Re: for raspberry pi users, what do you do with them?

I have 2, actually. One is a 3 model b, and the other is the original model b. The original is sitting in my tech bag, waiting for the next time I need a quick portable linux server. The 3 only runs my home automation system, (with homeassistant) though it used to do a lot more.I'll probably install a mySQL server as well as my game server when it's finished for local testing. As for the things it used to do, a nas, bit torrent client, occasional team talk server, running my web site, automatically collecting music and streaming it via icecast (with liquidsoap), a mySQL database (for various things), and more. Most of that is managed by my VPS now, so the pi's load is considerably lighter. They're great little devices to have around, especially for someone like me who usually has a project to try.

Re: for raspberry pi users, what do you do with them?

Hi there.Yeah for my first Raspberry, I plan to do the little NAS solution.Good to know that OMV has an SSH connection method available, so this means I don't need to install aditional scrreen reader software?Do you actually remember the login data on first start up? or wait, let me see if google knows that.editHmm ok, seams easy enough with SSH and so on, found the login infos, so, let's roll I guess.Greetings Moritz.

Re: for raspberry pi users, what do you do with them?

Hi,so, that's what i'm currently doing with my several Raspberry Pi models.1. Providing a cheap and easy to set up solution to easily access data centralized in a network from every device possible. It's mainly a NAS, but a very simple one, since it should only be able to store data on an external 3.5 HDD and play it back via SMB and UPNP/DLNA to enable the TV to watch series directly over WiFi. I'm running OpenMediaVault (OMV) for this purpose. It's not the best accessible distro out there, but the interface can be navigated well enough to configure it so it works without any more configuration. It can be accessed via SSH which enables you to do almost everything else directly.2. A TV Server which centralizes several USB TV Connectors (Sattelite and cable), including HD TV support, and manages recording all my favourite series/films directly from TV and storing them until I want to process them even further. It allows me to watch TV ove
r WiFi and over the internet from several locations, not even from my home PC. I'm using the OpenELEC distribution here with a DVBLink Server set-up on top. This setup only requires some configuration on start and runs and runs and runs forever without any problem.3. Package-building for Raspberry-based packages. A simple Minibian distribution with all build-essentials and more installed which I use to compile and distribute several raspberry-based linux packages. I'm using Minibian here because I don't need any graphical interface, and since Raspbian is rather big compared to the 150 MB Minibian which only assembles a SSH interface and some minimal tools, it's totally fine and there probably aren't alot distributions which are smaller or more performant.Best Regards.Hijacker

Re: for raspberry pi users, what do you do with them?

Hi.Urm yeah, that's actually the problem, Raspberryvi has some info, but the problem is that almost nothing gets explained really, they just give you their compiled distro and yeah, that's that. The mailing list doesn't seam to be active either anymore.Greetings Moritz.

Re: for raspberry pi users, what do you do with them?

A stereotypical answer, but ... use google search!like: "raspbian what ever you want to do"There should be some instructions in raspberryvi.org which tell you how to setup speech.

Re: for raspberry pi users, what do you do with them?

Hi.Ok, I suppose I can't enable speach right out of the box and I need to use SSH to manipulate the pi.I heard of a distro called OVM which is made to creat nas systems, but if rasbian works best, I'll take that, I need to get into linux anyway. What software do you use to set up a nas? I hope you don't mind me asking that much, I am still learning all that stuff.Greetings Moritz.

I use Raspbian. It is also possible to use Arch, but the former is easier for the Linux newcomers.

Re: for raspberry pi users, what do you do with them?

Any distro will do. Although I'm not absolutely sure, you might need a hard drive with external power supply, because the pi may not be able to power the ones which take the power from usb.

Re: for raspberry pi users, what do you do with them?

Hi.Yeah, a NAS would be one of the things that I'd love to do, for my I T training, we live together in a flat with six people and we wanted to create a NAS with the Raspi and a harddrive attached so that we can access files from the network or on the go and also upload files there. What do you need for that and what distro would be the best one there?Greetings Moritz.

Re: for raspberry pi users, what do you do with them?

The username and password should be somewhere in the release notes. The default should be pi for the user and raspberry for the password. I use mine mainly for the nas, so I can just hook my usb harddrives to it and access it from the network. It also has openvpn installed, so I can access my stuff outside of my home network. Of course you can run a web server with it as well. I also tried to use it as a print server, so I didn't have to connect the printer to my laptop every time I wanted to print something, but it got some problems with the drivers, so I kind of gave up.

Re: for raspberry pi users, what do you do with them?

hi, since I have a bit of linux experience, here is my pi setup: raspberry pi 3b and a tft display for running xorg, a customized version of arch linux arm using bits from my autobuild script, such as more or less the same packages and additional files, etc. I use it more or less as a mobile computer, since it, my USB modem, a webcam for audio and visual input, a portable bluetooth keyboard and a charger for mobile phones that powers the intire array all comfortably fit in a small-ish camera bag. I use mutt for email, vi for note taking, ratpoison for a window manager when I need xorg support, lynx for basic browsing, combined with either firefox or chromium for graphical web browsing, vlc for media playback, libreoffice to convert to word files when needed, cups for print support, fswebcam and tesseract for mobile ocr, although I have to find a way to automatically optimize  the image, and a few other applications. Normally, I use speechd-up, an interface between speakup and
speech-dispatcher, what a pain to set up by the way! In xorg, I use orca and chromevox if I want to use chromium. Even with the keepalive script, which I had to write to fix pulse audio's rather annoying habbit of randomly cutting out sound, in xorg, the system is definately usable, but it's no speed deamon, but hey, for a sub $200 complete mobile device once all the smoke clears, I'm definately happy with it. I also recently got my hands on a pi0w, with a 1 ghz processor, 512MB ram, wireless n and bluetooth 4, which I've turned into the chepest echo device on the plannet.

for raspberry pi users, what do you do with them?

Hi.So, this was sort of a jump into the cold water action I did there, but I ordered a raspberry pi model 3 b, just to see what I can actually do with such a little device. So, it came today and I assembled all the things, like the casing and the heatsinks. I downloaded the full image from raspberry-vi.org because it has native Screen reader support, I managed to mount the image on a SD card and boot up the PI, well, I am now stuck at the login screen because I don't know what login data those guys used. So, I am wondering, because I am quite a curious person and allways willing to try new things, for those who have a raspi, what distro of linux or OS are you using and what do you do with the pi? I don't have a braille display currently, but an SSH connection should be no problem. Thanks in advance.Greetings Moritz.
