[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Objectivist question: DAC with highest resolution? (lowest noise floor...)
Was looking at the Transporter review and measurements by John Atkinson recently online and noticed that the measured resolution of the Transporter was about 20-bits. Amazing - certainly among the best they've ever documented! Wondering what is the highest resolution DAC you've ever seen *measured* using a methodology like that in Stereophile (in room temperature, LOL)? -- Archimago Archimago's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2207 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=91950 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles
[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Musical Fidelity M1 DAC V Rega DAC
Well my home trial with the Rega finishes on Thursday and so far my two friends who have done some a/b testing for me have picked out instruments that they didn't know existed on tracks. Both of them have expressed it's not a night/day difference between the stock DAC but is noticeable. Has anyone auditioned both the Rega DAC & the MF M1 Dac with the Touh ? In my experience, as in yours, switching from coax to Toslink has resulted in a more neutral presentation, which I much prefer over an euphonic one. To my ears, it does not sound sterile, but I'm sure it can be with some other equipment and in some rooms. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Teflon tape
I read one forum where a guy tried this. He measured the current draw of the system with and with out the tape. It was actually a bit lower with the tape. I passed it on to one of the design engineers here who is a skeptic but has an audiophile friend, so is a bit sympathetic. Here is his response: That sounds like it's out of left field. Maybe the compressed teflon is damping microphonic vibrations in the plug leading to a consistent nonvibrating contact with overall lower DC resistance (hence lower current draw). Less vibrations would seem to imply less noise as well. -- regalma1 regalma1's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=6658 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=89174 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

I would expect nothing less from anyone serious about their system. However, there are several factors that must be carefully considered. This has to be an audiophile grade generator with windings from copper cured for +500 hours in a bath of meticulously temperature controlled vintage crude oil at ridiculous pressure. Also, a precision generator must not be powered by any run of the mill diesel engine (engines with harmonic dampers are particularly ill suited for audio purposes, but that goes without saying I guess), actually any piston engine is likely to have too much torsional vibrations resulting in overtones in the output of the generator. Japanese audiophiles swear by Mazda rotary engines but recent listening tests with gas turbines from General Electric running at a speed tuned to an odd multiple of the crossover frequency of the speakers gave favorable results. It wasn't a blind test though, the leaves flying off the trees outside the window was a bit of a giveaway. Next is the choice of fuel, naturally there may be no additives that may affect the imaging or contaminate the high range the way ordinary cheap jet fuel would. Medical grade ethanol is preferred by many for it's neutral tone, while a 24 year single malt is popular for the noticably warmer glow it gives to the tube amps and you will also enjoy a slightly smoother sound from your vinyl records. Sadly, the whole idea of running your own generator falls over since there is no economically feasible method of supplying enough air of the quality required. Normal outside air varies wildly when it comes to temperature, humidity, pressure and oxygen isotope ratio, not to mention the sonically detrimental effects of certain pollen types. So far, listening tests has been constricted to 5 minute sessions, nobody has been able to provide more processed air of the necessary grade to run the gas turbine for longer periods than that. If you live in a rural area and has a less revealing system you may get away with using outside air during the month of october. Maybe one shouldn't mock this stuff though, spending money (even absolutely obscene amounts as in this case) on a power cord does in some sad way make more sense than spending them on "audio grade" USB cables or hard drives. -- alfista alfista's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=32396 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=91896 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles
