Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Audiophile Deathmatch: Monster Cables vs. A Coat Hanger!

2008-03-23 Thread Anne

I would rather not have a discussion, some people claim there is a
difference, thats good, I respect that, and yes, I admit I do have a
rather well respected digital cable, the late edition of Illuminati
D-60, but anyway.
I will tell my own story.
I started out with electrostatic hybrids in the 80´s, using cheap
electricity wire.
I then moved on with the same brand, Audiostatic fullrange
electrostatics, a Coda 10.5 power amp and Sonic Frontiers SFL-1
Signature preamp, a very repsectable system.
I was in contact with the owner of the Audiostatic factory, and asked
him about recommended speaker wire.
He laughed at me and told me to stop thinking about this as
electrostatics sounded the same with any decent wire.
I went on to buy Tara Labs Reference Gen. 1, a thick solid core that
was very hard to bend. I also bought a roll of cheap Radio Schack wire,
the same as Anti cables use. I bought both cables because it was
mentioned in Stereophile magazine..
I heard no diffence between the two actually.
Now I have Martin Logan Aeon I, but actually use a set of vintage
Carlsson OA50.2 Ortho Acoustic speakers at the moment, and my basic
setup is basic solid core electricity wire, 2,5 mm2 bought dirt cheap
from an electrician store. The conductors look a bit like a coat hanger
yes, except for the color.
I simply fell off the cable wagon, and it doesnt bother me one wee bit,
never think about it.
Dont worry, be happy, and if you owe expensive cables I am sure you
enjoy them just as much as I enjoy mine.

Just a guess, the OP is probably asking about which pin is hot on the
XLR outputs. There is no official standard, altho most boxes use pin 2 hot.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Smart multi room audio

2008-03-23 Thread markwm

What equipment would be needed in order to have the following multiple
room audio setup with the following criteria:

1. Each room has independent volume
2. Each room can play the same source at the same time
3. Each room can play a different source at the same time

1 is easy with volume controls, 2 is easy too with a multi channel amp
or speaker switch but how can you do both 2 and 3?

If you had a multi zone amp or mutiple stereo amps and multiple
squeezebox's you could do 3 but Is there a better way?

Multiple SqueezeBoxen or Receivers is the way to do your #3. and of
course the others as well.

Once the Receiver is available stand alone, I can't think of anything
that does all three.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Smart multi room audio

2008-03-23 Thread markwm

What about suitable amps? if you have 4 rooms, that's 4 squeezeboxes.
Would need an amp capable of driving 4 sets of speakers at the same
time playing different sources.

The downside to this setup I see is that if you have 4 SBs playing the
same music, you're using 4 x bandwidth

Actually, I'd use powered speakers. I'm doing that in my library quite
well.

The downside to this setup I see is that if you have 4 SBs playing the
 same music, you're using 4 x bandwidth

Assuming you are using compressed files and a decent wireless setup, it
is four times the bandwidth, but its well within what a 11g setup can
do. I would not try this with 11b. And if bandwidth is a worry, you can
drag CAT6. Its easier and more reliable than dragging two speaker cables.

I generally don't think of whole house audio as being of concern to
audiophiles. I have one audiophile main system (Transporter, etc.) and
secondary systems for more casual listening.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Smart multi room audio

2008-03-23 Thread SuperQ

You can easily do the 4x squeezebox/receiver with FLAC over G wifi. As
long as the SqueezeCenter is on wired ethernet.

I agree with pfarrell, squeezeboxes and powered speakers are a great
way to go for each room.

If you're looking for an in-wall setup, and want to use a small stack
of SqueezeBox receivers in a closet, you would need either an 8 channel
amp, or a small stack of 2 channel amps. (or some combination of amps)
A normal 2 channel amp with distribution splitter wouldn't work.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Where is the Phase at the Transporters Connector?

2008-03-23 Thread Wombat

Don´t know exactly how this is defined electricaly but once i read how
to connect units in Phase. I measure the Voltage between ground of the
rca plugs to earth. The unit must be stand alone and not attached to
others.
Correspondending to the direction of the power plug this voltage
changes. The direction resulting in lower voltage i use on my
equipment.
On the Transporter this is when the current carrying lead is attached
to the inner pin showing to the mid of the Transporters back.
I think this is what he calls Phase

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Smart multi room audio

2008-03-23 Thread mgraves

This is essentially what I'm doing. I using a number of SB3s (5 in
total, have 3 presently) each with a pair of powered monitors.

I'm playing with various powered monitors at the moment. At present I
have :
- Alesis M-520s
- Behringer B2031As
- M-Audio BX5a's
- KRK Rokit 5s (borrowed)

I'm also considering a pair of Wharfedale Diamond Pro 8.2 Actives. I'm
just buying a bunch of gear with the intention of listening to it for a
while. That which I don't like I'll resell on E-bay.

I did this with IP phones over the past couple of years. I tried about
20 models before settling on the three that I use daily.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] audioengine a5 or amp/speaker for same $$$?

2008-03-23 Thread mgraves

The AudioEngine stuff is very good, both good gear and good value. There
are a lot of powered monitors in the $400 range, although these
primarily target professional music recording applications.

I bought a pair of Alesis M1-520's for $199 last December. These are
nice little monitors. See www.alesis.com for details. I just recent
found a source for these refurbished for $149/pr.

The finish is less pretty than the AE gear, and the inputs are 1/4 3
conductor ro XLR. So you'll need an adapter cable to go from RCA to
1/4

something like the Russound CAV/CAM will get you all 3 of your
requirements. I've got a couple of the Russound RNet pieces in the
basement and feed them with tuner/XM radio/SB3/Roku M1000/Cable box
1/Cable box 2 and distribute any of the 6 sources to any/all locations
(10 currently, 2 unused rooms available). Sonance and a few other
companies provide multi-room/multi-source systems as well. I chose the
Russound stuff as it interfaces well with home automation systems.

It's a common psycho-acoustic phenomenon that distortion DOES make the
audio sound louder. What you're seeing on a CD waveform is
'controlled' clipping, where the level is maximized as much as possible
yet held at a maximum level of -0.2dBFS. The digital signal isn't
clipping, but the processing in the mastering process is 'controlled
soft-clipping' for the volume.

Go to http://www.digido.com/bob-katz/index.php for a selection of great
articles by Bob Katz, one of the Country's best mastering engineers...
LOTS of loudness info.
