I want to use this device for measurements as well as listening so the

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] ALAC or FLAC

2009-11-30 Thread vincentyan

I am using iTunes and sometime use FF and RW, so I decided to convert
all my music from ALAC to AIFF. It worked fine with SqueezCenter 7.3.3.
Now I upgrade to OSX 10.6.2 and SqueezCenter no longer works, so I
upgrade to 7.4.1. Well, problem comes. At the end of every song I
played with my Transporter, there is a pop sound. I tested ALAC files
and MP3 with no problem. How do I understand this?

Thanks, I ran a few tests of my own, I found the difference in file

Whilst AIFF is an option, running wireless and now have three players

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Transporter Noise

Hi All

I have recently purchased a Transporter and it is fantastic. My only
concern is that it makes, what appears to be, mechanical sounds when it
operates. Is this the case for other owners? I want to make sure that

Many thanks for replies

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] ALAC or FLAC

2009-11-30 Thread cunobelinus
I'm afraid I can't answer the specific question, but I can say that your use of
SC is very close (very close indeed) to mine, but that I've had no problems
whatever with 7.3.3 under Snow Leopard.

I too use iTunes and AIFF for all SB music, with ALAC for files used with
large iPods (Mk 4 80Gb) and AAC at 256kbps for small iPods (latest and previous
gen Nanos and iPod Touch). I've just moved from OSX 10.4.11 to 10.6.2 with no
problems at all relating to SqueezeCenter. I have not moved from SC 7.3.3 (and
after all the reports of problems feel no temptation to do so). 7.3.3 works
just fine with all the AIFF files under 10.6.2 on my set up.

I'd suggest that there's something else going on here. The only differences
that I can see between your usage and mine appear to be (1) you use a TP, I use
a Classic and (2) almost all my files were ripped directly into AIFF, then
transcoded where needed into ALAC, not the other way round. These may be more
red herrings, of course.

There are two noises that the Transporter makes.

#1: There is an automatic relay that is used to detect line voltage for
the linear power regulators. They should only click when it starts up
or reboots.

#2: The rotary knob is magnetic, and needs to degauss from time to
time. It should be fairly quiet, but still noticeable.

caused it to degauss quite often. That's solved now, so it should not

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] What outboard DAC do you use with Squeezebox?

2009-11-30 Thread jbc

I'm currently feeding my Linn Unidisk SC a steady stream of flac files
via toslink, and it works fine. The performance is - to my ears - on
par with playing the original disks in the Unidisk. As an aside, a
second squeezebox feeds an analog signal to an older Rotel/BW set-up in
the kitchen/dining room, and that works fine too.

Seeing all the recent reviews of DAC's with asymmetric (apodizing)
filters - like Ayre and Meridian - and hearing the new Linn DS units
makes me think there's still potential room for improvement.

So, as a poll, what kind of outboard DAC do you use with your
squeezeboxes?

Secondly, has anyone switched from 'my' setup to something else, and
had an increase in performance? If so, what did you try?

Thanks,
JBC

Had the same issue with my first transporter. Rattling and regular
clicking (every time menu was at last entry).

Logitech replaced this first unit. The second one i got was perfect
quiet, no noise at all.

The second unit suddenly stopped working, no display, no responding. My
dealer send this also back to logitech, but they did not replace it. I
only got the money back.
With this experiences in the past I will go with a SB3 + external DAC.

I donĀ“t know, why Logitech did not replace the second unit, but rumors
say Transporter has reached end of lifecycle...

spectrum changes going through gates as Sean mentioned and its also very
good for looking at a recovered clock coming out of an S/PDIF receiver.
I can easily see the difference that different connectors and cables
 make in the recovered clock.

What it doesn't give you is a single number, you have to interpret the
spectrum. Different types of spectrum that have the same ps number can
sound very different, which is why I prefer to use this method rather
than the direct time measurement. (well the real reason is that I have a
good spectrum analyzer and I don't have a really good time domain jitter
analyzer and very little chance of getting enough money to buy one!)

 John S.

Thank you! How many forums have I posted this on, for how many years?
Jitter, as a number, all alone, is pretty useless. First off, you have
to know whether you are talking about bit-clock rate, word-clock rate,
or what frequency. A good number at word-clock rate would be awful at
bit-clock rate.

And then you need to frequency content, as well. Without that, the
numbers mean virtually nothing.

Looking a jitter on a spectrum analyzer is possible, but only if it is
pretty gross. Which it will be in the case of the bit-clock in a SPDIF
RX circuit. (That is why folks either use a ASRC or a secondary PLL.)
Yes, you can see a difference in connectors and such.

A really clean source, such as the clock in a certain product that is
not made by Logitech/Slim Devices, can not be measured in that manner.
No one here, other than you-know-who, has the ability to measure it.

One Squeezebox Classic uses the internal DAC of my Marantz home theater

I'm looking forward to picking up a Touch once they are finally

your bin folder (...\Squeezebox\server\Bin\MSWin32-x86-multi-thread)

[2] Create a custom-convert.conf file with the following lines and put
it in your server folder (...\Squeezebox\server)

Code:

#enables live FLAC streams coming in an OGG container
  flc flc * *
  # R
[mplayer] -really-quiet -vc null -vo null -cache 512 -af volume=0,channels=2
-ao pcm:file=#PIPE# $FILE$ | [flac] -cs --totally-silent --compression-level-0
--ignore-chunk-sizes -

  ogg flc * *
  # R
[mplayer] -really-quiet -vc null -vo null -cache 512 -af volume=0,channels=2
-ao pcm:file=#PIPE# $FILE$ | [flac] -cs --totally-silent --compression-level-0
--ignore-chunk-sizes -

[3] Disable natvie OGG Vorbis support under Settings/Advanced/File
Types

[4] Restart Squeezebox Server and tune in url
http://amp1.cesnet.cz:8000/cro-d-dur.flac

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] What outboard DAC do you use with Squeezebox?

2009-11-30 Thread jbc

Thanks for the replies.

So far, the two 'DAC's' that I've heard that I've been impressed with
are the Linn DS units (not cheap!) and the Ayre C5Xe-MP. Maybe there
isn't a cheaper way to get equivalent sound.

Thanks,
JBC

Plenty imho. I advice you not to spend more than 300$ on a recent, new
dac.
Also, don't buy a second-hand dac that was made before year 2000,
except if you know what you're doing. ;)

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] What outboard DAC do you use with Squeezebox?

2009-11-30 Thread iPhone

When using my Transporter, I use the internal DAC and the XLR Balanced
outs.

Most of my Squeezeboxes use their internal DACs.

I feed an SB3 Toslink digital link to an Adcom GFR-700HD and it sound
fairly good.

I feed a Dodson DA-217 MK2-D Digital Processor from either an SB3 or my
Transporter Coax S/PDIF. This is a killer combination and sounds
terrific (bit of over kill in my opinion and would not do it if I didn't
already own the Dodson DA-217 MK2-D Digital Processor). The Dodson is
the DAC that I used with my Esoteric CD Transport which I no longer need
and have sold.

My only recommendation would be to use the Coax S/PDIF instead of the
Toslink if you are looking for audio improvement.

I have the Weiss Minerva. A Media Smart server feeds 176k FLAC and WAV
files to a Transporter via hardware, then from the Transporter to the
Minerva over AES/EBU. The Minerva output is balanced analog. Best sound
I have ever had.
I can also use my OPPO as a transport sending digital to the Minerva.

The URL you posted is a m3u ( playlist ext ). I did not think the
traansporter could play playlists. Am I wrong ?

Yes, you are. ;)

I just found out that if you use the link with the extension .m3u
instead of the one ending with .flac you just need to put the lines
below into your custom-convert.conf and you can set OGG Vorbis support
back to native again.

Thanks for pointing this out! Like this it's much more elegant.

Code:

#enables live FLAC streams coming in an OGG container
  flc flc * *
  # R
[mplayer] -really-quiet -vc null -vo null -cache 512 -af volume=0,channels=2

Personally I hope and believe that download-based services is only a
pitstop on the way to streaming-based services such as Rhapsody. What is
missing are things like quality, open api's, better library management,
reliability, liner notes etc. But in the end such systems with
stateless clients is IMO the future; just look at Google OS :)

I agree with everything you say. I would love the ability to download
music in lossless format, and online shops could make quite a bit of
revenue from someone like me who'd be very willing to pay for the
upgrade service from 256kbit/s MP3 (which is the best Amazon offers) to
FLAC. So I absolutely agree that liner notes and quality are still an
issue for the smooth jazz collectionist. Deutsche Grammophon however has
it pat down - they offer FLAC and high quality liner notes.

And the convenience of the download is unbeatable.

I also agree that the future will mean keeping my collection in the
cloud, that is, not having to even host it on a home server. We
basically just buy usage rights and the stuff is always available
online, or is always available online lossless, and when I dowmload or
stream it to different clients it will do so based on policies that
depend on usage rights and personal preference.
