It is good enough for some quite seriously high-end users and producers

Fine, let's change my wishes : SqueezePlay that would be ASIO compatible
+ a dedicated (or not, but its just fair that Logitech has some credit

For info, i've been using Foobar(Foobar + RME + Reymio DAC) with a
dedicated web Interface, sound is not as High end as CPlay/CMP.

CPlay/CMP + RME + Reymio DAC is better than CEC TL0x + Reymio DAC.

Best regards,

I don't think that's gonna happen.
It contradicts the whole concept of getting the audio away from the

That's what the SBs and Transporter are all about.

Also, Logitech is a hardware company that makes peripheral devices, not

As I mentioned some of the components of the signal are compressed and
some aren't. One dilemma is uncompressing the right bits of a complex
signal. Another dilemma is figuring out exactly what manner of
compression was applied to begin with.

I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for a dedicated sound card, as it's
kind of the opposite of what they do here. That said I'd vote for an
enhancement request that SqueezePlay become ASIO aware (even though I
don't have a sound card that can avoid resampling to 48kHz, or know
much about ASIO in general).

One of the great things about these devices is that they keep you from
having to worry about bit perfect streaming being ASIO dependent, but I
can appreciate that some people really want to make use of their
expensive cards.

But to put it in perspective; I'd rather see them spend months working
on the SqueezePlay interface than a week on ASIO support.

DBX tried to use a linear compression to improve performance of tape

There were still the problems of how fast to react to big changes etc. -

There was also briefly Dolby C for domestic cassette recorders which

However in many multitrack recordings today, the production may

still improving the sb classics sound quality

2009-01-09 Thread duesentrieb

hello alltogehter,

i am still dedicated to squeeze the maximum sound quality out of my sb
classic.

- replacing the switched 5v power supply with a nice home-built 5v
linear regulated one (incl. mains filter + enough storage capacity in a
closed aluminum case) really improved the low level playback performance
of the sb. especially residual noises at 400Hz test-tone levels from
-60dB downwards are gone!

- what is still missing from my perspective, is some kind of volume
adaptation of the quite high output level of the sb connected to my
naim nait5i amp.
the amp will reach clipping already before the 12 o´clock position of
the volume control!
listening at lower levels drives the potentiometer´s stereo balance
already in unfavorable regions, where the differences between left and
right attenuation are quite high.

- so, mentally excluding some resistor voltage dividers outside the box
(because of various dimensioning problems) and of course excluding the
built-in software attenuation, i came to the conclusion, to modify the
post-dac filter-circuit (this op-amp based butterworth filter) for less
amplification (maybe some 8-10dB), but no change in roll-off behaviour!

therefore i would need the dimensioning of that built-in filter
circuitry!
yes, i checked already the burr-brown/ti recommendations and some other
threads, especially the ones where a link was mentioned, with some
circuitry drawings of the sb´s output section (i think from sean
adams), but nothing solid is available any more.

- is there anybody out there, to give some good advice on the filter
design/assembly of the sb classic!?

thanks in advance and br

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] 24bit/96kHz

2009-01-09 Thread swarduk

...I have to agree. The old adage your system is only as good as the
weakest link still holds, and as we all have high quality
equipment/cables the need for the source, the original mastering, to be
better is probably more important than most of the other things we spend
our time worrying about (i.e. 16/44.1 v 24/96 etc.). If the mastering
is poor, then no amount of of equipment will make it sound
perfect.

I think the 24/48, 24/96 issue is just progress. I have listened to
a dem on a transporter comparing CD 16/44.1 v 24bit sources of the same
material and it is better... or was it just different...?! But
progress is progress and that just means that as Internet download
speeds improve and storage get cheaper, then recording studios will
start making 24/96 the defacto, and that will one day mean that
everyone will end up needing to upgrade their equipment (including
everyone with SB2 or SB3!) which will in turn drive the future audio
market. If this didn't happen we'd all get bored!! ;o)

(but if they make the cost of a 24/96 even 10% more than a 16/44.1 then
I for one won't buy it -- it isn't that much better).

Technically, 24/96 is *different* to 16/44.1 -- that can be proved (one
file is 20Mb and the other one is 80Mb)!!! Whether you can hear the
difference, and whether it is better, is just down to your ears...
(just hope all that extra HF doesn't upset pets!)

No it isn't. Both compression and expansion are effects. I've used them
both extensively in the studio. To a limited extent you use one to
reverse the other... on an individual track. However, on a mix which
contains multiple different simultaneous compressions/expansions often
with frequency-limited bands (there really isn't enough space to
explain all of this here) + overall compression of some sort, there is
no way to accurately undo mix compression. Sure, you can slap a
dynamic exciter / dynamics processor across a mix and make it
lively again but this is a major FX treatment and has nothing to do
with the original mix master.

I'll try another way. The end results of track + sub-mix/group +master
Compression and expansion are non-linear and non-deterministic. So you
can't undo them accurately. All you can do is add another layer of FX
to the end result!

A dynamic range expander is a creative effect. It has nothing to do
with accurate reproduction. Slapping a DBX, BBE or whatever across a
mix can be fun, but...

 -X360 doesn't decode FLAC
-There's not much you can configure about the way ths 360 handles your

All very good reasons.

However, I have no idea what to expect about the sound quality. I use
the analog outputs of the 360, and will use the analog on the SB3 too
since I don't have a DAC... Do you think I can hope a substantial

 thanx !

As a 40+yr old, my hearing is supposedly sucky. (The irony of
audiophilia is that the majority of people suffering from this disease
are in the declining years of their hearing...)

But it's very easy for me, without tossing a ton of money at speakers,
dac or other audiophilia to tell the difference between a Squeezebox
and a computer sound card. I can still tell the difference between mp3
and flac on most things, unless the mp3 is encoded in 'extreme' mode
when it can be a bit trickier: I can still hear artifacts at 192 if I
listen for them.

I know this isn't exactly what you asked for.. but I dont have an Xbox
to compare it with... just that the SB is really really nice quality
audio, and while I don't think I could hear the difference at my age
and with my equipment between an SBClassic or Receiver and the
transporter... I am pretty confident I could detect the Xbox (even if
the fan noise was zero).

There is a lot of fancy junk inside the xbox that makes for more noise
sources and any of that making it to the audio before amplification
would be bad.

Even with the rules, you can't go back! You would have to remix from
the raw multitrack.

If you stick a signal through a compressor followed by an expander, you
don't get the original signal out! Analogue or digital Compression is a
one-way street. It's EXACTLY like WAV-MP3 - you cant ever get the WAV
back. Once dynamic range is lost, the original accurate level

flatter in-room bass response and leave all frequencies above 125Hz
untouched. I use an inexpensive mains filter and linear PS with the
SB3. Some claim these shouldn't help but I'm sure they don't harm.

Thanx, you both pretty much answered my question (and another question
which was should I get a DAC with the SB3 ?), so I'll get a SB3 and
just enjoy the music, and I'll see next year if I can get even more out
of it =)

As a 40+yr old, my hearing is supposedly sucky. (The irony of
audiophilia is that the majority of people suffering from this disease
are in the declining years of their hearing...)
Your ear is getting less sensitive, especially in higher frequencies,
but it doesn't mean you'll be less likely to tell the difference
between High quality sound and lower quality : It's actually your brain
that does most of the job. Some people can't hear the difference between
128kbps mp3 and lossless, but it's probably not because of their ears,
just that they don't know how to listen ^^

Foul, very foul.

I should note that several recent DBT's have conclusively confirmed
that Ryan Adams and Bryan Adams are, in fact, two very distinct and
different people. However, in the pro-audio world there still remains a
great deal confusion on this issue. Hey, but at least they're pros.

Well for what it is worth, that high pitched squeal that was being
touted on the news a year or two ago as a way to force teens to stop
loitering around your business without annoying others (was it 17khz?
supposedly older people couldnt hear it).. was truly annoying.

I still have reasonably good hearing at the high end, so I am not all

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] SoftSqueeze + Dedicated PCi Sound Card

2009-01-09 Thread Skunk

Here is the enhancement request mentioned above:
http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=10483

I voted for this because I use SP a lot on the desktop, and if I get a
card that can take advantage of ASIO it would be nice to have the
feature available. Reading some past threads re: SoftSqueeze and ASIO I
got the impression that beyond SQ, it might be possible to fine tune the
latency to improve sync as well. Might have misread that though.

Also, there will always be audiophiles who insist on using the long
wire approach as seen above, but if you get them using SC they will
probably also buy other peripheral players.

Oh yeah, and I'm a big proponent of SqueezePlay and want to see it
become loved by others as much as me!

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Difference Duet/SB3 vs. cd transport

2009-01-09 Thread adam2434

I was going to start a similar thread last week after listening a few
hours to my new SB3.

Listening to SB3 digital out to my DAC, I was very disappointed and
confused with the sound. It seemed as though I had lost all imaging
and soundstaging, compared to other listening sessions with my other
transports. Music was very uninvolving, one-dimensional and had none
of the magic - like when you close your eyes, the speakers disappear
and you become immersed in the music. I was seriously considering
returning the SB3, but the logical part of my brain kept telling me
that the SB3's digital output should not be the root of the issue.

All my music is FLAC, which I streamed as FLAC, as well as WAV for
experimentation. Also, I had the digital out set to 100% and had all
volume adjustment disabled.

I was perplexed because my previous experiences had not convinced me of
appreciable differences between transports and digital cables, at least
in my system.

Fast forward to last night...

I played the same recording with the SB3, and the imaging, soundstage
and magic were there. I was able to get lost in the recording. I need
to do more listening over the next few days to confirm what I'm
experiencing. I doubt the SB3 or the rest of the equipment is
performing any differently now.

I think the issues may have been mental or physiological - something
was blocking my ability to enjoy the music. It was like my mind or
imagination was just was not receptive to the music, resulting in a
flat, uninvolving experience. Also, I had been sick a few days earlier
- maybe that could have had an affect too.

The point is that I believe one's mental (and physical) state can have
a big impact on the level of involvement and enjoyment, which could
lead to conclusions about the gear being used.

Anyone else experience this?

Oh Man, I hope you just didn't open up the whole can of worms entitled

On a side note: did you upgrade from Slimserver 7.3 to 7.3.1 between

sounding worse than predecessors.

--
kphinney

*-Hopefully a new trend:*- I'm not endorsing or advertising any of my
gear, nor flaunting it as an Audiophile setup. Suffice to say, my
Squeezebox is connected to a DAC, the DAC outputs to a small
unpretentious tube amp which drives full range, single driver speakers.
The speakers, in turn, present beautiful music to my humble ears.

I thought a little about the break-in of the SB3 being a possibility
(if that is even physically possible), but I had already had 24 hours
of run-in on it before the disappointing experience last week.

I believe I've only used version 7.3.1, as I just downloaded the
software for the 1st time a couple weeks ago and just set-up the SB3
last week.

No ram, it was not just one machine, but blades in a single rack. 704 or
some number close to that of RAM. Many many terabytes of disk all RAID,
etc. a Sun Fire is a 4U unit that holds 48 hot swappable SATA disks.
Since terabyte drives are cheap, a minimal configuration would have 48
