I'm thinking the cancellation will happen acoustically instead of electrically. Most material will have L and R in phase for deep bass. If the rationale for subs throughout the room is to have overlapping phase, thus evening out room effects, then stereo signals out of phase will ruin that plan too. I think! IOW channel cancellation isn't the biggest issue, if I understand the pro multi sub people correctly. I even still like the original sound of the first release. It sounds a bit thin and you really have to turn it up but it is still one of better recordings out there. You may check if you have an early cd version that was sold with pre-emphasis and apply de-emphasis. Not sure but on several ripping tools or drives this detection is still not working 100% all the time. -- Wombat Transporter (modded) -> RG142 -> Avantgarde Acoustic based 500VA monoblocks -> Sommer SPK240 -> self-made speakers Wombat's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=4113 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=93506 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

IME it all depends on the low frequency extension of your main speakers AND the careful matching of that to the sub's crossover. It also helps to have a way of taming LF room modes, either by bass traps or DSP. If your sub's crossover is set sufficiently low (30-40Hz, depending on slope), one sub should work just fine. It has a technically superior s/pdif output with lower jitter and a "cleaner" waveform. Whether or not you can hear a difference depends entirely on your DAC. It is not a "game changer" and the improvements are subtle at best. Some DAC's will sound identical, others will show a small improvement. I'm not familiar with your DAC so can't comment on it specifically. My gut instinct is to not worry about it. This is my custom_convert.conf file (attached). It is designed to work with a 24/96 convolution file form Audiolense. It only supports certain file types (the ones I use) and you need to replace my MAC address with that of your device, using Notepad or Wordpad as a text editor. You will need to rename the file form custom_convert.txt to custom_convert.conf and place it into the same folder as convert.conf (use Windows search to find that file). +---+ |Filename: custom-convert.txt | |Download: http://forums.slimdevices.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=13062| +---+ -- Phil Leigh You want to see the signal path BEFORE it gets onto a CD/vinyl...it ain't what you'd call minimal... Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] HTPC vs Squeezebox?
probably no difference but, as all reasonably good digital sources sound the same: HTPC depends on the audio sound system of your OS investigate asio drivers and kernel streaming and similar issues if it is windows. sound quality can depend on computer performance OS may re-sample or invoke volume controls and many such niggling issues, but if you have those under control... Squeezeboxes are computer independent the audio system on the serving computer is of no consequence it only streams the files, the actual playback is done by the squeezebox itself. So neither drivers or soundcards have any impact, a squeezebox is not a remote soundcard this is why they are good :) Also having a squeezebox means that the serving pc does not need to be in the same room, it can be hidden in the basement or a closet . However a Squeezebox Touch support 2ch up to 24bit and 96kHz if you want to play discrete multichannel you need hdmi . Higher sample-rates are dealt by via re-sampling on the server so your 176,4khz and 192khz files can be played anyway trough the squeezebox. This can be an issue if the server is a low powered nas or similar (runs out of cpu/memory) otherwise this works fine. -- Mnyb Main hifi: Touch + CIA PS +MeridianG68J MeridianHD621 MeridianG98DH 2 x MeridianDSP5200 MeridianDSP5200HC 2 xMeridianDSP3100 +Rel Stadium 3 sub. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Tired of compression ruining your music?
Talking about Dire Straits, it was AB listening to Brothers in Arms that once had me convinced that vinyl was vastly superior to CD. It took a while before I understood that it wasn't the medium, it was the War On Sound. Still can't bring myself to listen to the CD, though. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] HTPC vs Squeezebox?
I doubt that anyone here has done a comparison on -your- system ... ;p So I think you'll have to try it out for yourself. But if you're using an external DAC (like the Onkyo's) for both the SB Touch and the HTPC, don't expect much of a difference sound-wise. -- Soulkeeper 'Bug 17797: Updating wiki.slimdevices.com' (http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=17797) Soulkeeper's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=35297 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=93593 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Designing by "listening"= failure.
I was thinking about the topic. Why there is no more thorough deconstruction of specific products/claims. 1. The level of disinformation is close to 100% almost the whole audio press are into to the scam or fooled by it, you cant get through. so it is futile to even try 2. The claims by voodoo hifi designers are so ridiculous that no serious person is going to spend any time debunking it as it is "obvious" bs . I think not, there are so many lay person interested in hifi that some basic well known facts should be repeated now and then for educational purpose the "obvius" is not always obvius. And exemplification by in detail examine a bogus product and why it does not work is a good way to get to the point . For example amps with high output impedance and low power can't really drive speakers and the fact that some amps needs "special" speakers should make you get the obvious conclusion about these amps real performance . And we are again back in the state of affairs we was in the 60-70's as many products now have performance we thought we left behind in the past . So sadly even the crude and incomplete measurements used then would expose these products . This will be the most long lived audio myth of them all . because in the 70's we used the simple thd at 1kHz in to a simple resistor to rate amps often at the 1% and other simplifications this is marketing bollocks so they hit us with fine numbers on stuff that really was no good ok. Especially driving real speakers. So in reality these things did not measure well . So there really is no measure well but sound bad products just bad measurements ! just look at the noise levels for example. But modern amps are designed with the total performance in mind data is done with 20-20kHz measurement at rated low level of thd which is better. But in the background there are much more test regarding stability and other factors. So modern products with todays simplified data set presented in marketing are much better with the exception of some HT products where we again see a kind of spec war, often to high power figures . The specs in papers are still incomplete but they are not a coincidence but often a consequence of otherwise good engineering . An ADM or other null tests would be better . This is a background to why some people just disregard the technical performance completely :-/ But you can go about it the other way if a cult design has 3% thd and 8 watt power and other issues this is a major problem even if the x factors they claims to fix really existed ! So it does not matter how much silver you have in the cables if you still have 3% thd or 2 ohm output impedance . So we should start looking at products that at least are better than our thresholds for detecting these problems . Again this should not really be a problem 2012 but as shown by audio note you can get 1950's performance for your money :-/ -- Mnyb Main hifi: Touch + CIA PS +MeridianG68J MeridianHD621 MeridianG98DH 2 x MeridianDSP5200 MeridianDSP5200HC 2 xMeridianDSP3100 +Rel Stadium 3 sub.
