That's exactly the reason why i went to the Transporter!

I own BW Speakers, Accuphase Amp, and Accuphase CD. As you might not
know these componets (accus) are in the sound and priceregion the
MCIntoshs are. (I'm from Germany, and so we don't have too much
MCIntosh)

The reason I went to the Transporter was the userbility, including the
phantastic display.

So if I want to hear realy audiophil, I take the digital out from my
Transporter to the digital in (DAC) in my Accuphase DP 500. But to be
honest, I'm not always able to hear a great difference, so I think the
transporter is also very good - and together with the above mentioned
usibility (linn offers nothing!) for me it's the Transporter.

carrera

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Apple Lossless a compromise?

2008-11-04 Thread jeanchris

Hi all,

I'm using a SB Duet that use my ALAC iTunes library located on a Mac
Mini (used as both server mediacenter) running Leopard latest
iTunes + Quicktime releases.
I use my Duet with an external DAC (embedded in my CAIRN FOG3 CD
Player) and not using the analog RCA outputs.

I just try to test the differences of ALAC - WAV and ALAC - FLAC by
recording the SPDIF output of the SB Receiver (using a Stereovox HDXV
digital cable). Here are the results (all tests with SC 7.2.1
firmwares up to date) :

1/ Comparison on the Mac Mini : ALAC file versus WAV file (the WAV is
from an EAC RIP on a PC is my reference. This WAV was imported in
iTunes as ALAC)
Result : no difference
2/ 1st comparison using the SB Receiver : ALAC - WAV
Result : no difference
3/ 2nd comparison using the SB Receiver : ALAC - FLAC
Result : no difference

Conclusion : Transitively, there is no difference between the original
ripped CD track the hardware decoded FLAC on the SB Receive side !

I think it is a placebo effect to ear a difference between WAV, FLAC or
ALAC for a same track at least using the SPDIF output. Perharps the SB
(for my hardware : SB Receiver, it can not be the same for a SB3 or a
Transporter) incorporated Digital to Analog conversion permit to ear a
difference but using an all Digital signal an external high grade DAC
there is none.

Both threads talk about the A2. The only person to own a pair of A5s
was far more inconclusive, his opinion being

Compared to the A5s, it comes down to the room size and how much
separation is available in the listening position and how far away one
is from the listening position. In a small to medium room with a close
listening position, the Boom beats the A5s fairly easily. Add a
sub-woofer in a medium to large room and the Boom will give the A5s a
 good run for the money.

The key there is close listening position, and in the inlukely case
you want to hold your head 2 feet in front of the Boom for extended
 listening sessions.

I also would say that the message above was written with some
overenthusiasm around the launch of the Boom, which also saw threads in
this very forum stating the Boom was audiophile - in which case the A5
can make easily the same claim.

I love the 2 Booms I own, but one -which I unfairly located in a medium
sized room, our homegym- benefitted from hooking up a subwoofer (and I
am not fan of bass, the subwoofer's volume dial is turned to 1 on a
10-scale) - but there is no way I would have ever considerd the Boom an
alternative when I had to move away to an apartment for 1 year and *had*
to put together a good system, because I can not live without good
music. An SB3 with a pair of A5s kep me company for that year and
allowed me to truly thoroughly enjoy my music collection far away from
home. It never failed to impress people that lstened to it and allowed
them to fully immerse themselves in music. It is true the A5s are a tad
boomy with the bass if one does not position them right, but a little
too much is always better than decidedly too little, which would the
the Booms problem for any serious listening when it comes to bass. As
the poster that wrote the one and only comparison with A5s in the 2
 threads you provided stated:

.. I think it comes down to better sound for less total dollars ..

Or let us hear another A5 opinion from a satisfied owner:

.. I paid 170 EURO for the set. And at that price I think that it
would be, at least difficult, to find a match (active or passive w.
amp). Sound quality wise I'd recommend them for all kinds of background
music. .. So in the end I'm keeping mine based on a combination of
price, planned usage, sound quality. ..

 Oh, that was you in
 http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=35170

You even went as far as providing a commercial link to a pair of A5s as
 a tip in the past:
 http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=34810

Hm. Obviously something sored you on Audioengines. I find your analysis
of the past balanced, by the way - but what you have written in this
thread shows that you are indeed irrationally negatively biased for
whatever reason. Your personal history with whatever brand is your
 right, I guess.

Back to the original poster: I, and many -included the person that in
this thread attacks the A5 solution- can recommend the A5s as a great
solution at the price. It is not audiophile, but it comes very close at
a price that not too long ago would have been unthinkable. And the Boom
does not change that. The Boom is great as a sattelite that sounds
clean - but it lacks the depth, stereo separation and bass to provide
for long lsitening sessions in front of it, in my opinion. It is great
for backgound music, but far more limited for serious dedicated
listening than an SB3 with a pair of A5s would be.

Sure, one could argue. Nevertheless, the AVR-300 that I owned for a
couple of years, has a dac which comes barely at the level of a
Cambridge 540C CD player. It's a bit lower than the latter, in fact.
So, the myth that says that Arcam A/V receivers are more hi-fi than
other A/V equipment is just that: a myth.
The Arcam AVR internal dacs are not at the level of my Denon 3808 ones,
let alone a dedicated 1500$-dac. And I definitely doubt it's as good as
the Transporter's internal dac (but I haven't personnally tested a TP
in good conditions to assure you about it).

essential. You do this very carefully.
I can advise to listen to a pair of Kef iQ30, especially if you have a

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Powered Speakers Recommendations

2008-11-04 Thread bhaagensen

pablolie;356621 Wrote:

I haven't heard the boom and can only go by what others, including you,
are saying.

In that review I state that they are not even comparable to entry
level stereo systems NAD, Denon, BW etc. which is exactly the kind of
stuff that the A5 price will get you on the 2. hand marked. In fact I
classify them as computer speakers-like stuff, and use wording like
mediocre, not up to par, mess up etc. In fact everything I said
in that post, almost word by word, is exactly what I've been trying to
get thru in this thread.

The only thing that's changed is that I have now heard the Fostex 0.4
and they sound better. This proves that its possible to do better; even
if you don't believe in getting used gear sold by, in many cases, people
just like ourselves.

As I stated I paid only 170 euro and kept them based on several
parameters, only one of which had to do with sound quality. In other
words, a compromise as far as the sound quality parameter is concerned.
This would be the kind of compromise I spoke of in my first post in this
thread.

You even went as far as providing a commercial link to a pair of A5s as
 a tip in the past:
 http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=34810

... and so what?

Hm. Obviously something sored you on Audioengines. I find your analysis
of the past balanced, by the way - but what you have written in this
thread shows that you are indeed irrationally negatively biased for
whatever reason. Your personal history with whatever brand is your
 right, I guess.

If you agree on the stuff I said in that thread, how can you now
disagree when I'm saying exactly the same things? I'm not trying to be
negative. I'm providing complementary and additional comments to the
merits of the A5's. The pros certainly seems well covered, and my posts
reflects the cons. That's it.

My recommendation on the A5, then and now, is to be interpreted modulo
other parameters than sound quality.

Anyway, OP I urge you to post if you have questions or opinions that
haven't been covered in this thread.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Transporter compared with Linn Sneaky DS

2008-11-04 Thread amcluesent

So a Sneaky which includes an amp is priced at 1000GBP, whereas the TP
is 1200GBP with a Controller.

If the Sneaky sounds better, it's either a bargain or the TP is way
overpriced!

Tseez Harmonic, you sound like they need to take away all your kit and
give you just a walkman and hormone cure for the next 6 months or so,
see if you calm down that way a bit. It's just a DAC, not your life.

Edit: made page 3.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] advice for a new amplifier and speakers

2008-11-04 Thread bhaagensen

Oh, if you're bootstrapping like that a practical advice could be to
figure out what kind of equipment your local dealers can provide
listening tests, home-loan etc. on. Then ask opinions about that stuff
here.

Of course if you live in London or something like that I guess
everything is within reach.

And then there are the usuals: what kind of listening room, music,
planned usage etc.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] advice for a new amplifier and speakers

2008-11-04 Thread Themis

If you have a 15m² listening room, then definitely the iQ30 are a good
choice: they can be placed anywhere (even against walls) and are
shielded.

As I see, you're Italian, and I would be glad to propose you some
wonderful Italian beauties (sonically and visually) : The Sonus Faber
Toy speakers. ;)
But, unfortunately, they're at about 850#8364;/pair which is slightly
above your budget. Pity.

Even if you can't try them at home, it's a very good idea to listen to
speakers to get an idea what you like. I would recommend burning a CD
of music you know very well, music that it is important to you sounds
good. Put a variety on there - some simple acoustic stuff, some
complex orchestral music with lots of dynamic range, some distorted
guitar rock, etc. Then bring the CD to as many high-end shops as you
have patience for and listen to it on different systems. Milan and
Turin must both be pretty close, and surely there are a good number of
audio shops there...

Amps are less important. If I were you I'd replace the speakers and
keep your old amp, at least for now.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] advice for a new amplifier and speakers

2008-11-04 Thread Timothy Stockman

I recently purchased a set of Magnepan MMG speakers. They aren't for
everyone, but I think they sound fantasitic, and they're getting better
as they break in. Jazz and classical sound fantastic, and rock isn't
bad, either. They do take a good amp to drive them; I'm using Outlaw
audio 2200 mono-blocks. The speakers are $600 + shipping from the
factory and the amps were around $600 for the pair, plus shipping. To
me, this setup sounds better that gear costing many times as much.
Magnepan sells the speakers with a 60-day, no-questions-asked return
policy so you can see if they're right for you.

 supply any experiences?...Georg

Hi George,

Yes I returned the Dynaudios after both the retailer and then Dynaudio
themselves, told me the hiss from the tweeters was normal. Apparently
it results from having no volume control on the speaker unit (according
to Dynaudio). Certainly not happening from anything further up the
signal chain. This result was very disappointing to me, as I enjoyed
the sound of the Dynaudios very much - but in the end I just cannot
stand hiss, it just drives me nuts over time.

The Quads have no hiss, and sound very nice indeed - different from the
Dynaudios (and much better looking). But neither the Quads nor the
Dynaudios can hold a candle to the sound quality of a good set of
audiophile speakers with a good separate amp - not even close. Keep
the powered monitors when their convenience outweighs the sound quality
difference - this is my advice to anybody considering them! :)

 Michele Sanges

I thoroughly agree with those that state that, especially given your
budget, concentrating on the speakers will get you the biggest bang for
the buck. With 1000 Euro some awesome possibilities with very accurate
monitor speakers open up, and the competent yet mellow sound out of an
Accuphase amp may actually complement them well... you never know until
you try, but the speaker change may be amazing by itself.

many years ago I went down exactly that route - I had a Luxman amp, and
was considering upgrading it and the speakers... and in the end only
upgraded the speakers, and it made me a very happy person for a long
time. I still own that Luxman amp, it performs duty as the garden
system amplifier, connected to an SB3 of course. Everybody agrees it is
the best sounding garden system they have ever heard. :-D

So I have an affinity for the Luxman sound myself, and think that if it
is in good condition you may yet get some good mileage out of it.

The big caveat is that I am not familiar with your speakers at all.
