I use a dedicated 24/7 small PC, not a NAS. It has all my many music
files on its 500gb internal 3.5" drive, and runs ONLY LMS plus the
software necessary to run headless (allows remote control from my other
devices). The one I use, Fit-PC2, uses very little power under load,
around 5W, less when quiescent (but not zero). It's tiny, about the
size of a cigarette package. No fan, heat is dispersed through the
solid aluminum case.

It's been on pretty much every hour of every day for the past two and a
half years without anything resembling a failure. If I'm going on
vacation or something I'll typically turn it off if I remember, which
doesn't always happen. If I needed to I could install a larger drive,
or start using an external drive, but I'm ok for the immediate future.

At the time I bought it (diskless) I had a spare XP licence so that is
what I installed. I'd prefer Win7, and if I ever upgrade the drive
that's what I'll put on it.

As to sound quality, bits are bits. No difference where the bits are
located, as long as they are properly served to the SB devices.

R.

Hi all, i have a question specifically for Phil. I installed Logitech
media server on a new imac with osx "lion".
I found it quite difficoltä to run the latest version of Inguz (0.9.33)
for installation problems following this procedure :
http://www.sugarmonster.net/InguzDownloads/index.html
But now i have the plugin dsp nicely active and correction works with
flac and mp3 files but not with apple lossless (alac).
I tried and tried but it seems that we need to make some changes in the
configuration files (?).
I ask for a little help and sorry for the bad English language.
Tanks,

Marcello

Not with that lineup of players you don't.
If all your files are 16/44.1 then you'll be fine.
If you have stuff that needs transcoding to 24/48 then a NAS won't
necessarily be up to the job.
My NAS most certainly doesn't do transcoding - I ran a Touch and SB3,
and ended up buying a second Touch because of the transcoding problem.
SB3 is now unused.

I would suggest you need to be careful making blanket statements such as
this. At best this is a statement of what you hear in your system and
at worst its possible that you have an expectation bias of the changes
(cf your assersion that EDO 0.7 and 0.6 are vastly different... or
tuning buffers beyond their max value makes a difference...)

I think what we can say is that in any computer based music system there
may be some level of cpu activity related noise which is present on the
power rail/ground plane. Whether this can be detected on the output
interface will be hardware design specific and what impact this has on
the downstream components will be very dependant on the construction of
the downstream component. In this case it sounds like your usb-spdif
device is suseptible to noise on the usb interface. Its likely than
many well implemented async usb dacs may be less suseptible, others will
be.

However the assersion that Touch is worse than a PC is a blanket
statement which I don't think you can stand by. It will depend on the
PC, its operating system and specifically the output interface hardware
and its power rails. There is simply too much variablity there to be
able to say that it will be inheriently better or worse that Touch.

As for how the touch output process influence sound quality - I suspect
that the main issue here is that there is so little going on within
touch that you can detect the impact of indiviual software
processes/tasks on the power rails. On a generic PC there will be many
more active threads and so I suspect the background cpu activity/noise
is far more diffuse. However if you look at specific outputs such as usb
then you will see regular interrupts which are handled by the kernel in
just the same way as touch (everything uses ehci based usb chipsets for
instance). There will also be application layer things which can be
tuned, but the impact this has on the output will be very dependant on
the hardware implementation.

To summarise - I think the best you can conclude is that with your vlink
192 you can detect more noise from Touch than from your PC. I don't
think this should put people off using the touch - it may mean they want
to look at true asyc dacs (where there is a fixed clock is next to the
D/A converter and there is no spdif/pll)

Weired sense of humor or need to lookup what WOL is.

First post: "I am considering a NAS instead of using my PC since I would
like to be able to play music without having my laptop/PC turned on."

Problem: having laptop/PC turned on (24/7)

Possible solution: NAS/Server or try using WOL on existing PC.

Love it! I tried it and it really does take the noise floor down to
almost imperceptible levels. ;-)

huh? WOL just allows a computer to wake up from suspend by receiving a
"magic packet". Once awake, the WOL is unrelated to anything. How could
this affect audio?

I'm confused, which is untrue? The fact the the vlink 192 isn't
galvanized isolated on the input or that there are others on this forum
that just repeat what you say?

for anyone interested in jplay, there is a long thread at
hydrogenaudio.org. If one is not in the mood to read the thread, the
short takeaway is that "jplay" seems to be smoke and mirrors

think the vlink 192 is galvanically isolated on the output, so any usb
noise will affect the sound.

To conclude, the Touch is just too noisy to live in revealing system.
The EDO mod shows up the inadequacies of the spdif out, but the EDO mod
introduces noise itself, not least the 2500 per second usb interrupts.

To get a real idea of what computer music should sound like try
listening to jplay xtreme kernel out using foobar2000, usb out from the
laptop to a vlink 192, absolutely stunning sound.

have spliced the 5v linear supply into the usb cable and cut the usb
screen.

not heard anything better.

In theory, a small linux box should beat a laptop for sound quality, but
don't think the touch will be able to.

I think that device works with most USB dacs and S/PDIF converters that
have a type B female and may be useful if the dac/converter itself is
powered only by USB, such as the V-links. You simply connect your
USB-cable with the Aqvox and then the Aqvox to the Dac/converter. The
Aqvox supposedly provides cleaner power compared to the USB host's own.
A local Hi-fi magazine tested it recently with good results.

The V-link 192 is galvanically isolated (the V-link II is not) so it
should not be very sensitive to noice from the USB host. I tried cutting
the shield on a simple USB cable anyway and noticed a significant
difference with the V-link 192. That should not account for the
percieved difference in sound quality between 0.6 and 0.7 though, but
now I have no problems at all with the sound of 0.7. Although I haven't
tried to go back to 0.6 I'm willing to confess that the differences I
experienced may not be there. I switched to 0.7 after a pretty long
listening session and that may account for my experience. My apologies
to Triode. Now I believe the sound I get from the Touch and the V-link
192 beats any source I've ever used. It definitely beats the S/PDIF out
from the Touch.
