Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] ALAC or FLAC
I'm afraid I can't answer the specific question, but I can say that your use of SC is very close (very close indeed) to mine, but that I've had no problems whatever with 7.3.3 under Snow Leopard. I too use iTunes and AIFF for all SB music, with ALAC for files used with large iPods (Mk 4 80Gb) and AAC at 256kbps for small iPods (latest and previous gen Nanos and iPod Touch). I've just moved from OSX 10.4.11 to 10.6.2 with no problems at all relating to SqueezeCenter. I have not moved from SC 7.3.3 (and after all the reports of problems feel no temptation to do so). 7.3.3 works just fine with all the AIFF files under 10.6.2 on my set up. I'd suggest that there's something else going on here. The only differences that I can see between your usage and mine appear to be (1) you use a TP, I use a Classic and (2) almost all my files were ripped directly into AIFF, then transcoded where needed into ALAC, not the other way round. These may be more red herrings, of course. On 30 Nov 2009, at 11:14, vincentyan wrote: I am using iTunes and sometime use FF and RW, so I decided to convert all my music from ALAC to AIFF. [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] What outboard DAC do you use with Squeezebox?
I'm currently feeding my Linn Unidisk SC a steady stream of flac files via toslink, and it works fine. The performance is - to my ears - on par with playing the original disks in the Unidisk. As an aside, a second squeezebox feeds an analog signal to an older Rotel/BW set-up in the kitchen/dining room, and that works fine too. Seeing all the recent reviews of DAC's with asymmetric (apodizing) filters - like Ayre and Meridian - and hearing the new Linn DS units makes me think there's still potential room for improvement. So, as a poll, what kind of outboard DAC do you use with your squeezeboxes? Secondly, has anyone switched from 'my' setup to something else, and had an increase in performance? If so, what did you try? This is quite sensitive to changes in jitter, you can see spectrum changes going through gates as Sean mentioned and its also very good for looking at a recovered clock coming out of an S/PDIF receiver. I can easily see the difference that different connectors and cables make in the recovered clock. What it doesn't give you is a single number, you have to interpret the spectrum. Different types of spectrum that have the same ps number can sound very different, which is why I prefer to use this method rather than the direct time measurement. (well the real reason is that I have a good spectrum analyzer and I don't have a really good time domain jitter analyzer and very little chance of getting enough money to buy one!) John S. Thank you! How many forums have I posted this on, for how many years? Jitter, as a number, all alone, is pretty useless. First off, you have to know whether you are talking about bit-clock rate, word-clock rate, or what frequency. A good number at word-clock rate would be awful at bit-clock rate. And then you need to frequency content, as well. Without that, the numbers mean virtually nothing. Looking a jitter on a spectrum analyzer is possible, but only if it is pretty gross. Which it will be in the case of the bit-clock in a SPDIF RX circuit. (That is why folks either use a ASRC or a secondary PLL.) Yes, you can see a difference in connectors and such. A really clean source, such as the clock in a certain product that is not made by Logitech/Slim Devices, can not be measured in that manner. The Minerva output is balanced analog. Best sound I have ever had. I can also use my OPPO as a transport sending digital to the Minerva. -- thestewman thestewman's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=31082 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=72018 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles
Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] How can I stream this?
The URL you posted is a m3u ( playlist ext ). I did not think the traansporter could play playlists. thestewman;490983 Wrote: Am I wrong ? Yes, you are. ;) I just found out that if you use the link with the extension .m3u instead of the one ending with .flac you just need to put the lines below into your custom-convert.conf and you can set OGG Vorbis support back to native again. Thanks for pointing this out! Like this it's much more elegant. Code: #enables live FLAC streams coming in an OGG container flc flc * * # R [mplayer] -really-quiet -vc null -vo null -cache 512 -af volume=0,channels=2 -ao pcm:file=#PIPE# $FILE$ | [flac] -cs --totally-silent --compression-level-0 --ignore-chunk-sizes - -- Quad Quad's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=20234 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=71933 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

I don't as I feed straight into active speakers with in-built dacs, but I do have a friend who's just bought a Caiman and he's over the moon with it. -- Jezf1000 LP12, Rega Saturn, Mac/Edirol UA25 linked to Naim/Avondale amps Shahinian Compasses a SB Duet feeding a pair of AVI ADM9.1's. I have a Transporter along with 4 Classic 3's. I run the Transporter sans external DAC almost exclusively. I run all of my Classic's with external DAC's. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] The end of the CD player :-)
bhaagensen;490472 Wrote: ... Personally I hope and believe that download-based services is only a pitstop on the way to streaming-based services such as Rhapsody. What is missing are things like quality, open api's, better library management, reliability, liner notes etc. But in the end such systems with stateless clients is IMO the future; just look at Google OS :) I agree with everything you say. I would love the ability to download music in lossless format, and online shops could make quite a bit of revenue from someone like me who'd be very willing to pay for the upgrade service from 256kbit/s MP3 (which is the best Amazon offers) to FLAC. So I absolutely agree that liner notes and quality are still an issue for the smooth jazz collectionist. Deutsche Grammophon however has it pat down - they offer FLAC and high quality liner notes. And the convenience of the download is unbeatable. I also agree that the future will mean keeping my collection in the cloud, that is, not having to even host it on a home server. We basically just buy usage rights and the stuff is always available online, or is always available online lossless, and when I dowmload or stream it to different clients it will do so based on policies that depend on usage rights and personal preference. ...pablo -- pablolie ...pablo Server: Shuttle X27D - Ubuntu 8.04LTS - SBS 7.4.1 Sources: SB3 (3), SB Boom (3), Duet, Accuphase DP65v CD Amplifier: Accuphase E306v - Creek OBH21/22 Loudspeakers: Ceeroy 3-way tower (tuned) - Audioengine 5/S8 - Acoustic Energy Aego M Headphones: Grado SR-1 pablolie's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3816 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=71619 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles
