More natural and especially soft sounding is how many many systems out
 there sound.

The key challenge is to have a smooth silky and still extremely dynamic
sound with all the details in place.
Obviously first you need to know that there are hidden details.

Usually all the instruments and voices become more of a point source
with lots of air around them. The face or better voice of a singer is
 no
longer 20 inches wide, it goes down to 2 inches. The low end goes
deeper with a much better slam if you're getting closer to the limits.

You look at a black wall in the back of a clearly aligned multilayer
arrangement. I can tell you I havn't seen many system being able to do
 that.
For sure all that will add to a thinner impression.

Not to forget. The better the systems the more awful awful recordings
sound. I can tell you that.

I usually have two three different reference tracks to figure out what
direction I'm going, while tuning the system.

The better the source the more you'll see the weaknesses of your
 downstream engine. That's another downside...

I have by no means a highend system but I am a pretty good listener and
what you are describing above is what I feel are the changes I hear with
TT3 over TT2. Great work, thanks! Made a small donation...

One question: if I run TT3 with all the mods enabled incl tt -k, is
the touchscreen still enabled as it was with TT2? With all other
features turned off it would be great to know that this is also off.

I can definitively hear a difference. First impression is background a
bit quieter, a bit more air in the treble. A keeper! Thanks!

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] External DAC?

2009-07-24 Thread peber

Actually, the speakers is the best part of my system...! They are made
by a company called QRS in my home town, homepage:
http://qrs-speaker.se/index.php?menuid=003. Mine are called Callisto and
seems to be out of production now but when I bought them we compared
them to some other speakers (of course), among them an American one
quite famous at the time (lost the name though, sorry) that then had a
price of around $3500 here in Sweden. My speakers sounded as good and
was only half the money. My amp is a Harman Kardon HK670, the budget
catch of the year when I bought it... I am for the moment quite happy
with it but if I would replace anything this would be it.

Sometimes starting to talk about something can be dangerous... There is
a HiFi dealer very close to where I work; I visited them on my lunch
break the other day and talked to them regarding a DAC. They recommended
and let me test a Cambridge DacMagic at home over night... You can all
see where this is going, right...?

The DAC lifted the performance of my SB to a new level. The sound is
more open and precise; I have never had a bass and midrange like this,
not even with my CD player! The treble can be a bit sharp on some
pop/rock recording that are recorded that way but on a properly made
recording it is just great. The soundstage is wider and deeper... So the
DAC...stays...! Now my SB system outperforms CD so the next step is to
connect my CD player to the DAC. All is well...

Does anyone know if the SB Classic inverts phase over the digital out?

OK, thanks everyone! Seems I can take it easy a while and if I find a
DAC worth testing I will do that...

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] External DAC?

2009-07-20 Thread peber

I have a system that have cost me around 25000 SEK (about $3000); my CD
player is a Pioneer DVD 668 which I am very happy with. Now I have
integrated a SB classic into the system and I am for the moment quite
happy with the sound, the sound from the SB is about on par with the DVD
player which I find a bit shocking considering the price difference. I
have had a few friends over and there were jaws dropping all over the
place... ;-) At the moment I am busy ripping all my CD:s to FLAC...

Now to my question... I have noticed that some users of the SB use an
external DAC to improve the sound. How much do I have to spend on a DAC
to get a clear improvement over the internal DAC? I do not want to spend
a lot and only get a subtle change... Do you have any suggestions for a
DAC that is known to work very well with the SB and is a real
improvement?
