I think you made a great decision. :)

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Transporter versus Duet, trying to decide

2008-11-29 Thread Rodney_Gold

Use the digital output of duet into an external dac of your choice or
into the reciever. I thik the TP is way OTT for what you get and it's
DAC isnt the best thing since sliced bread.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] DAC problem, VTL DAC does not lock !

2008-11-29 Thread bigwheel

I already have read quite some threads about the Squeezebox, however
none of them could clearly explain me why certain DACs do not lock on
to the Squeezebox SPDIF signal.

Could you explain me what the reason is ? and if it is possible to
change the output frequency from the Squeezebox itself ?
Maybe the solution can be found in using something like a Genesis
digital lens or a device like the Apogee Big Ben to resample ?
I use a a Yamamura 1000 cable (1m) as a digital interconnect, because
gives the best sound. (I also tried Siltech HF9 G3 75 Ohm digital
interconnect, but aslo nothing...)

My problem:
I would really like to use the VTL Studio tube DAC as it is by far the
best, however it cannot lock the signal from the Squeezebox ! This is
pretty frustrating. Please advice !

My set:
VTL 70/70 power(heavely modified)
VTL Maxline pre(heavely modified)
VTL Studio tube DAC (now only for ML)
Mark Levinson No27 transport
Sphinx DAC Model Three (for Squeezebox)
Yamamura and Cardas interconnect, loudspeaker and power Cables
Navcom feet (tube gear)
JMlab Vega loudspeakers

I will soon start looking for an upgrade of the Squeezebox power
supply... ;o) (specific project)

Thanks already for all the advice !

Laurens, Netherlands

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Transporter versus Duet, trying to decide

2008-11-29 Thread newy

Although before I bought my system I though I'd use the Controller
exclusively, I would REALLY miss the graphic display of my Transporter
and the ability to choose/change a song with my Harmony remote as well
as my Controller (I use them each about 50% of the time). The VU
meters are an invaluable (and stylish) tool as well.

For that reason, I'd go with a SB3 (or Transporter) w/ Controller combo
over the Duet anyday.

Good luck!

Try to plug your Denon player through your digital coax input of your
Yamaha : this would give you a clear enough idea of how the Duet will
sound through it. If you find the result acceptable compared to your
Denon CD player's analog outputs, then you can go and get a Duet.
If you find that the sound of the Yamaha's dacs are somehow not as
good as the CD player's one, then you probably need a Transporter. ;)

 There's also the Duet/external dac option, but I believe you'll need a
better dac than the Dacmagic to outperform the Yamaha's internal dacs.

Thanks for all the replies thus far.

Themis, I currently have an HDMI connection from my Denon player to my
Yamaha receiver - so I guess I'm already using the Yamaha's DAC, right?
If so, then given that I think CDs sound fantastic now, I suppose that
would suggest that the Duet would be on par with my current CD sound...
right?

 right?Oh... it's a DVD player... I thought it was a CD player. :D

So, yes, if your Denon has no analog outs to the 2700, then you're
right, it's the Yamaha's dac you're using. So the (future) Duet will
sound as good, you're correct. :)

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Benchmark DAC1 USB vs Transporter

2008-11-29 Thread guptaas

I used to use ASIO in XP but haven't bothered to look into it since
changing to Vista. All my playback problems are gone. This is what I
did:

1) Attached Benchmark DAC1 USB to a PCI to USB controller by itself and
all other USB devices to the motherboard USB controller
2) Fresh Vista install
3) Examined device manager by connection and by resources. Moved the
card to different PCI slots till it got an unshared IRQ
4) Installed Mediamonkey and found perfect playback
5) Have been adding other software slowly with restore points and
saving images of my C: drive. Will revert as soon as I notice any
problems.

I am a dummy and the following website proved to be the most condensed
introduction to the subject for me

The complex subject is intelligently divided, information is concise

done.

2008-11-29 Thread mswlogo

brianz;364649 Wrote:
Hi, I am trying to figure out whether to get a Duet or a Transporter. I
currently have a Yamaha RX-V2700 receiver which I guess would be
mid-upper range ($1700 when bought new two years ago). I also have a
Rotel 200x5 amp powering my Polk LSi speakers and a big SVS subwoofer.
Given how amazing CDs sound on my Denon player, I plan on streaming only
FLACs through either the Duet or the Transporter. I am trying to decide
 on the below options.

 1) Have the Duet unit's digital-out send the signals to the Yamaha
receiver for processing, bypassing the Duet's DAC and other
 processors.

 2) Have the Transporter do all processing and send the analog output
to my Yamaha to play in pure direct mode.

 3) Other options? Maybe the Duet with the Cambridge DacMagic outboard
 DAC?

I believe there's much more to the Transporter's sound quality than
just the DAC, such as the overall signal processing in terms of things
like reducing jitter. But I do know my Yamaha is fairly upper end for
receivers, so before I spend a lot on the Transporter, I want to know
if the Duet/Yamaha combo can be expected to match the Transporter's
 performance.

 Any thoughts?

 Thanks,
 Brian

Keep in mind you can RIP the DTS sound track off DVD-A's and play them
back in multi-channel if you hook up digitally.

I probably have 30-40 DVD-A or DTS CD's ripped and they sound great.

I would say you should try out the Duet first. I have a Transporter and
to use it with my Onkyo AVR I had to buy a crossover and use the
multi-channel analog in order to get the sub to work.
