yes, but my preamp isn't - hence the need for rca to xlr as the ground
loop is occuring between the preamp and the amps (no ground loop if
preamp is taken out of mix and transporter goes directly into amps).

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] xlr pinout?

2008-06-15 Thread ratso

i know that there is a lot of conjecture as to whether or not the cable
will work to break a ground loop hum and i didn't mean to open a whole
can of worms here. but as i quoted earlier in this thread, jensen
transformers believes it can help and they are pretty much the top
experts in this subject i believe, so i do think it's worth a shot and
much cheaper then buying a transformer. so does anyone know the pinout?
is there such a thing as a 'standard' pinout, i believe the US uses a
different pinout then the rest of the world, is this correct?

haha thanx dag, just thinking the same thing. yes i have everything in
the same power strip and have disconnected my cable (the usual

any preamp, including passives, actives, passive/active, etc. as far as
getting a balanced pre that is a last resort, but most of the pre's i

In the apnote, a transformer is required in both balanced to

This was also my experience when I set up PA equipment for bands. I
built several homebrew audio transformer boxes (Jensen JE-11
transformers) which were quite effective in solving grounding problems.
The root of grounding problems is often incorrect grounding topology
inside the equipment, but adding an external transformer is an
effective band-aid. I also carried a couple medical power isolation
transformers for situations where it was more desirable to put the
transformer in the mains circuits rather than the audio path, but the
 effect was exactly the same.

thanx also for that timothy. i will let everyone know if using just
single ended xlr fixes a hum for me. i have read that it is effective
for some users. i also know that everyone is not fully onboard the full
balanced boat, like mick from supratek who seems to think single ended
is the way to go for curing hum and preserving SQ (there i go jumping
into that controversy).

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] xlr pinout?

2008-06-14 Thread ratso

lots of people have cured ground loops with single ended xlr (and many
haven't either!). according to jensen transformers it may have to do
with the construction of the cable and they say a properly constructed
cable can have a pretty dramatic effect on hum (see fig. 2.1)

http://www.jensentransformers.com/an/an003.pdf

anyways it's a cheap fix if it works which is why i want to try it. as
for single ended vs. fully balanced i'm not even going to touch that
controversy.

using a preamp i was going to get some y-cables and biamp (well i run

woofer)the signal. seeing as how i wouldn't be using a preamp, could i
do the same thing from the rca outputs of my transporter - split the
output signal between two amps with a y cable?

absolutely perfect condition, i've only had it a month or so. it can be
seen on their web page, i have the black one so it will match any system
with a blue led. i got it assembled, cost with shipping was $315, so
first $200 paypal takes it. PM me please. add $15 for insurance and
shipping to lower 48 states, u.s. only. all sales final. and hey while
i'm at it, i feel kind of bad selling this on this forum, but i
honestly wanted to give you guys a shot at it before putting it up on
ebay. how about a for sale area in these forums?

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Welborne Power Supply for SB3

2007-10-30 Thread ratso

i have one of the pre-assembled power supplies from welborne labs (i
haven't yet learned to solder that's my next project!).
no their stuff isn't 'junk' they have consistently gotten great reviews
over the years. the problem seems to be their owner isn't really capable
of running his business correctly. i was one of many who had placed an
order and then shortly after the web site informed us that they were
moving and all orders were on hold. rumors on many boards also stated
that the owner was having some sort of personal problems but that's not
for me to say. many people suffered through loooggg delays and most
asked for refunds (which there also seemed to be problems recieving).
their was no phone numbers or email addresses given to customers
waiting for their paid for merchandise. some filed complaints with the
BBB. i recieved my power supply for my SB after approx. 3 month wait.
it came in the wrong color, i ordered red and got a black one. but
after reading so many horror stories i figured it was better to live
with black. it IS an excellent unit. i know when ordering kits their
have been complaints of parts missing. i would love to order from them
in the future as i really want some of their products, but i would be
hesitant to do so without some prior reassurances from their owner.
although these problems stem from this whole 'moving' issue, there
seems to be long standing problems with his customers per other audio
message bb's.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] SB3 Bolder Mods

2007-10-30 Thread ratso

WOW. i bought a squeezebox. i was excited about it. i sent it out to be
modded because mostly i was curious. i could afford the mod and i
didn't spend a whole boatload of money on it. i like it. would it hold
up to an a/b comparison? no it probably wouldn't. does that mean i
should be miserable and unhappy? nope. i still enjoy my music. i don't
think power cords or cables do one damn thing for sound. i bought blue
jean cables because they're a little nicer than lamp cord and radio
shack interconnects. i am pretty sure they don't sound any better but
i'm happy. i dont believe that external power sources sound any better
but mine sure looks cool. buying new toys is fun. getting excited and
trying things against your better judgment is fun. i dont believe in
isolation platforms or feet buy mine look great. i dont believe in
arguing against the validity of a/b testing but i also think that
sometimes misses the point. i dont believe in copper vs. silver,
cryogenics (?) or superiority of tubes.

some people like to argue that all of the above make their gear SOUND
better even though they wont actually test it to support their
arguments. who cares? be happy.

some people like to argue that all of the above are true and that
others are idiots for buying them. who cares? it wasnt you that bought
it. why stomp on someone else for being happy.

ps - when (if) i can afford a transporter, i'm leaving it alone.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] rolling back slimserver

2007-07-11 Thread ratso

yes the bolder analog mod removes the analog op-amp which effectively
reverses the phase of the unit. thus they recommend rolling back to
firmware 15 which as i see it can't be done on a mac. as for whether or
not you can hear it is up for some debate i guess. wayne from bolder
said he can easily tell when his speakers are out of phase, i know
others have a much harder time (hence the need for hundreds of dollars
gadgets to tell you whether or not your in phase or not). there also
appears to be a cult following for firmware 15, who seem to believe it
sounds better, but there's already one psychoaccoustics thread started
somewhere and i don't want to start another...

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] rolling back slimserver

2007-07-10 Thread ratso

i have a question that could go in many different forums here, thought
i'd try it here. bolder suggests using version 1.5 of slimserver to
correct for phase issues (i think that's right, audiocircle's server is
down right now and i can't pull it up). anyways, the program written to
roll back to earlier slim builds is for pc and i have a mac, osx 10.4.
anyone know another way to do this or have other suggestions, i really
do not want to switch my speaker wires every time i change inputs.

a difference (like my 'upgraded' power supply). So i started looking at
some of the cheaper DAC's out there, which reviewers have been
comparing to ones costing much more like the LITE-AH. And i finally
settled on moodlab's Concept - good reviews, small, stylish, and at
$200 what the hell? My gear (and my ear) are not audiophile quality,
but they're not crap either - i power a mid
priced denon AV reciever through Infiniti IL 50's. I plan on building a
mid priced 2 channel reference system as soon as possible. So what do i
think? I listened to 'a thousand beautiful things' from annie lennox'
bare cd through my SB3. I played it back to back with DAC on and off to
get an A/B comparison. This song features a smooth clear recording,
annie's beautiful voice and a sudden blast of bass that shakes my house
at the start through the 50's powered subs. I was suprised that my first
impression of the DAC was it actually tamed out that bass blast some.
But as the sound went on, i found the bass more integrated and smooth
in the song. I could also hear more detail in the background including
a synthesized wind at the end of the first
verse i had never noticed before. Was i just listening harder? Or
making it up to justify my purchase? No, i think i can say it clearly
made an audible difference. Enough to be happy with my purchase? Yes,
$200 well spent i think. Would i be happy if it was $1200 like the
DAC's this one is compared to in some reviews?
NO.
