The other option is to record the convoluted wav and than play it trough
your SB3 as you normally would.

Possibly, but I have other stero equipment (both digital and analog)
hooked up elswhere and no problems and it doesn't happen when I plug
the power in, but rather when I plug the ethernet cable in and it
connects to slimserver.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Really wierd squeezebox problem

2006-11-11 Thread happy

I have been running 2 squeezeboxes in my house for some time now with
great results. Anyway, two days ago I added a new dac to one of them
and have been having really wierd problems. First I thought my dac
died, then the squeezebox, then I just thought one of the digital
coaxial female connecters or cable was bad. Basically what happens is
optical works fine, but when connected with the coaxial I get pops and
static in both the sqeezebox itself and over the speakers. So finally I
decided to swap squeezeboxes to see if the coaxial out was bad and the
other worked seemed to work perfectly. I listened for about an hour
with great sound then I walked into the other room plugged in the other
squeezebox and immediately heard a distant horrible static again over
the one playing. So, what would cause the optical and coaxial out to
work perfectly, but as soon as a second squeezebox is plugged in the
coxaxial to no longer work? Thanks and sorry for the long post.

Also if it is of consequence, I am using both wired from a router.

It is not that fragile. Nothing to worry about. If there are no sharp
turns,I am told, it will help in the performance too. I wouldn't worry
too much these things. Just a litte care while bending/handling the
cable thats all.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Transporter reviews by owners please

2006-11-11 Thread chriz___

Hi there,

New to this forum and as a new owner of a SlimDevices product I can
only say that for almos $2000 for the Transporter you would it to
deliver and it does.

I have mine hooked up to a Krell KAV-400xi by a pair of expensive
balanced kables. The Krell is then pumping a pair of Von Schweikert
VR-4jr by kabels with active shield.

I really think that the DAC in the Transporter sounds really nice I
know there is a whole bunch of nice DACs out there right. But you have
to choose "one" and what ever the "one" is you will end up with a
possibility to have choosen then "wrong" DAC and the story goes on.

The reason to why I bought the Transporter is that I wanted it to be
hooked up using the balanced option. And I wanted a for the future
machine that can deliver streaming Audiophile quality sound for the
future. There is no doubt that this type of sound streaming and or
movie streaming is the future.

Take Microsoft for example on November 22 2006 they will launch a new
section to XBox Live for the XBox 360 and deliver HD compatible video
and ondemand content. At this point Microsoft could be a competitor to
major broadcasting networks all over the world by utilizing the
Internet as network. Not revolutionary this has been known to happen in
quite some time now but still think about it for a second. Its kinda
huge everyone can now setup a video on demand site or why not a
streaming music site. The only problem still to solve is the user
rights issue and it will be solved its just a matter of time now. But
what ever the box I would always be more comfortable with a special
unit designed just for the music.
The Transporter is that device.

I have tried Pandora.com for a while using the Transporter and it works
like a charm the only "problems" I have run into is when the Transporter
interface doesnt react accordingly when network seem to be failing
slightly. It stalls and the display isnt responding like most network
products or software its a regular issue. And it can be fixed. But the
sound of the machine is really really good. At least in my ears it
sounds great.

Soo the next thing now is to try to get my hands on some FLAC material
that is sampled and saved from an SACD material. To really have the
Transporter working. Will write back my comments on that when it
happens.

Cheers,
Christopher

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: SB is killing the SACD format! ;)

2006-11-11 Thread deadkenny

Have to say that I was considering an SACD player before I got my SB,
but I only have one SACD disc (War of the Worlds) and really can't
justify a player and buying into SACD as a format considering that
doing pure rips and playing Flac via a SB is such an excellent quality
anyway (potentially better than most CD players). I'm really into Flac
audio now.

Also, with HD video players about there are new HD audio formats which
are potentially better than SACD and DVD-A (though I've no idea how
they do compare). If these are supported by HD players (HD-DVD and
BluRay) and *if* (big if) HD players actually take off and one or the
other wins the format war, then everyone will have a HD audio player.

Plus I think I read somewhere that Sony admitted SACD never really took
off (which is no surprise).

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Total BS (Logitech) Sellout

2006-11-11 Thread deadkenny

It is a fact that sometimes company acquisitions occur to either remove
the competition or to grab their customers. It's also a fact that
companies sell to bigger buyers because simply the shareholders stand
to make a nice profit (shareholders can include the employees, so it's
not just greedy directors). That's often why they are in business
anyway, e.g. to build up a company and either make a success of it or
to sell it on. The latter may be the only way to grow sometimes.

However I have respect for Logitech and would hope they are buying the
technology, knowledge and experience to add to their line-up. Though
audio isn't their main field it's clear they're trying to get more
serious in the market. They already have music systems anyway, but the
products SD brings are high end by comparison. Just hope they don't
bundle their speakers with a Squeezebox though... they're not the best
of quality.

They can't be buying it for SlimServer though as they could have used
it without even buying the company. Plus Logitech have their own
server. If there is a Logitech version of the Squeezebox or Transporter
it could be they will support Logitech's server instead (or hopefully as
well as SlimServer).

Have to say Logitech's software isn't too great, at least going by the
mouse/keyboard software.

Personally I'm not bothered whatever happens. I have a SqueezeBox and
love it, and SlimServer is open source, free and likely will remain
available whatever Logitech do.

You know, I can't imagine why Logitech would have bought SD if they
didn't want SD's knowledge of using Open Source for consumer
electronics. I mean, it's not like the Squeezebox hardware is so hard
to figure out. If Logitech simply wanted a network music player,
they'd have built one themselves (which, in fact, they did), or bought
a company like Roku Labs which already has a customer base.

Hi, I use the analogue outputs as at present none of my amps are
blessed with digital inputs. I either drive the Transporter into a
Rotel 1412 or directly into a Beard 100 valve power amp. Both are

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Trasporter display configuration - done much?

2006-11-11 Thread ModelCitizen

Yup, I agree with all of this. And configuration for anything to do with
the display should all be performed from one screen or section (and
possibly sub-screens), including the screensavers. MusicInfo is
definitely the place to start.
I'd like to see a facility to stop any display segment from scrolling
as well.
There is a lot to get into one nice, intuitive and simple config screen
though. :-)
