Please. I don't care nearly enough about this to be considered a
 fanboy, and I don't own a Transporter.

It just seems a little odd to spend so much modifying a SB for improved
sound quality when the company that designed it in the first place has
produced a carefully engineered version with precisely that goal in
mind. While I don't doubt that Patrick Dixon knows what he's doing,
he's competing against a team of pros that have quite a few advantages
 - a research budget, a nice lab stocked with fancy equipment,
engineering degrees, and the experience of years spent designing three
generations of SBs from the ground up. Not to mention a customer
 service department.

As for aesthetics, that's a perfectly valid reason, but obviously a
matter of taste - personally I don't much like the way either of them
 looks.

Let's not forget that the sb+ has been around since before the
transporter existed (afaik).

So, I've been following the discussions, reading and investigating the

I rate their competence and honesty, etc., etc., etc., and, naturally,
I have to think to myself: what about the cottage industry of
 modifiers?

After all, for more or less -- I suppose slightly more -- than the
price of a SB3 with an external PS, a new DAC (internal or external),
etc., you can get a beautiful and versatile device built to beyond NASA
 standards. What could be lacking?!

Then, on the drive home from work, it hit me: tubes! Somebody will
something euphonic, with greater SNR, etc., and I bet someone comes up
with a tube buffer or output stage, etc.

Of course, tubes don't seem very popular in this forum, but, hey.

PS, I am being facetious and just kidding around. Please, no flames or
personal assaults, okay? NO OFFENSE INTENDED TO ANYONE.

Besides, it really is a half-serious question: I mean, how would you
 improve on this thing?

Want tube sound? Go add something like the mf x10v3 tube buffer.

2006-06-06 Thread davidcotton

As well as Red Wine Audio theres also Bolder Cable that do sb mods.

Word of advice though. If your thinking of changing the amp any time
soon wait and do that first. Get used to the new sound that the change
of amp will bring. Other wise you won't know which item in the system
is doing which. Change one component at a time and get used to that
sound first. IMHO and all that of course!

Anyway good luck...

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: SB mod on not mod, what to expect vs CD player?

2006-05-18 Thread davidcotton

I'd been using an all marantz combo (66 KI SIG amp and matching 63 KI
SIG cdp)quite happily, but the amount of discs overtaking my room was
starting to irritate me, which is why I went for the sb3/qnap combo.

I've been using an m-audio superdac between amp and sb3 and just sent
that off to have some mods done to that (all the basic op amps and
circuit board upgraded basically!). I'd love to send off the sb3 to
somewhere like bolder, but not sure of the shipping costs from here in
the uk, plus theres something like an 8 week waiting list anyway!

Cheers...
