Yes, in LMS it's not a problem at all. I use RG on PCM and not on DTS or
AC-3 and life is good. I was just commenting that I'd be irked if Roon
calculated RG on that material with no ability to turn it off.

Maybe this is another one of those audiophile things where No Serious
Listener Would Ever Want More Than Two Speakers. :)

I don't really care one way or the other about DSD, I just like discrete
surround music and much of that is only available as DSD. It's on my
mind more at the moment because I'm ripping my SACDs via one of the
naughty methods that technically isn't supposed to exist. Since LMS can
convert it to PCM on the fly, I'm leaving it as DSD. LMS can't deal with
the surround DSD, of course, but Foobar2000 can convert even the 5.1 to
PCM on the fly.

I didn't disagree. Just pointing out that squeezebox wasn't cheap enough
to be a no brainer for anyone when it came out, and like many things to
not really take off in their lifetime it's only really thriving now
because the hardware got cheaper, used. A second life, if you like.

I have to say though I don't think any one hardware component is the
future of music for the masses. (Other than the smartphone.) There will
be no ubiquitous Squeezebox Touch 2. More likely an app that ties a
bunch of existing tech together.

$300 versus $3000 (average price of high end music streamer, often
without a server component)

$2,700 buys quite a lot of digital music

That's solvable for RG tags simply don't have them in these files that
fixes it for LMS where you can turn of this completely.

I suppose you can in roon ,some of that crowd is very picky about
bit-perfect in the usual audiophile way ( they think the sound will be
severely broken if not bit perfect ).

But what does roon in depth scanning assign for volume level on a
dts/ac3 file wrapped in flac or wav ? It's just noise .
It's also used to generate cute vase forms in th UI ?

The big brand streamers make a big thing of the auto rip and tag, and
they make some effort to curate the results too. Cddb is one big
stinking mess, which is why they don't use it (not unedited anyway).

>From what I can gather LMS is one of the few music streaming systems
that even attempts to manage one's music library, most of the other
music streaming devices simply rely on third party music library
management or brain dead mobile apps. While those "solutions" may be
okay for the average user with a relatively small music collections
(maybe a couple of hundred albums) for large music collections these
solutions are pretty much useless, hence the need for software like
Roon.

As for "automatic" ripping and tagging - no thank you since these rely
on the information available on the internet, which is very often
incorrect or at least not the way one may prefer. Since I carefully tag
or retag all music in my library I don't want some app retagging my
music with incorrect information.

What do you mean by "picking the .PDFs is totally outside of LMS " ?

Have a look at
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?99537-Announce-Music-amp-Artist-Information-plugin=757041=1#post757041
, Michael went on to include .pdf files as long as they are in the same
folder as the tracks, but some files can be up the tree as the plugin
assumes a structure of Artist / album / track. So a file called bio.pdf
would be in the Artist folder and will be displayed under "Local
Artwork".

Now, a suggestion as to how Local Artwork can be automagicly displayed

Clutching at straws - something really bad was happening in the analogue
chain via the ground connection before the Intona thing isolated the
grounds. Something like one half of a differential connection somehow
'shorted' to ground somewhere...
