Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Squeezebox Touch with two USB DACs

2011-05-15 Thread jackocleebrown

Thanks for all the replies on this subject.

I think that we will put together something with switching at the
pre-amp stage rather than inside the squeezebox. I think that as a
first try we will simply follow Phil's suggestion of two identical
pre-amp and switch the input simultaneously with the remote, this seems
to fit the bill nicely. We may be able to link the IR receivers of the
two pre-amps to avoid the "remote signal only detected at one pre"
problem.

Jack.

You are quite right to be a little suspicious about A-B switching. In
my experience it makes some types of difference between the speakers
very easy to spot, for example changes in frequency response become
very obvious - as do dispersion changes (given the right track and
room). However, it encourages the listener to evaluate the speakers in
small chunks of 5 to 10 seconds and this can be misleading. If I listen
to a new loudspeaker on a familiar track of 3 or so minutes then I will
slowly form an opinion over the whole track. For example, at the first
chorus I might think the vocal sounded a bit shrill when it got loud -
when the second chorus is reached I can listen out for this again and
try and confirm that suspicion. Perhaps I will decide this time that it
was not a problem. Perhaps after the track is ended I will pick another
track which I have more confidence that the vocal is cleanly recorded
to double check. If I had done the same test with an A-B switcher I may
have switched to loudspeaker B and repeated the part of the track - it
is conceivable that loudspeaker B is a bit sucked out in the mid and
gives a much less forward presentation, in this case I may come to a
completely different conclusion about loudspeaker A. There is certainly
a place for the A-B switcher but it is only to be used with caution!

This goes back to what I was saying earlier - imagine the tweeters are
torches - you want the beams of light pointing at your ears. How wide
the beam is - and so how much will stray onto the table - is down to
the design of the speakers.

2011-05-15 Thread tank121

What are you recommendations for a DAC that with will not only offer
improvement over the SBT dac would also offer improvement when plugged
my Sehnheiser 595 headphones directly into my Arcam A85 amp.

Budget up to £300.00

I know there is a Beresford model.

Would the sound travel right over the top of the table ?

e.g. table 4ft speakers mounted at 4.5ft ?

In my wifes scenario and my own the speakers will be 7ft apart.

In my wifes we will be sat 14 ft away from speakers, in mine 7ft.

Or is my suggestion better for acoustics ?

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Will Logitech Revue Google TV wipe out Squeezebox?

2011-05-15 Thread your momo

Not wipe out, but Revue could strengthen SB line provided it runs SBS on
board. Acting as a server would allow Logitech to controls the HW
running SBS for the first time and would simplify usage model.

Technically it's feasible and many customers would love to control SBS
from the TV ...this wouldn't not prevent current usage model from LAN,
Wi-Fi, IR
For sure Revue can also act as a player provided it's audio format
support is extended toward SB standards: FLAC, AIFF, WAV...etc

For serious listening, you would need to put a covering over the table
(even a thick tablecloth would do... maybe with a thermal protector
blanket underneath)
Otherwise you are going to get a nice acoustic reflection from the
tabletop.

However, I suspect your wife's intention is to have the bare tabletop
exposed when not eating...

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Garage Conversion - Sound advice ?

2011-05-15 Thread tank121

Wife wants the dining room table right smack bang in the middle of the
room.

If the speakers are on the stud wall about 5ft up would this work ?

Our seating position for listening would be at the far end next to the
window.

Would the sound clear over the top of the table ? Somehow I doubt it!

My plan have the table at the end nearest to the window, then 2 seats
can be positioned 7ft away from the speakers which will be the distance
between them. In this case the speakers will be mout about 4ft from the
floor.

Your opinions please.
