[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Bug in Transporter Firmware 84

2010-12-16 Thread mswlogo

I've been running 84 for a couple weeks now. No AC Failures yet.

I went to run the system this morning. Everything seems fine,
Transporter needles bouncing along but no sound.

Rebooted Transporter and I got sound.

This has never ever happened in the couple years I've had it.

Anyone else have this issue?

Should I report a bug?

In my opinion, the digital volume control is as transparent, if not
more so, than my pre-amp volume control (a BAT 3ix tube pre-amp).

Frankly, I find the statement that opened this thread to be absolute
nonsense. I don't know where the don't use more than 10 dB of
attenuation idea mentioned by some comes from, either. I assume the
 PIOOYA method.

You don't say how you used it, but I can tell you that setting the
Touch's digital volume to like 30-40 to get quiet music leads to
something that sounds only slightly like the original, while leaving it
at 100 and setting the analog volume controls on my preamps way down
does nothing of the sort. So, frankly, I find your absolutist
statement to be just as much nonsense as the statement you are
objecting to.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Bug in Transporter Firmware 84

2010-12-16 Thread Mnyb

I don't think so .

All IP3k cpu squeezeboxes eventually do this .

Either a restart will fix it .

Or it's time for a xilink reset, that fixes most weird audio issues
on old squeezeboxes .

I did not notice anything like that.
Sometimes Transporter freezes, but this happened also before..

IMHO V84 is no worse than V80

+1. I've seen that behavior with every Squeezebox that I've ever owned,
all versions of the firmware. It's fairly rare, but it happens.

Sorry I didn't say anything about the range of use. Using the Neko DAC
(which has a 1V output) as source and the 23 dB gain setting of the
Bryston 3B-SST, a comfortable range for serious listening, mostly to
classical music, is about 75 +/- 15 on the Touch volume, depending on
the recording, while late evening listening might dip down to 45 or so.
If the volume is too low at 100% for the rare recording, I can switch
the Bryston to 29 dB gain.

Oh cool thanks.

For reference, my transporter nor squeezebox in 4 years has never shown
everything as PLAYING but nothing come out. It was not frozen, if it
did that I would be less concerned. But the needles (VU meters) and
time etc. were moving along. It acted as if outputs were muted.

I'm not sure why that hasn't been updated with newer Transporter or
SB2/3 firmware versions.
