Fine, let's change my wishes : SqueezePlay that would be ASIO compatible + a dedicated (or not, but its just fair that Logitech has some credit for the work) Juli@ Soundcard (I2S out). For info, i've been using Foobar(Foobar + RME + Reymio DAC) with a dedicated web Interface, sound is not as High end as CPlay/CMP. CPlay/CMP + RME + Reymio DAC is better than CEC TL0x + Reymio DAC. I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for a dedicated sound card, as it's kind of the opposite of what they do here. That said I'd vote for an enhancement request that SqueezePlay become ASIO aware (even though I don't have a sound card that can avoid resampling to 48kHz, or know much about ASIO in general). One of the great things about these devices is that they keep you from having to worry about bit perfect streaming being ASIO dependent, but I can appreciate that some people really want to make use of their expensive cards. But to put it in perspective; I'd rather see them spend months working on the SqueezePlay interface than a week on ASIO support. -- Skunk http://www.last.fm/user/TheSkunk/ Skunk's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2685 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=57910 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

still improving the sb classics sound quality
hello alltogehter, i am still dedicated to squeeze the maximum sound quality out of my sb classic. - replacing the switched 5v power supply with a nice home-built 5v linear regulated one (incl. mains filter + enough storage capacity in a closed aluminum case) really improved the low level playback performance of the sb. especially residual noises at 400Hz test-tone levels from -60dB downwards are gone! - what is still missing from my perspective, is some kind of volume adaptation of the quite high output level of the sb connected to my naim nait5i amp. the amp will reach clipping already before the 12 o´clock position of the volume control! listening at lower levels drives the potentiometer´s stereo balance already in unfavorable regions, where the differences between left and right attenuation are quite high. - so, mentally excluding some resistor voltage dividers outside the box (because of various dimensioning problems) and of course excluding the built-in software attenuation, i came to the conclusion, to modify the post-dac filter-circuit (this op-amp based butterworth filter) for less amplification (maybe some 8-10dB), but no change in roll-off behaviour! therefore i would need the dimensioning of that built-in filter circuitry! yes, i checked already the burr-brown/ti recommendations and some other threads, especially the ones where a link was mentioned, with some circuitry drawings of the sb´s output section (i think from sean adams), but nothing solid is available any more. - is there anybody out there, to give some good advice on the filter design/assembly of the sb classic!? thanks in advance and br duesentrieb -- duesentrieb duesentrieb's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=22181 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=57927 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] 24bit/96kHz
...I have to agree. The old adage your system is only as good as the weakest link still holds, and as we all have high quality equipment/cables the need for the source, the original mastering, to be better is probably more important than most of the other things we spend our time worrying about (i.e. 16/44.1 v 24/96 etc.). If the mastering is poor, then no amount of of equipment will make it sound perfect. I think the 24/48, 24/96 issue is just progress. I have listened to a dem on a transporter comparing CD 16/44.1 v 24bit sources of the same material and it is better... or was it just different...?! But progress is progress and that just means that as Internet download speeds improve and storage get cheaper, then recording studios will start making 24/96 the defacto, and that will one day mean that everyone will end up needing to upgrade their equipment (including everyone with SB2 or SB3!) which will in turn drive the future audio market. If this didn't happen we'd all get bored!! ;o) (but if they make the cost of a 24/96 even 10% more than a 16/44.1 then I for one won't buy it -- it isn't that much better). Technically, 24/96 is *different* to 16/44.1 -- that can be proved (one file is 20Mb and the other one is 80Mb)!!! Whether you can hear the difference, and whether it is better, is just down to your ears... To a limited extent you use one to reverse the other... on an individual track. However, on a mix which contains multiple different simultaneous compressions/expansions often with frequency-limited bands (there really isn't enough space to explain all of this here) + overall compression of some sort, there is no way to accurately undo mix compression. Sure, you can slap a dynamic exciter / dynamics processor across a mix and make it lively again but this is a major FX treatment and has nothing to do with the original mix master. I'll try another way. The end results of track + sub-mix/group +master Compression and expansion are non-linear and non-deterministic. So you can't undo them accurately. All you can do is add another layer of FX to the end result! A dynamic range expander is a creative effect. It has nothing to do with accurate reproduction. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] SoftSqueeze + Dedicated PCi Sound Card
Here is the enhancement request mentioned above: http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=10483 I voted for this because I use SP a lot on the desktop, and if I get a card that can take advantage of ASIO it would be nice to have the feature available. Reading some past threads re: SoftSqueeze and ASIO I got the impression that beyond SQ, it might be possible to fine tune the latency to improve sync as well. Might have misread that though. Also, there will always be audiophiles who insist on using the long wire approach as seen above, but if you get them using SC they will probably also buy other peripheral players. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Difference Duet/SB3 vs. cd transport
I was going to start a similar thread last week after listening a few hours to my new SB3. Listening to SB3 digital out to my DAC, I was very disappointed and confused with the sound. It seemed as though I had lost all imaging and soundstaging, compared to other listening sessions with my other transports. Music was very uninvolving, one-dimensional and had none of the magic - like when you close your eyes, the speakers disappear and you become immersed in the music. I was seriously considering returning the SB3, but the logical part of my brain kept telling me that the SB3's digital output should not be the root of the issue. All my music is FLAC, which I streamed as FLAC, as well as WAV for experimentation. Also, I had the digital out set to 100% and had all volume adjustment disabled. I was perplexed because my previous experiences had not convinced me of appreciable differences between transports and digital cables, at least in my system. Fast forward to last night... I played the same recording with the SB3, and the imaging, soundstage and magic were there. I was able to get lost in the recording. I need to do more listening over the next few days to confirm what I'm experiencing. I doubt the SB3 or the rest of the equipment is performing any differently now. I think the issues may have been mental or physiological - something was blocking my ability to enjoy the music. It was like my mind or imagination was just was not receptive to the music, resulting in a flat, uninvolving experience. Also, I had been sick a few days earlier - maybe that could have had an affect too. The point is that I believe one's mental (and physical) state can have a big impact on the level of involvement and enjoyment, which could lead to conclusions about the gear being used. Anyone else experience this? -- adam2434 adam2434's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=17301 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=57757 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

Oh Man, I hope you just didn't open up the whole can of worms entitled cable break-in! On a side note: did you upgrade from Slimserver 7.3 to 7.3.1 between non-musical and musical? There have been many reports of 7.3.0 sounding worse than predecessors. -- kphinney *-Hopefully a new trend:*- I'm not endorsing or advertising any of my gear, nor flaunting it as an Audiophile setup. Suffice to say, my Squeezebox is connected to a DAC, the DAC outputs to a small unpretentious tube amp which drives full range, single driver speakers. The speakers, in turn, present beautiful music to my humble ears. kphinney's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10409 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=57757 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

I thought a little about the break-in of the SB3 being a possibility (if that is even physically possible), but I had already had 24 hours of run-in on it before the disappointing experience last week. I believe I've only used version 7.3.1, as I just downloaded the software for the 1st time a couple weeks ago and just set-up the SB3 last week. -- adam2434 adam2434's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=17301 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=57757 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
