Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] transporter or SB question

Flat frequency response with the Transporter, while the SB3 rolls off at
the extremes. That's consistent with my listening tests.

Considering its low price and the fact that it uses a minuscule
wall-wart power supply, the Squeezebox measures very well. Its noise
floor is higher than that of good CD players, but the excellent jitter
rejection came as a welcome surprise

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] transporter or SB question

2007-12-31 Thread FatElvis2000

I have a Rega Jupiter 2000 (very nice) and a SB3 in the same rig. The
intent was to keep a few key CDs around (rotated) for playback
through the Jupiter for the intense reference listening sessions (when
the wife/kids aren't around... no basement listening room for me yet).
The SB3 for internet radio / Sirius, and the rest of the music
collection.

What's happened is, despite the beauty of the Jupiter, I use the SB3
more often. The sonic trade-off is there, the Jupiter is far superior
to the SB3 (however, the SB3 fares better, but still sounds congested,
against the Rega Planet).

I even thought about dumping the SB3 at one time, just to force myself
to use the Jupiter more often. I almost convinced myself, thinking
that I really only listen to 5-6 CDs in rotation at any one time (a
holdover from the 5-disk changer days)

So now, like GuyDebord, I'm thinking of going with the Transporter as a
sole source. The Audiophile measurements look really good and I like
how it will display in the rack.

Guy -- how happy are you, truly, with the move away from the Saturn?
Do you miss anything about it?

SuperQ;252342 Wrote:

The sold wood remote for the amp is amusing :)

The only thing that often stops us are gov't regulations and, more

I think that's a big part of it. The emotional connection is lost with
12,000 songs at one's immediate disposal. Pulling out the vinyl,
cleaning the LP, droppping the needle -- complete with an intermission
mid-way through -- requires a certain committment to the specific album
in play.

I have an LP player, but mostly for kicks. Also because there is a TON
of material available, for cheap, at garage sales and swap meets. Its
fun. But I don't fool myself that it's somehow better than CD.

Listening to the first half of Kind of Blue, on LP, is a different kind
of experience.

Also you can bet there's a lot more margin in the Transporter than the

Lots of companies have lost lots of money catering to the classes on
supposed high margin products. The market for *any* type of $2,000
audio source component is limited. Imagine if Slim had put reosurces
against a mainstream audiophile component?

But lots of companies do this - a high-end testbed that pioneers certain
concepts which eventually trickle down to the mainstream products. Slim
Devices have in fact specifically said so. And they're not much for
saying things about upcoming products, so this speaks volumes.

Right -- companies with money to burn. If I were an investor in Slim,
I'd be asking serious questions about how development resources are
being allocated.

The Transporter is pure masturbation on the part of Slim Devices, and a
completely unnecessary product. Logitech doesn't make high-end stereo
componentry!

I could see a $599 Audiophile Grade product with upgraded DACs (e.g.,
Dual Wolfsons) and a class A output stage. Something to compete with
the Arcam CD73, Rotel RCD-1072, Rega Apollo, and other entry level
audiophile CD players. This was Slim's chance to impact music
listening behaviors in a fairly significant way, but overshot with the
Transporter. Can't imagine much money is being made here, if even
helping Slim break even.
