Glad your happy with the second Unit Howard.

Is it now a case of night and day differences between the
Transporter and your SB3?
Just curious!

Yes, I would say it's a different animal. I'm surprised because the
other unit played, albiet for only a few minutes at a time, but it did
play. It was very flat and dry. No other way to describe it. The
replacement is everything it's touted to be. Not as warm as my REVOX,
but then I don't think anything is. Besides that's not a negative, it's
just a difference. I think I will enjoy the Transporter 95% of my
listening time. I will still sit down and listen to my REVOX now and
again. It's like a pair of old comfortable shoes or hearing a long lost
friends voice.

I'm no audiophile and I sure as h*ll don't use gear like you are talking
about.

But even on lesser equipment (period technics amp and Jensen speakers,
SB3, no DAC or anything fancy) the quality of AAC vs flac is utterly
discernible even to chump ears. And I mean very discernible, not
'perhaps, maybe'. Obvious 'mushiness' in complex passages, and other
effects chumps like me don't have the words for. But if it bothers me,
for sure it will bother you.

Unless I am grossly mistaken the listen to an AAC file in its native
state, or ripping to flac will make no difference. Obviously going the
other way is a different question

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Why Reclock If Using Low Jitter DAC

2009-06-11 Thread timequest

Addendum: (to be fair)…

One thing I did not add to my last post and something that is obviously
pertinent when discussing the Transporter, is the matter of sample
rates. I only compared the TP with the Cullen-modded DAC using 44.1/16
(Redbook) sample rates. I did not listen to anything higher via the TP.
I am not a big fan of up-sampling DACs (which the Cullen DAC is) and I
can only imagine that higher sample rates (i.e.: 92/24, 196/24) would
sound superior fed native via the TP as compared to up-sampling.
Additionally, for me, the Cullen DAC and the TP fall short of true
high-end playback. For that reason I am moving on. I am however,
committed to staying the course with digital and music servers, as I
believe continued improvements in digital hardware and the advancements
in, and availability of, high sample rates will effectively bridge the
gap between digital and analog playback. I also believe that
Logitech/SB will continue to be an innovator.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Focal Dome speakers - any thoughts?

2009-06-11 Thread Pale Blue Ego

It probably was not too wise to ask a home theater question in an
audiophile forum, because many people here will consider anything other
than a 2-channel amp + 2 full-range speakers a total waste of time.

I, on the other hand, think small 2.1 and 5.1 systems are a perfect way
to integrate quality sound into a living area, especially one where
non-audiophiles will be exposed to them. The Focal system looks
fantastic and comes from a top-quality audiophile speaker maker. The
small size allows the use of high-tech materials and affords a lot of
placement flexibility. If you and your GF love the sound, then it's
just a matter of being able to afford it.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Mirage Speaker, replacment woofer

2009-06-11 Thread Schindler

Hello

I have a pair or Mirage M-890i Bipolar speakers (2 woofers / 2
tweeters).

Now one felt to the ground an a woofer broke. Mirage still has
replacment woofers and because I like the speakers sound I want to
replace the woofer.

Now I am not sure if I should replace all 4 woofers or just one? The
local Mirage distributor told me I should only replace the dead one.

What should I do?

Christian

My first question is how is it broken? Is it just the surround? Is it
the voice coil? Can you determine what actual is wrong with the woofer?

Because if its just the surround, I would have the drive repaired.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Mirage Speaker, replacment woofer

2009-06-11 Thread DCtoDaylight

Two counter questions:
What type of surround do they use? Foam or Rubber?
How old are the drivers?

Foam surrounds break down with age, if the woofers are getting on in
years, it might be worthwhile to replace them all. If they're
relatively new, or use rubber surrounds, then maybe not...
