Hi Deaf Cat

IMHO it is well worth a try. My vanilla LMS is running on a Synology
NAS. For playback I recently turned an older notebook into a dedicated
music player. Just install Windows Server 2012 R2 Evaluation in core
mode, run AudiophileOptimizer and launch Squeezeplay with your favourite
output. To me it sounds clearly better than Windows 8 without any
adjustments.

Within AudiophileOptimizer you can choose between different Sound
Signatures and Digital Filters. There is also the possibility to
compare them to the standard Windows settings. This is a good way to
experience differences you can achieve with OS tuning. Of course all the
modes are still bit perfect...

Oupps, I might have just stirred up a hornet's nest... Sting me, I
really need that. :-)

Cheers

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Anyone used this... AudiophileOptimizer

2014-03-05 Thread Deaf Cat

Hi Quad,

I have actually been experimenting with disabling different services
etc, on win8, the most recent was to disable the paging file :-o pc
is still going and sounding better than before :-) fingers crossed it
keeps going as I rather like it.

From these experiments I can only assume that with all the work gone
into the optimizer it would work rather well, especially on server12 as
I understand server12 is minimal compared to win8, and minimal seems to
work rather well, from the small amount of experimentation I have done.

However, server12 is a bit out of my budget, not even going to try it on
trial as I'm guessing I will like and then have difficulty going back to
win8.. :-(

Thanks for letting me know as I was unsure with all the previous
comments above it would affect things when using LMS, from my
experimentation I would guess it would work well!

Enjoy your music :-)

Cheers
dc

So Deaf Cat and Quad are comparing Apples and Oranges , probably

I believe that you have that just a little wrong. The statement should
read:

But of course reactions based on a solid understanding of the basics of
how digital audio works instead of magic audiophile pixie dust were to
be expected.

The great thing about online forums about audio, as opposed to
publications about audio, is that other forum members get to call BS on
all your misguided beliefs. So either deal with it and if not, well you
can always write letters to the various high end audio publications
telling them how great their magic pixie dust works.

Now does the AudiophileOptimizer work with DSD files because if not it's
worthless.

The only reason I went into a rant is that I just find it absolutely
amazing that people who propose and believe things that can be proven to
be untrue using modern science, as in the case of almost every
audiophile myth, claim that the people who disagree with them are being
close minded! So if I claim that 2+2=5 then anyone who doesn't agree

Now back to the usual audiophile magical thinking.

Nothing's wrong with that, just not particularly germane when it's
obvious from subsequent posts that Deaf Cat was talking about using
Audiophile Optimizer to tweak a server computer that is streaming to

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Thank you

2014-03-05 Thread Quad

Maybe I should see a doctor. I always try to be loved by everyone. :-)

I think it is time to say thank you to some of the forum members who
constantly point out scientific arguments against audiophile myths. This
saved me money and energy. Here is what I stopped doing because of you:

- Buying expensive RCA cables. While I can't say they all sound the same
to me, the price rarely correlates with my joy listening to them. Some
surprisingly cheap but solid cables subjectively often beat their highly
praised and expensive counterparts.

- Buying hi-res stuff. Some of my all-time favorite recordings are
standard 44.1/16bit. No need and no possibility to improve (eg some
re-masters by MFSL). On the other hand there are quite a few hi-res
recordings that are a rip off (eg Hotel California, Come Away With Me,
Supernatural, Rumours,...). And on top of all, some of my all-time
favorite music is recorded quite poorly anyway. And I still love it.

- I didn't and I will not hop on the DSD train. Basically for the same
reasons as above. And ironically, those labels who offer DSD are often
the ones that already care about sound quality. For these recordings the
difference is minimal if any. And for those companies who don't care
it's worthless to buy their recordings in DSD anyway.

- I gave up on JPlay. It's not worth the effort. Its most purist setting
asks you to manually drag drop music files into their player. Then you
have to wait a couple of seconds or even minutes to let them be loaded
into memory. Finally your computer goes into hibernate mode and you can
start listening. No seeking, no browsing, no cover art, no multi-room.
This is a complete and obsolete anachronism in the age of music
streaming. It is almost the same royal PITA as vinyl, but without the
nostalgia. And it doesn't sound better to me, there is no reason why it
should.

Cheers

PS: But remember, I passed a properly designed ABX test for MP3@320kbs
vs. FLAC with a recording I own physically, ripped and converted by
myself. I would be more than happy to reproduce the result for you at
any time. Sorry couldn't resist. :-)

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Anomalies in Beck's Morning Phase...

2014-03-05 Thread Wombat

I have some other view meanwhile. I doubt it is bad what happened here.
Beck may have collected this music over a while and gave it for
mastering.
I have no doubt this material is mixed at 24/96 and so this is a valid
Studio Master - people ask for it, people get it.

I think there are much bigger rip-offs the other way around when the
versions that sell as Studio Master sound different to the 16/44.1
version by purpose.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Thank you

2014-03-05 Thread pablolie

the ability to differentiate between MP3 and FLAC is merely a function
of the recording quality - c'mon that's baiting for the oldest flame war
:) good ole 80-20 rule... only 20% of your music collection *rightfully*
deserves to be FLAC'd for sound quality. but you may FLAC it all for
convenience.

as to HD recordings of every time that magically get remastered... some
are better... some are worse. the gatekeeper there may not be the *pure*
sound quality, it may just be our preference for one of the two
recordings period. but i have several recordings where my plain ole
16bit 44kHz back-in-the-day-CD rip beats the bells-and-whistles new
24bit 192kHz re-issue i felt compelled to buy to contribute to the
artist's estate... :)

our hobby is a funny one. and if you are an audiophile you are like
Sisyphus rolling up the rock that mountain to then do it all over again.
otherwise you would have stayed with you first system, come on. :D

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] What Would You Replace a Transporter With?

2014-03-05 Thread pablolie

i was extremely tempted to get a Transporter. sweet sounding design.

but when the time came to make changes i used one of my Touch and use a
Benchmark DAC2 HGC as the DA. truly a very revealing and yet not
fatiguing little unit, and very flexible because of all the input
(including analog) and output options, including its great ability as a
preamp. i am just a customer but can give it my whole-hearted
endorsement.
