardest thing to program and what prevented it's prequel, tamadochi for the original ds, from even being released outside japan.

The problem is anyone with any actual influence over the developement of  nintendo's consoles is  buried 200 feet down in a  concrete bunker under a mountain in Japan, or at least they might as well be for all the  practical notice they take of anyone's opinions. Even when, in 2007 I managed to get through  to the central office of nintendo Uk (which took  quite some arts of persuasion on my part), and even though all I was suggesting was a simple click menu feature for the wii, there was no way that even within the same company the major development section could be  accessed at all. So, short of breaking into that sealed bunker with a reinforced tank and lots of explosives, I doubt any access requests to nintendo will be heard at all.  Besides, as has already been said,  the ps4 is not! getting a screen reader, it's getting a basic tts chat feature. This will just read chat messages between players
on the playstation network, it will not parse on screen game text, indeed from the information I've seen on the feature I'm not even certain it is available within the actual game software to pass text to the tts that doesn't come from the in game chat, and of course don't forget that  these days games are far more than just text, there's a huge 3D graphics and movement thing which would take some creative audio design to become accessible (certainly not impossible, but far more work than the fat cats would be willing to put in without an incentive. Failing some sort of change in the law, I don't myself see Nintendo, sony or even Microsoft's game development division particularly including access, sinse the almighty prophet margin just isn't there, and that is the only reason these companies do anything.I've heard several times over the last ten years how this company or that major software house is "intereste
d" in accessibility, or is "going to implement" such and such in their next project, and bugger all has ever come of it because at the bottom line, it just doesn't sell.Myself I still see access as the province of the independent developers. The smaller companies who don't just go with whatever their marketing monkies tell them will most appeal to a certain demographic but are actually willing to put some reason, love and creativity into what they're doing, and either experiment with audio output for it's undoubted virtues (like the producers of audio dramas), or would be willing to make necessary access changes to their game for the extra audience which would, on the scale of sales that independent games have make a difference to them, or just be willing to add access because they want as many people as possible to appreciate what they have put their time and creativity into, (just with a dark room).. So, access on the 3Ds or ps4? I
personally doubt it. But more fun an interesting stuff for Ios and android? most certainly!

Re: request to nintendo: accessibility addon for 3ds

The fact that Sony is willing to do this at all is a big step in the right direction, as has already been said. I don't particularly find the need for too much extra audio in certain games, since all you have to do is be aware of what sounds already exist and what they mean, and while some audio would be good for informational purposes, I play most games just as well, in some cases, better than my sighted peers. Having said that I agree about the profit being the reason companies do anything, but if sony is willing to hold an event as a method of raising funds and awareness for disabled gamers, and if they've implemented all the accessibility features in the latest update like elarging text, button assignments for the gamers who may have motor challenges, and this small tts feature for chat messages, along with all the voice commands, accessibility is still higher than it has ever been on consoles before, and Microsoft pushing the xbox 1 to a windows 10 base will certain
ly make things interesting as well.

which I did. I was researching (bop be boop boop boop) the original game, and it specificly stated it was not released in ammerica because of difficulty in localizing the in game tts engine, which was rectified with tamidochi life. it also mentioned there is a fan translation but it only translated the text and not the tts.

Well text enlargement an control config are both relatively easy options to add from a programming perspective, quite different from a full tts, particularly one that actually covers in game text, I'm also as I've sai before not convinced that just because it is possible to learn in game sound effects  and basic press button menu structures for beatemups this constitutes equal access (not that people shouldn't try it, just be aware your still missing most info a sighted player gets and having to put in more effort than a sighted player would to attain a similar level of skill). plus, beatemups only make up a small percentage of all the games available.

Re: request to nintendo: accessibility addon for 3ds

I wouldn't hold my breath on that happening, dark. lol But as for only learning basic press button gameplay for beat em ups, maybe hack n slashes... but fighting games certainly can be learnable on a much deeper level, not just merely pressing buttons. but I agree with you that it still means we have to work harder and access is not 100% the same. I don't think it's equal access, but I'm content with what it is right now... as it could be much worse, and given that, we can learn a whole lot more than most sighted people think we can, and for the moment, I'm content with it since I don't see anything major happening soon, and your list of desired features is more or less the same as mine.

Hello,I would love the 3ds to just have fermware tts support of sorts for the built in apps, and for updates. The games, well as we've already discussed in other topics, those will be a lot harder, I think main interfaces are what we should be focusing on right now, and am glad that some others here have the right idea. Nice one. HOweer, I think we will ahve to start some sort of petition to get anywhere, and even that's not gartneed to work, as Dark said, the different divisions are almost like different companies.
