Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Power supply (technical)

 Hello,

I know very little about electricity, so please forgive my silly
 questions.

I have read that upgrading the power supply benefits the SB's sound.
Now, just for curiosity sake, how can Volts have a sound?
They're not silly, but you've combined two questions into one that's
harder to answer.

Volts may not have a sound, but you want mostly DC volts with little
ripple and good regulation. Pure DC to the Squeezebox won't be the end
of the road however, because there are separate supplies and regulators
inside that have their own specs, likely to have more of an effect on
the overall sound than the external supply.

Would the original power supply sound better if hooked on a computer
 ups battery?

You could try it. Mine is hooked to one now, but I didn't have trouble
with interference before/after. I'll probably just put a surge
protector like before.

Also, aside from the fact that the SB's volume control is not
 recommended for audiophile listening,
Isn't it? The transporter has three internal jumpers to set the output
level, which could be thought of as having an analog volume control
with three settings, e.g. 9,12,and 3 O'clock. Once the gains are
somewhat matched it can then be more safely used as an audiophile
volume control (without going too low on the scale).

Using resistors as voltage dividers or jumpers in Transporter is less
convenient that stepped attenuators, but unless I'm mistaken proves
that the digital volume control is intended for audiophile use.

I personally wouldn't feel comfortable not being able to use 100 on the
Sb for critical listening, if for example that was 'loud loud' with my
fixed attenuator setup and I needed to be a quiet audiophile.

There is a very well done wiki here on connecting to a power amp which
covers any safety issues, but you'll have to search.

Yes, done it all. I have a linear power supply with a super-regulator

supplies.

As a general principle, I agree. But Black Sabbath's first album was
recorded for just 600 quid, so the chances they were using a first
class studio seems unlikely. (Mind you, it does sound good - probably
because they did it so quick and avoided faffing about with loads of
overdubs).

And of course, if HiFi News were using the CD remaster of this album as
their source, then that has been quite heavily compressed. (Album
Replaygain for the remaster is -7.52dB).

Hi

The tact millennium is a powerd dac so we just connect a singelended
digital cable to the dvd players -digital out-.

The transporter when used as an dedikated transporet works wonders when
connected directly to the millennium
sound is so pure.

A guitar really sounds like a guitar and so on .

Before i had 2 lyngdorf tda2200 amps lyngdorf cd-1 and roomperfect
roomcorrection w210 corner subs gamut l3 speakers hydra 8 with all
anaconda vx cables special platforms and vertex aq cabels .

I gladly sold it all and bourgt a tact milennium mk3 had that
completly moddified then a Transporter wich also is moddified and
system audio 99 as tempoary speakers wich basicly is the cheapes worst
speaker system ever made.

What puzzels me is that the sound in my room with that gear sounds
alot better then my former references system ever sounded .
and thats with the cheap speakers stock cabels no roomcorrection no
nothing .wonder will happen when i get the cremonas; )

The Transporter have alot to do with this fantastic sound its so
musical.
I would really had liked to demo the calendras again but this time with
the transporter as sourch.

I think you fell into Tyler's tongue-in-cheek trap.

OTOH either that link was poorly written, or I'm not very good at
comprehension. The hypothetical manufacturing scenario was well thought
out, but I failed to make the connection.

The last paragraph* doesn't seem to fit with the rest, but having read
it a few times I'm not really sure what the intent was...
...
* If members of the audio industry had been seriously interested in
investigating the freezing technique further after Robert Harley's
article, perhaps now, some 10 years later, more people than Peter
Belt would have had to come to the conclusion that the beneficial
effect of freezing has nothing to do with `affecting the audio
signal' - that there is something else `going on'. This realisation
only comes about when one realises that freezing something which
could not, by any stretch of the imagination, be associated with the
audio system and yet one can obtain a similar beneficial effect on
the `sound' !!!
...

I would hope that by 'going on' s/he means psychological expectation,
but who knows?

At least we haven't (yet) suffered May Belt hopping on this forum and

On the stereophile forum she has gone on and on with her obfuscating

 Spare us that here please.

They are some serious loony tunes :-)

I wouldn't mind the Belts coming over here. I might even change my
signature to _promote_ ABX if that happens!

No, I didn't ABX it. And I won't even if you ask me. (Especially not if
you ask me.)

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Transporter review at Audioholics

2007-03-17 Thread Nostromo

Mind you, I tend to think that there should be perveivable differences
between the two.

But I've been reading the Audio Critic lately. For example, they
claim in issue no.24 that all CD players sound the same:

As long as they meet the fairly exacting specifications expected these
days - and most of them do - they will sound the same, regardless of
price. That does not mean, of course that some are not far superior in
measured performance (well below the treshold of audibility) and
 construction quality.

I'm not sure if that's true or not. I admit, I'm somewhat sceptical.
But if their claim is backed by facts, and if the blind tests were
methodologically sound, then the case is closed: all CD players do
sound the same. At this point, I can't help but ask myself: Does the
Transporter sound really different than the Squeezebox?

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Battery for SB3?

2007-03-17 Thread stlblue

Greetings:

Since Vinnie/Red Wine isn't doing battery mods any more, are there any
simple (plug-n-play?) ways to run an SB3 through a battery? I'd like to
play my unit, while listening to headphones, when I'm sitting outside on
the patio.

Thanks,

Ed
