You mentioned video also so I would recommend the Yamaha RX-V1800. I
bought it mainly for audio as my first requirement and it sounds very
good but it's also very good for surround too. About $1300 US.

Give it some time before coming to any firm conclusions. It's one of
those albums whose real qualities only reveal themselves after several
plays. I now consider it head-and-shoulders above eveything else Kayak
have done. Most of their other stuff is much lighter and poppier.

If you grow to love Nostradamus, the next closest one is probably
Merlin - Bard of the Unseen. This was an expanded remake of their
earlier album Merlin (also not bad). For some weird reason I have a
fondness for another later period album Night Vision, although I
believe most Kayak fans think it's average.

Someone else suggested Phantom of the Night, but I'd say that was
fairly mainstream. As a prog-head I think their early albums (See See
the Sun and Kayak) are the most experimental.

:o) - hence the ironic quotation marks!

I'll listen to the whole thing today whilst decorating the kitchen. My
initial reaction is positive... I love the voice on the spoken parts
and the slightly out of place lead guitar noodling. The backing vocals
are good too. The production veers between very good and congested
when things get very busy. As you imply, this may be a grower...

Thanks for the tip - I never would have bought this otherwise.

this world go to ? I wonder.

Vote for... ah, pity : it's over, already... :) Oh well, next time.

I mean, I'm probably mistaken, but it seems we've spent too many posts
already talking about things that are basic, and obvious to anybody :
no personal attacks in these forums. As Mike reminded us. I see nobody
disagreeing really.
Moreover, I don't think that in *any* forums this simple rule has been
used to abusively ban anybody. So, I doubt there's a risk it will
happen here.

BTW, I agree with Nonreality: it was quite an election, really. It made
me really proud having American friends. :)

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Powered Speakers Recommendations

2008-11-08 Thread esbrewer

Many people seem to happy with the performance of these products - but
why do so many of them have to be eyesores? I understand that many of
them are designed for near-field studio use - but one would think that
having attractive products would make the studio a more pleasant place
to work.

The Audioengine A2s in my daughter's room have beautifully designed and
constructed cabinets - but they would be much less conspicuous with
grilles - which aren't even offered as an option to the best of by
knowledge. I would love to see more loudspeaker manufacturers bring
traditional looking, affordable active monitors to the market. I know
Paradigm produced an active line years ago that critics seemed to love,
but they dropped the line shortly thereafter - presumably due to
lackluster sales.

Can anyone recommend a line of traditional looking small active
monitors - with quality cabinetry and no gaudy lights, switches, etc on
the front panel? Couldn't they expand their market a bit by simply
offering optional grilles?

The small Fostex PM04 is surprisingly good i have them in my kitchen.

There are larger models. Look is ok but not more, black box high gloss
front with curved edges small green led in front (not a blue one yes !
).
No grilles sorry, I remove these on all speakers i own anyway.

Separate power cord to each speaker even in the smallest model ! not
the PC speaker variant with amp in one speaker, there is a real psu in
each speaker no wallwart or brick very good indeed.

http://www.fostexinternational.com/docs/music_products/pm_series_mkII.shtml

Personally i would like to have Meridian active speakers, i'm saving...

Substitute off-topic for political to avoid that argument, and realize

Fair enough. If I implied that there had been power tripping it's not
what I was trying to say. I was talking about the potential of that
happening. I guess that didn't come across right.
