True, but FWIW, your EQ doesn't provide linear-phase room correction

Mr. Bowes, What I told you _should_not_ even require substantiation,

Absolutely the USB cable makes a difference. It was recently
demonstrated that a significant increase in performance can be had by
using a double-ended USB with an 0-pass filter directing the 0's to the
standard larger connector whilst the 1's are routed to the smaller USB
connector. It dramatically improved clarity of the highs and the bass
was deep and involving. This of course is because the 0's were able to
flow more freely whilst the 1's were packed tightly in single file,
 reducing congestion and jitter.

Not only that, but it's a little known fact that most USB cables are
optimized for little-endian bit trasfers. The good news for all you
audiophile USB cable users is that if you transcode all of your music so
that it plays backwards, the fidelity will be completely restored.

but just having the measurement gives you more information about where
to best place main speakers. In an ideal world, we would have room
measurement and correction for every device and then a system
measurement (because once you combine them in the room it changes the
in-room response). Typically a one or two notch filters is all that is
 needed per LF device.

No need to spend that much money (for a SMS-1). The Inguz DSP plugin
is ideally suited to this task... and it's free. For not much money one

If the TOSLINK sounds better, then fix the coax out.

Doesn't jibe given the excerpt I quoted from JA in this prior post:
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showpost.php?p=445269postcount=8

In my case the DAC clearly has far lower levels of jitter ( 10x less)
using the Toslink input. This *may* hold true for other DACs too. I'd
recommend one to experiment with both inputs if they don't have the
means to measure jitter.

In summary (and to clarify my original statement), I can't say that the
Toslink output on the SB produces a cleaner signal than the S/PDIF
output, but in my case, the Toslink connection to my DAC produces vastly
superior sound. It seems apparent that this is due to the reduced
levels of jitter.

FWIW SB2/3 already exceeds the manufacturers' specs for both the E and
the KE parts by a good margin - dig back in the archives for some other
comments on K vs KE. One off the mods I have tested is the super
regulator and this indeed pushes it a bit further in terms of lowering
the noise floor. Some test results here:
 http://www.seanadams.com/sb2_super_regs/

 I haven't tried Vinnie's changes yet so I can't really comment except
that you will have a 1Vrms output voltage and no LP filter, so the
 sound will surely be different.
Thanks Sean. 1V is about a volt and a half shy what of what it takes
to drive my power amp. I also assume that bypassing the audio output
opamp raises the source impedance to some degree, which may have an
added impact in its ability to drive a power amplifier. As you
mentioned, the loss of the two pole filter by Vinney's mods goes
against the manufacturers' application notes:

-Delta-sigma DACs use noise-shaping techniques to improve in-band
signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) performance at
the expense of generating increased out-of-band noise above the Nyquist
frequency, or fS/2. The out-of-band
noise must be low-pass filtered in order to provide optimal converter
performance. This is accomplished by a
combination of on-chip and external low-pass filtering.

Figure 27(a) and Figure 29 show the recommended external low-pass
active filter circuits for single- and
dual-supply applications. These circuits are second-order Butterworth
filters using a multiple feedback (MFB)
circuit arrangement that reduces sensitivity to passive component
variations over frequency and temperature. For
more information regarding MFB active filter design, see FilterPro™ MFB
and Sallen-Key Low-Pass Filter Design
Program (SBFA001), available from the TI Web site at

Sounds like audiofool hyperbole to me. Did you ask Vinnie how much the
jitter is reduced by his mod?

Lighten up. I used the term in an endearing way.

Btw, the Elpac supply doesn't require any soldering skills. It's plug
and play.

Can anyone advise on the best mod for an SB2 -- e.g. Red Wine v. Bolder?
Neither! If you really feel the urge to modify the unit simply replace
the power supply with a linear one.

What does that involve, opening up the unit and soldering?
You don't need to touch the unit itself. The mod simply replaces the
wall wart switching supply with a linear type. Thre result will be a
slightly quieter noise floor.

You can build/buy your own
(http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=16245highlight=elpac)
or spend 15x the cost and get (a presumably nicer) one from Bolder.

OK. What about upgrading the DAC, that's not likely to affect the
 sound?
You sure sound like you're hell bent on modding the unit. Have you
determined that the internal DAC is inadequate? The internal DAC in
the SB2 is pretty good. IMO it sounds better than many DAC's including
my modified Audio Mirror.

 Sorry this is really basic.

For the benefit of the non-electrical type, can someone list the exact
specifications required to get this power supply? i.e. Volts, Amps,
 etc etc.

And how do I tell between a linear and a non-linear supply?
You need +5V @ 1A. The Elpac unit linked to in the above post was one
of the recommended units. The manufacturer specs should state if it's
a switching supply.
