Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Stax Earspeakers
Hi - I have had Stax headphones for at least 20 years, in this time I have had New SR3s, SRX, Lambda Pros and Signatures. Powering these have been SRDx, SRM1 Mk2 SRM-T1s. I have kept the latter two of headphones / Drivers the others going to friends. If I ever want to really listen to the music it is to these headphones I always return to - I have never heard a pair of Stax being bright, they are always just a beautiful sound. I also have Sennheiser HD 650s / 280s Beyer DT880s and some Jecklin Floats (I do seem to collect a lot of these things) - why? - I use them in different systems - I cannot be bothered to move the Stax around (too lazy?). Out of these non-electrostatics I would have to say the the Beyers are probably the best sounding - certainly the most comfortable. The oddest are of course the Jecklin Floats (if you are not familiar with them then imagine the Cybermen from Doctor Who - that is what you look like wearing these headphones - but again a good sound). I have not tried the 2050s - I think I probably have enough now - OH - I forgot about the Etymotics - really useful on the move keeping the world well out of the way. -- AlanE AlanE's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9251 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=36055 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

While the Lavry and Zhaolu beat it in all respects (most notably detail, resolution and placement), the SB3 was no slouch and although the test was brief (and I've been fooled before and it should be mention the SB3 PS was upgraded to linear), it didn't seem an impossible downgrade. To be frank, I suspect I'd be quite happy with the SB3 as a source. Even more so if bang for buck is at all a consideration. I'll likely be ordering a white SB3 before the sale is over, and be able to test further in the future with a better amp. Hi - I initially used my SB3 straight into the my power amp and thought the sound was good (for the price extremely good). After a month or two I used my DPA dac which was an improvement (although now of course I had to insert a preamp), I then also tried the Oritek Modded Zhaolu which I preferred - it was an improvement but not a quantum leap. That came a few days ago when I built the Peter Daniels NOS DAC - as I have posted in DIYAudio this is the first time ANY digital source has begun to sound like my analogue. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Small room, small footprint
Very interesting...I tried it on the bedroom system that has the L and R speakers on a shelf. Adding the C speaker and putting it in the middle tended to collapse the stereo spread, and since I was closer to the C speaker, it seemed louder and had a tendency to overwhelm the other channels a bit. But once I got used to it, it wasn't too bad. This might come in handy if you have a lot of space between the L and R speakers and you need a fill. Things got a lot better as I moved the C speaker around. When I turned it around, pointing backwards into the shelf instead of out into the room, it wasn't as loud and the reflections off the back of the shelf were quite pleasant. Then I put it on the floor under the headboard, and this resulted in the best sound yet. It seems to work better in an ambient or reflective position, rather than pointing straight at the listener. Lots of possibilities there. With 3 channels playing, the already punchy sound of the Aego was even stronger. I have heard the 2.1 system playing quite loudly in a large room, and it doesn't sound wimpy at all. In fact we used the Aegos all week outside at a family reunion on a mountaintop and it sounded great. Using the extra amp and speaker, you could really bathe a large area in quality sound. I have no idea where you'd get an extra sat, though. Maybe direct from Acoustic Energy? Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] In Wall Speakers
You're getting some good advice here, so I'll back out after this ... I agree that Yamaha is at the top end of the mass market stuff. I used a Yamaha RX-V2095 A/V receiver before I got my Parasound stuff for my main music/HT system. My pereption of the Yamaha was that it also suffered from being thin and somewhat shrill, compared to the mid-fi stuff. When I got my SB3 for the HT system, I experimented with all possible connections - Digital out, analog out to the analog inputs and analog out to the 5.1 by-pass inputs. The by-pass inputs only use the preamp of the Parasound pre/pro - the analog inputs route the analog signal back into the digital path, and in effect, does a second DAC conversion. If the DSP modes still work with the analog inputs, thats clear evidence that the analog signal is being reproccessed to digital and back to anaolg again. With the stock SB3, the digital out sounded better than the analog out to the analog inputs. The analog out to the by-pass inputs sounded better than the digital out in most ways, but was a little thin sounding. After full Bolder mods, the analog out to the by-pass inputs is substantially better than the digital output. For you, I would say that if you go with a mass market receiver, use the digital out to avoid double DAC conversion. If you want to use the SB3's DAC, which is likely to be beter than the DAC in the AV receiver, you would need to go the used mid-fi route and use the SB3 analog out to the analog inputs. You may want to check and see if the A/V receivers that you are looking at have the ability to pass analog signals stright thru, w/out re-conversion. That may be via an additional set of 5.1 by-pass inputs, or via a setting that disables the DSP on the analog path. That could be the best of both worlds - The digital output would use the receiver's DAC and it's DSP features, and the analog output would pass the SB3's DAC signal straight to the receiver's analog path, w/out re-processing. That way, you could hook both up and choose the one you like best. I have both hooked up on my Parasound - I like the Bolder modded analog to the Bolder modded digital going to the DAC in the $3,500 pre/pro. But I do sometimes use the digital output to use the various DSP modes, such as 5.1 channel music, or the 5.1 channel party mode, when the music is more for background for a group of people than for critical listening. Hope this helps, Bill -- whdean whdean's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9127 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=36154 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

I actually have an older model yamaha and SB so I could actually try this out. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Benchmark vs. CIAudio VDA-2
It's pretty close to a tie. We decided to write some of this down before running out for another bottle of wine. The VDA-2 is in the lead but we have agreed to listen to both on G's system before we declare any consummate winner. We've run the gambit from Norah Jones to The Cult, Handle to Ozzy. Thumping bass rattle the windows to whisper quiet unplug the refrigerator in the next room. Hands down, with the present system the VDA-2 shines in one area - quiet listening. At low volumes it seems that the DAC1 isn't as synergistic with my little tube amp. Crisp vocals on Stephen Stills Stills Alone (The Ballad Of Hollis Brown) were unobtainable with the Benchmark at low volumes. By low volumes I do not mean the type of listening you do to keep the neighbors happy. I mean the type of listening you do if you'd like to sustain a happy marriage with a sleeping wife at 1am in a medium size apartment. Think whisper. VDA-2: Guitar plucks resonated as if they were live. Stills' guttural and sometimes raspy voice made me want to clear my own throat. DAC1: More muted as if the strings had been dampened, and his voice lacked the throat of realism. After realizing the low volume phenom we listened to all of our picks at quiet levels and found a big gap between the two DACs with the CIAudio coming out ahead. (Thank god someone suggested we listened to the same music on BOTH DAC's - never would have thought of that myself.) The rest is pretty unremarkable. The DAC1 and VDA-2 with PS upgrade sound very close to identical when the SB3 is used as a transport on my low watt system. I'm happy I made my purchase. G insists that we compare on his system and I agree. I'll post more when we do. Right now it's another bottle of red (Gala Rouge, Pinot Noir is a super bargain and goes well with both DACs) and a side of Allison Krauss. My one gripe is the flat/small buttons. The display could also be be higher resolution. -- earthbased earthbased's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=334 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=35881 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
