Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] WiFi or Ethernet?

2007-12-28 Thread sgmlaw

Most folks prefer wireless because it is convenient and cheap to
implement. But no matter what the wireless fans tell you, the headroom
margin is small compared to a good wire pull. And encryption is a
little understood global resource load.

Wired ethernet remains unmatched for its bandwidth overhead and signal
stability. These can become big advantages where traffic and
interference rise. In a congested wireless neighborhood, even G
signals get compromised.

I pulled about half a mile of CAT5e in our present house several years
back, and haven't looked back at wireless (other than for a couple
laptops). We stream multiple video and uncompressed audio feeds - and
a lot of other traffic - all simultaneously, and never have a drop out.
Our multiple SBs never fall below 99% on performance monitoring. I
never worry about network performance issues.

Invest in a good switch and some decent wire, especially if you plan on
multiple computers and devices. The eliminated wireless issues (and
associated hassles in solving them) are well worth the investment.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Transporter gain question

2007-12-28 Thread joeriz

I just received my new Transporter yesterday (woohoo!) and everything is
working fine but I have a question. I was hoping to eliminate the
active preamp from my system so that my system would now consist of
basically the Transporter, my amp, and my speakers. For most music
this seems to be fine. However, for some CDs that may have been
mastered low, I find that the Transporter doesn't have enough gain
(does it even have gain or just attenuation?).

My understanding is that it comes from the factory with the internal
jumpers set to 0 so changing these to compensate doesn't sound like an
option. Are my only options to a) put my preamp back into my system to
achieve suitable gain, or b) live with this for the few CDs that it
affects?

Thanks,
Joe

I have the same situation with my setup.
Although my TP + BK have very nice synergy, sometimes I would like to
crank it up a bit, especially on older recordings that are not as hot
as some of today's efforts.

Therefore I have installed my Bryston pre back into the chain.
The sound is somewhat less organic but my ears (brain) have adjusted.

format and rip precision obviously do make a difference. But the fact
that some folks here prefer certain SB3 FW builds over others tell me
that the FW has some impact on sonics, and the PCM stream coming out of
it may not necessarily be bit perfect in a comprehensive way. There
are a few other elements that look potentially noisy to me, including
dropping a giant VFD assembly right on top of everything.

You have a nice system that reminds me of my own in some respects
(Mullards and TFKs in harmony can yield a terrific result). Try
dropping some jitter reclocking between the SB and your
Electrocompaniet and see if it settles down any. A really good
reclocking instrument can minimize many transport shortcomings.

You may not need a TP, and I doubt the analog output of the TP is in
the same league as that in your DAC. I too run a D-60 cable off my
CEC, and it can make a small difference. But it really becomes
insignificant once I drop a D2D after it. And no, you cannot borrow my
D2D.

Simple (and inexpensive) thing to try is a Monarchy DIP
http://www.monarchyaudio.com/ It's inexpensive and they work. Buy it
from Audio Advisor with a 30 day MBG... The Transporter sounds better
because it has lower jitter.. A Monarchy DIP will lower the jitter,
alot, it will also galvanically isolate the SB3 from the Dac among
other things. Also the newer Stereovox XV2 sounds better than his older
D60 design. But try a DIP I think you'll be very suprised.

Assuming we're talking about the DIP Upsampler (the only thing Audio
Advisor carries), yes you will be very surprised.

I tried a DIP Upsampler only to find out that if the SB3 digital output
drops for any reason (like a glitch in the wireless network), instead of
muting, the DIP outputs digital noise at full volume. In my case it
nearly destroyed my speakers. According to the designer (M Poon), it
was working as designed. Also, it compared poorly sonically to my
Apogee Big Ben as a jitter-reducing device.

Instead, for $100 more, I got a GW Labs DSP Upsampler. This is an
up-scale version of the Monarchy, licensed from and IAFAIK, designed by
Monarchy. I'm very happy with it - it mutes properly and is sonically
competitive with the Big Ben in jitter reduction.

1 - I would (indeed have) go for a music system, and plug the TV/DVD
into it. This means no compromise on music, and IMO such systems are
perfectly good for AV - you just need the ability to go fairly loud,
really. If you watch lots of TV and films, maybe a surround system
could work for you, but do you want all the extra speakers and cabling?
That's why I got rid of mine.

In terms of specific recs, I'm not too familiar with the Oz market.
All my stuff is British, which may get expensive once import duty and
the exchange rate are considered. Given your budget I would be looking
at ebay and secondhand - you'll get a lot more for your money.

2 - you need powered speakers or an amp plus speakers. For a bedroom
the former is smaller and neater; Audio Engines are recommended by some
- try a search on this forum, you'll find loads!

to the same discs played with their SACD side on the Linn.

I have no drop outs when the scarlatti DAC is set to master and the
transporter to slave, everything works perfectly well.

The only issue is that the DAC can only be switched to master when the
transporter is sending the information on the sampling frequency
usually 44.1. But the transporter does this only when he receives a
clock signal. When that happens I have to set the transporter back to
master (internal clock), switch the DAC then to master and after this
 the transporter back to slave.

Since I have connected the transporter to the QNAP directly not linked
through my router (to avoid interferences from the router) I must
disconnect it every time from the router and connect it to the
computer. This is time consuming. The world clock setting should be
possible directly at the transporter and not only through the
 slimserver webinterface.

With such a sophisticated digital frontend, why rely on a slow QNAP? I
have already experienced with 2 NAS's (QNAP and Buffallo) and they all
have been terrible to install, terrible to follow for any customization
and very slow for music scans and pretty much everything else. I got
tired and bought a Mac Mini and installed it as a fully dedicated music
server, and I wish I had done it before, I bought a very small good
looking high resolution lcd monitor that is most of the time turned off
and got the logitech wireless media mouse and a mac bluetooth keybord
and any time I need to change settings, create playlists, revise
labels, etc. I can do it without a problem from my listening chair and
in a snap, unlike with the NAS's and besides a mac mini almost costs
the same as a NAS

The GW Labs DSP uses a different sample rate converter (a Cirrus Logic

dedicated linear power supply with precision components for the ASRC
like the GW Labs, it would work as well. Since it doesn't it sounds
worse.

It's also getting troublesome to keep two copies of my music around -
one in 44.1 for backup/future use and one upsampled offline in Audition
to 48kHz.

The GW Labs DSP gives me the best of all worlds - upsampling to 96kHz
to feed to the TacT, as good sound as the 48kHz files upsampled
offline, and it sounds best with the 44.1 input files so I can get rid
of the duplicate 48kHz files.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Transporter gain question

2007-12-28 Thread Greg Erskine

hi joeriz,

The Transporter's unbalanced RCA output is 2Vrms which seems to me to
be normal for sources like a CD player. The internal adjustemnt will
reduce the output voltage level (unless it was set incorrectly at the
factory).

How did your setup work with a CD player and no preamp?

I would suggest that you have a power amp with relatively low gain
and/or reasonable inefficient speakers. Keep this in mind if you decide
to upgrade and still don't want a preamp.

I usually connect my Transporter directly into my small 55 watt amp and
volume is not a problem. At the moment I have a valve buffer with a gain
 1 and still no problem.

Side note: If you are a DIY type, you could experiment adjusting the
gain of your amp by replacing one or two resistors in the feedback
circuit.

The SB3 has been said to equal most CD players under $1000, and the
Transporter is equal in quality to just about any CD player you can buy
if you believe Sean. (the designer, CEO)

Of course opinions are a dime a dozen, and will vary wildly.

Personally, I would go with a Transporter for these reasons:
* Simplicity, one device does it all.
* Multi-screen, looks great!
* Front panel controls, useful for some

If the Transporter seems too expensive, you could just get a SB3 and no

I own a couple Squeezeboxes (multi-room setup), and a Transporter for

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Yet more on Loudness Wars

David Bendeth, a producer who works with rock bands like Hawthorne
Heights and Paramore, knows that the albums he makes are often played
through tiny computer speakers by fans who are busy surfing the
Internet. So he's not surprised when record labels ask the mastering
engineers who work on his CDs to crank up the sound levels so high that
even the soft parts sound loud.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] transporter or SB question

2007-12-28 Thread GuyDebord

I replaced my Rega Saturn with the Transporter, and before, I also
auditioned the sb3 with a Stello DA220MkII and a Benchmark. The
decision was easy, the transporter was superior, especially in how it
rendered the notes in its pitch black sound floor.

My Saturn wasnt a SACD player, but until know I have yet to hear an
SACD that satisfies me. Of course before buying the Saturn I auditioned
other players including several SACD. Hope this opinion helps you
decide.

A bit on the sensational side, not a whole lot of new things on the
technical side.. completely ignores newer things like replay gain that
can eliminate some of the loudness advantages of over compressed
tracks.

Wow, the Saturn is a $2400 player, but doesn't even do XLR. The Pathos
amp you have looks kinda neat.

The sold wood remote for the amp is amusing :)

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] A little help needed in playing / converting / downsampling Please :-)

2007-12-28 Thread Deaf Cat

Hiya,

Just tried a Linn down load, 24/88, just sounds like hiss through my
SB2, hmmm I'm slightly confused.

I get the impression I need to down sample it(right words?) to 24/48 to
enable my little SB to be able to actualy play the tune.

I have down loaded foolbar2k and had a somewhat long play with it,
changed the output to 24bit and then enabled the resampler PPHS, it
playes through foolbar on my pc speakers :-) Might have guessed I'm
not exactly computer literate :(

The next step would be to get it on the main hifi through the SB, for
this I believe I need the Secret Rabbit (from what I have read), which
now appears in the Active DSP's window.

This is where a little help is needed, how does one get a copy of the
original file but in 24/48, can't see how FB2k outputs another file.
Any pointers as to how to achieve this appreciated.

Many thanks

how does one get a copy of the original file but in 24/48

Select file, right-click, select Convert-Convert To... then choose
FLAC in encoding preset and enable DSP processing with Secret Rabbit
with Output Sample rate set for 48Khz.
