On SC, I spend most of my time asteroid hauling and not doing much space combat, I do do ground combat though, and I have nearly 900 total points! So you don't really need to combat much unless you want better upgrades for your ships and better ships.

And, if you type lockmode, the targeting works on a direction based thing, its far easier to hit because you can use w a s d f and r as alternative keys for directions. However, I suck at trying to pilot and track and shoot all at the same time. I prefer to gun because its too hard to keep track and move in range when your piloting.

@Exodus, I understand that the focus command in promethius is a bit of a cheat, I've certainly got nothing against actually aiming in space and calculating vectors, indeed part of what irritates me is that should! make combat fun, not annoying, it's just the length of time it takes to speak the prompts. I've mailed their donations address. My concern with in game support is often it goes to immortals rather than designers in these situations and this is an issue that needs discussion with designers, particularly sinse I have heard people mention admins ignored this in game before. I will confess this aspect of star conquest did somewhat disappoint me.

problem with prometheus's aiming system was you aimed at a ship name. This is a bit like pressing the auto lock on button in a main stream game. Press that auto aim button fast enough, often enough and you'll never miss. In the case of prometheus, it was lock x-lor. everyone did it, noone used coordinate based aiming. If anyone with the name x-loritan in their ship name happened to enter the sector before a wave of invading ships? lock x-lor matched to that player's ship and everyone's gunning went down the pan. So while the targeting seems cool, it's really just promoting lasyness. Also, correct me if I'm wrong but both sc and miriani had active blind players before sound packs were a thing

Rats hurt even the most seasoned of players.  Read the help file as to why.  If you've got a problem with it, talk to the hosts about it, but not even the sighted players care about it so I don't know what to tell you about that.

Dark, I emailed the AG email list in answer to your question, but I'll paste my email here for those that also have this same question.  If any of you guys need the pack, I'll be glad to give it to you.  One thing that I do want to mention that has been brought up in this thread is the staff's hatred of sound packs.  They don't hate them, they've told us this multiple times.  What they don't like is illegal scripts/triggers that break policies.  They had this problem beforeand they don't want it to happen again.  That's why we're working on updating the current vip pack.  We've already taken out the illegal things, and are working to update the triggers.  What is there will do just fine for most things.  It's mainly exploration things we need to update.  Once it's done, we'll submit it to the staff for their approval.  What this means is that they'll check it over, and make sure that nothing is in there that breaks their policies.  They're just being careful, that's all.Hey dark, I'm glad you asked here, and now that I know it was you, I can help.  Do you have a pack for SC?  Their is one for VIP, and once we're done updating the one for VIP, I'm going to port it to mushclient.  The reason I couldn't say this to you on newbie, is because the staff don't like players talking about packs on the game.  Once our pack is approved by the staff, we can though.  If you need the pack for vip, I can drop you a link. Now for your questions. I'm guessing that you didn't have the pack, so combat was a ton harder for you.  With the pack, you'll see the following: tracking   In SC, their are two ways to lock on to an enemy.  Coords and vectors.  My guess is that you had coords selected as your preferred aiming method.  I use vector aiming. W is north, A is west, D is east, and so on. To change this method, type lockmode.For aiming up and down, I do aim -s, or +s. Remember that sine S is at the center of WASD, it tells the game to aim either directly up, or down.  You can change this with aim +w, aim -x, and so on. Let me know if this helps, and if you need the pack.  Hope you decide to give the game another try with this information. Mike.

The train command does not work in SC. Instead, you have to find a sim. I don't remember, but there might be one somewhere around the pilot's lounge. Once you enter the pilot's lounge, try exploring the place. As for the ground mission, genually speaking, they end by you blowing up a target. In a next, that means blow up the thing that makes the rats that comes out of that nest. As for the beginners missions that is on a plannent, it means blowing up a transmitter tower or something else depending if you are just doing target practice or cleaning the outsiders from a given area. In either case, it means typing return once you are done. As for credits, it takes awhile to get enough, but when you do, you should try doing some tesla mining. Trust me, that helps with bringing in the credits. It doesn't bring it in as fast as other muds, but it can help. With the right sound pack, and with the right things removed from your screen, you can solo beacons and the
  like. That does require some practice, and that is sort of putting it lightly. Let's see, what else to tell. Oh yes, you can use a work bench. This is one of those areas that could use some work. Anyway, the crafting system does allow you to create some vary usefull things if you have the right points, toolkit, and blueprints. Speaking of crafting and the like, you might want to go over to drydock. There might be a man to talk to. Just a hint mind you. Also, astaroid hauling can help too, but I would weight awhile before starting in on that. I would also suggest you get a phone as soon as you can get one that best fit your char. For that, I would weight until you have of 1000 credits. If you can weight until this point, you can get any phone design you like, but they kill you on the bill. Until then, use the pay phone, if you can find one, when you wish to call up someone within the mud. This is one area that I see different than other space based muds. HTH.

Yes, they use a lot of similar commands and systems. Star Conquest was the original sci-fi/space MOO. A couple of ears after it closed in 2005, Miriani opened. Then several other lesser MOOs opened, all based on Miriani and Star Conquest.

Hi Dark.Personally I'm a huge fan of prometheus even though I haven't played in a while. The community is so nice and helpful and it's easy to get started. I tried both miriani and star conquest a long time ago and couldn't figure either of them out. It wasn't until later that I realized a lot of the space muds use a lot of the same commands. I think that's why it was so easy to learn prometheus.Other than prometheus though space muds aren't really my thing I like the traditional fantasy mud like alter aeon. Their a little easier to understand.As far as simulators I'd guess most space muds have them to teach you how to do things. Go to a starting place like a docking platform and type train or training this should give you a list of things to practice. This might not work on star conquest but it works on prometheus and like I said they use similar commands so give it a try.Hth.

First of all, get a soundpack, and don't tell the hosts about it. As long as you are not doing anything thing that calls into play any scripts or micros, they really do not need to know about it. The bad there is that you will have to ask on this form for a soundpack. LOL. I could dig around to see if I still have one laying about. The next things to not do any combat at first. You will need to build up your credits so that you can recover from any losses. Get to know your alliance. Have a few drinks with them. Maybe have them take you up. Aim followed by the direction is a must when shooting. 8 is north, 6 is east, 2 is south, 4 is west, + is up, and - is down. If you think shooot is hard, just think about all the challedges of repairing. Basicly, they want you to work as a team. If a ship requires a crew of eight, it really requires a crew of eight. one to fly and track, six to aim and shoot, and one to keep things repaired, and to make sure the right power is going to the 
 right weapons. This is one gaime that I highly suggest you to read the background history on to get into the theam. In short, if you are good with RP behind the keyboard, you will do fine. This mud and Prometheus are two different muds with to different focuses. I am not to sure how best to give you the help you need.

Hi,Without a soundpack of some kind, it's going to be quite hard to keep up with things, though I won't say impossible. I used to play a lot on Star Conquest, and near the end, I was good enough that I could do very high beacon drops in a marauder, and I did well in battlesuit missions as well. I piloted my own cruiser in battles, and I almost had enough points for the top Fringe battlesuit. So it definitely is doable, but there is a bit of a steep learning curve involved.

Well I tried promethius recently but found the activities and theme of the game a bit too disperate and random so decided I wanted to try a mud with more of a consistant universe. With all the issues people have had with miriani I decided to try star conquest, I know about the profile thing which I should be able to fix at some point, though it does seem overkill (particularly given the chatter on the alliance channel which wasn't overly in character at all). anyway, so I start. I do the tutorial and talk to the officer about the newby missions, so there I am with a cargo hauler, a battle suit and some points. I then made mistake number one, I logged off in space, bye bye cargo hauler. I had just about enough credits to buy a flitter which I did, though I did try a combat suit mission and got my suit blown up which was entirely my fault for not using a repair drone when I should've done (though I would be interested to know how to track when a mission 
 is complete, and also if there is a lesss spammy damage display). I then buy a flitter (which I can just about afford but it's left me broke), and decide to try shooting rats. Okay, however the combatt display is super spammy, especially for just knowing the coordinates of your target sinse you have to sit through "the computer says automated rats starship is at cooridnates bla bla bla" by which time the bloody thing has probably moved, besides tracking seems amazingly inefficient, frequently I'd be getting shot and no idea where I was getting shot from which was loopy. I also couldn't shoot up sinse when I typed aim + I was told to specify a direction ont he z access, for goodness sake!So I return to old earth with a ship almost too damaged to fly and no money to repair it with and a massive bill for my suit. First, how the hell do I do combat in this game? and no, I do not know about triggers and aliases and scripts and all that
  jaz, I just want to play the dam game! Second what the hell now? I've arsed things up properly and apart from debris salvage it seems there isn't much I can do, even if I get my profile aproved. Frankly the game is pissing me off a lot rather sinse it seems major mistakes are reaaly! punished.
