There seem to be a bunch of errors in server.log which unfort make no sense to me at all. Any ideas? I am running SBS 7.5.1 on Win7. [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] New to the sound stage, looking for some help to get started
Hiya Audiophiles, I need some help getting started with a new cheap but yet very good quality 2.0 "Hifi system". For starters I just want two simple speakers with good sound reproduction. At the moment I got a SB Touch and I've been using Sennheiser HD595 for listning to my FLAC albums. Now the time has come to upgrade to a bit more than mere headphones. I am looking for getting an amp and some speakers, either new or second hand. I've been thinking about getting a T-amp, but I am a bit puzzled for when it comes to the speakers. I don't want to be spending more than £80 for the speakers as I plan to build a full surround set and use these for rear or front later on. Some input on the matter would be much appreciated:> -- zoqi zoqi's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=43008 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=84941 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

It seems the length which every camp might find acceptable is 1.5m. What about optical cables - is length significant and why? I hear glass is better than plastic...any comments? So, coax versus optical on the SB Touch - does anyone have any comments? Assuming the ADC is transparent and accurate (and studios do prefer equipment that is) a transparent DAC will reproduce the electrical signal that went into the ADC as closely as possible. It won't add any flavour. This may sound unmusical or uninvolving to some ears, which is where taste comes in. Personally, I like transparent for long term listening but I say live and let live. All the alternatives are much more expensive. Also, you won't get a jitter-immune DAC for much less than £1,000. Finally, even into a high-quality DAC IT STILL PAYS to use the cleanest transport you can and that definitely means the Touch (assuming TP is out of reach - and actually I seriously believe the Touch can equal the TP as a transport). It's a question of what you like and what > you feel comfortable with, not sound quality. The presence/absence of discernible differences between various components/formats etc. is an interesting debate. A similar debate rages on in the video circles. There are 'experts' who claim that any and all perceived differences in the picture clarity between blu ray (a high definition format) and DVD (a mid definition format) are based merely on the expectation bias. Same argument goes for the perceived differences between 720p screen resolution and 1080p screen resolution. Apparently, tests reveal that people are incapable of identifying if the video playing before their eyes is on blu ray or on DVD, or if it's at 720p or at 1080p resolution. Each camp will always have its advocates. The main point, however, is to work on one's own self-esteem. The only reason any person ever purchases a component such as a CD player or a digital streaming player (Duet, Touch, Transporter, etc.) is to enhance the enjoyment of listening to music. If the component you've purchased doesn't do that, it's worthless, regardless of how many rave reviews it had garnered. You should therefore promptly return it and get a refund. And conversely, if the component you've purchased is giving you enhanced pleasure from listening to music, then it was a worthwhile acquisition for you, regardless of how many 'experts' claim that it's not really capable of making any noticeable difference. If, however, you suffer from low self-esteem, you'll be at the mercy of the winds of propaganda. In which case, we all feel sorry for you:( -- magiccarpetride magiccarpetride's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=37863 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=84903 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

Is it something to do with buffering, or re-clocking? A $20 DVD player over a $2 cable will give you a digital stream that's easily good enough to recover the bits with perfect accuracy. I know that for a fact, because I've ripped hundreds of disks on a cheap DVD-ROM drive, and all 6 billion bits or so came through correctly on nearly all the unscratched ones. So unless your source or cable is malfunctioning, there's no issue with bit accuracy. Therefore the only potential difference is clock recovery. The bits arrive at certain times (variations in those times are called jitter), and if you're interested in converting them into music played in real time (rather than saving them to a hard disk), you have to base your clock on them. But if the bit arrival times are jittery, that will introduce distortion. So one way in which DACs differ is how they deal with that issue. The Benchmark deals with it in a way that evidently renders it completely immune to input jitter. I've listened a little bit to Radio 6 Music. In addition to the over-compressing on everything, the host's voice 'ducks' (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ducking) the music, which wouldn't be so bad if the attack and decay weren't so fast, or if the host didn't talk so much during the songs. Radio 2 on FM doesn't sound too bad most of the time. It helps that the music they play (unlike R1) is mostly older and thus less compressed to begin with. Unfortunately, the BBC still seem to be over-compressing their FM broadcasts as part of their (futile) love affair with DAB.
