Re: trying to decide if mechanical keyboards are right for me

Hi everyone,So, I went out and bought a new keyboard. I got the Corsair Gaming K70 RGB MK.2 Rapidfire keyboard.  I've been typing on it now for about 20 minutes, so this post is sort of my initial thoughts with it. This could well change a lot over time.I do like this keyboard because it's quiet, which was something that was important to me. I also like it because it's light, in fact it's almost too light to type on. The keys don't travel as far as the Razer keys do which was something I wanted.I kinda wish I had gotten a more tactile switch, but they don't seem to have much in the way of tactile switches for these sorts of keyboards yet. I'm not exactly sure what I'll think of this keyboard in 2 or 3 years time, but it's a bit of a learning curve to get used to typing on this thing. While typing is ridiculously responsive, you do have to watch out for hitting false keys. The keys don't take much force to press down, and it doesn't take very much press for a character to be typed. The keys are also closer together than they were on the Razer. Again, this was something I was kinda wanting to try out, but it takes more getting used to than I expected. To sum up: On paper, this is pretty much exactly what I believed I wanted. but in practice, it will be a bit of a learning curve to get used to. Of course, I haven't been using this thing for long enough to really adjust to it.Also I think I'm going through a phase right now where I am overly analytical and picky about keyboard feel. I was this way to an extent when I first got my Razer, but now I'm even worse because I kinda wanted to try something which is a complete opposite, believing that I would like it better. I kinda wish I hadn't been introduced to this side of my pickiness with computer keyboards. I am already impossibly picky about other things, to a point where I know I will never be satisfied, and I wish I wasn't that way with computer keyboards now, especially since I don't yet feel like I know these keyboards well enough to justify my pickiness. Ah well, I might as well enjoy the ride.

hi.low profile key's are a good idea.they are  less smaller, and not that loud.you can get some good one's with the cherry red'sand if you want a little tactile bump, get a low profile keybored, with the cherry broun'sbut, really low profile keybord's are a much more viable option.and they have much less travvle time.you can get some pritty good one's that have blue tooth, so no more cables.hope that help's

Re: trying to decide if mechanical keyboards are right for me

Hey guys.So this morning, I did some more research and found something interesting. On a Wikipedia article describing different kinds of keyboards, I essentially read that laptop keyboards are of the scissor switch type which has less travel, similar to low profile keyboards. That low profile term, and its comparison to a laptop scissor switch, was like an aha moment. So there are other people like me who prefer something slimmer with less travel. And Come to think of it, the keyboards I used regularly from 2012 to the time I got my mechanical at the end of 2016 were all low travel, and before that, I wasn't typing as much as I am now, plus I was a kid/teenager who didn't think much about keyboards. I do remember typing on bigger keyboards sometimes and, subconsciously anyway, being glad I had something smaller at home. My Razer is definitely big, as are a lot of the desktop keyboards I have seen from other people, so I kinda wish I had made the connection that I didn't like bigger keyboards as much. Ah well, live and learn. Like I said, it does help for some gaming tasks.Apparently low profile is a pretty recent thing for mechanicals, and I really don't know what it would feel like. I have found some full size low profile mechanicals though, which use cherry reds. I've never typed on those switches, in fact the only switches I've typed on are the Razer ones. The Cherry reds seem to be as opposite from my Razer as it is possible to get. That might be a good or bad thing, I'll wait until I see one. At some point I'll go back to Best Buy and check out more keyboards. They seem relatively quiet, which is something I am looking for.I'd still like to keep all my options open, so don't think I am just totally ignoring all the advice I get! I'm just so glad I found a track that definitely makes me feel like I'm onto something. For a while I really did wonder if I was crazy.

Hi.Well they are much better for gaming. However you can get some one's that ant  that clicky. So this is how the key caps work. The most loud and clickyness  you will get is the cherry m x blue'sThen you will get the Broun’s that have a slight click and tactile bump. After that you can get the green's that feel more like a mem brain key board, with a little bump.If you want to get a key board for speed, get a key bored with the cherry mx speedsThe key's where made so that you won’t have to press the key so hard. Now, me my self I use a raiser black widow, which has cherry mx blue'sHowever I found out that some people in my class did not like the loud sound, so I got a new key board, where the keys would be fully changeable.I installed the cherry mx Broun’s, and they are much less clicky. But are still good for typing Now, currently I am at school, so I am using my laptop's key board, left my main key bored back at home.

If you can access one of your nearest stores, I recommend testing them by yourself. You can buy what you liked there of course, but taking the memo of the model will also help you since you can search for the cheapest online store.Oh, by the way, mechanical keyboards are awesome. That's all. lol

Re: trying to decide if mechanical keyboards are right for me

Thanks guys for the responses!Yeah, I am probably making a bigger deal of the noise than most people would. I have nothing against hearing it in recordings from other people, especially if you can hear other stuff in their background too. But I've put a decent amount of effort and money into a good mic and cleaning up my own recordings, and I don't like hearing the keyboard in everything. I've got everything sounding pretty much how I like except for that. Can anyone relate to feeling like the keys travel too much for typing? When I listen to quieter switches on Youtube, I can hear how much the keys move and it just doesn't sound like something I'd like typing on. That's another reason I went for clicky switches; the clicks gave me the illusion of low travel amount. Back then I didn't have a solid idea that I liked low travel much for typing, but I think subconsciously I knew it. I feel like I'm kinda odd though.

Re: trying to decide if mechanical keyboards are right for me

The only time its been a problem is in conference environments so I'd keep a cheap unit about for those. However, one thing that got me switching to a mechanical was gaming.Gaming on a membrane never felt right for me, I didn't have the liquid feel of the board expecially when mashing it.It sounds like an arcade and while you don't need to bash the keys it takes a bit of effort to get to press the keys in the way you should to get the best performance out of them.I used to game on laptop boards.I went through 3 laptop keyboards so tried going on normal board, and I just didn't get the feel. One thing I have noticed without using my laptop board, the unit doesn't get as hot, in fact my older system used to crash in the summer. Now I use a board that I don't need to use the internal then it works.Another thing is while at home I can use it anywhere in the house.People that see my setup with the cooling desk fan and the board says it looks all kinds of cool with its fancy lighting and the like.

Re: trying to decide if mechanical keyboards are right for me

When I did game walkthroughs for my podcast, I don't recall anyone complaining about my keyboard noise being distracting. I believe that the first few I did, I was using my old keyboard which had blue switches, so they were definitely clickier than this one. I actually agree that I don't like blue or other clicky switches as much as I thought I would, because they are loud, and I was worried I was annoying people around me with them. If you're going to get a new mechanical, get yourself brown switches, they're a lot quieter and, in my opinion, feel just as nice to type with as blue switches. I can't speak from personal experience on other types, since I haven't tried them, but I can assure you that, when it comes to game recordings, nobody's going to focus on something like that unless you draw attention to it.

Re: trying to decide if mechanical keyboards are right for me

I personally love clicky switches,   even for recordings, but if you don’t,  my friend had the same issues as  you, and he got a membrane mechanical. So it’s not loud, but it’s still nice and clicky. It’s the razor ornata chroma. I tried it, and I even liked it.  It is made out of plastic, so you can’t abuse it too much, but it does come with a really nice leather rist rests, and there’s pretty much no lag. They go for about $100 at target.
