i know that there is a lot of conjecture as to whether or not the cable will work to break a ground loop hum and i didn't mean to open a whole can of worms here. but as i quoted earlier in this thread, jensen transformers believes it can help and they are pretty much the top experts in this subject i believe, so i do think it's worth a shot and much cheaper then buying a transformer. so does anyone know the pinout? is there such a thing as a 'standard' pinout, i believe the US uses a different pinout then the rest of the world, is this correct? -- ratso Martin Logan Vantages - Wyred for Sound SX-1000 monoblocks - Blue Circle BC-21 preamp - Slim Devices Transporter - APC H10 power conditioner - Cables by Me! ratso's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11493 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=48882 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

The root of grounding problems is often incorrect grounding topology inside the equipment, but adding an external transformer is an effective band-aid. I also carried a couple medical power isolation transformers for situations where it was more desirable to put the transformer in the mains circuits rather than the audio path, but the effect was exactly the same. thanx also for that timothy. i will let everyone know if using just single ended xlr fixes a hum for me. i have read that it is effective for some users. i also know that everyone is not fully onboard the full balanced boat, like mick from supratek who seems to think single ended is the way to go for curing hum and preserving SQ (there i go jumping into that controversy). -- ratso Martin Logan Vantages - Wyred for Sound SX-1000 monoblocks - Blue Circle BC-21 preamp - Slim Devices Transporter - APC H10 power conditioner - Cables by Me! ratso's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11493 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=48882 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

lots of people have cured ground loops with single ended xlr (and many haven't either!). according to jensen transformers it may have to do with the construction of the cable and they say a properly constructed cable can have a pretty dramatic effect on hum (see fig. 2.1) http://www.jensentransformers.com/an/an003.pdf anyways it's a cheap fix if it works which is why i want to try it. as for single ended vs. fully balanced i'm not even going to touch that controversy. -- ratso Martin Logan Vantages - Wyred for Sound SX-1000 monoblocks - Blue Circle BC-21 preamp - Slim Devices Transporter - APC H10 power conditioner - Cables by Me! ratso's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11493 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=48882 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Welborne Power Supply for SB3
i have one of the pre-assembled power supplies from welborne labs (i haven't yet learned to solder that's my next project!). no their stuff isn't 'junk' they have consistently gotten great reviews over the years. the problem seems to be their owner isn't really capable of running his business correctly. i was one of many who had placed an order and then shortly after the web site informed us that they were moving and all orders were on hold. rumors on many boards also stated that the owner was having some sort of personal problems but that's not for me to say. many people suffered through loooggg delays and most asked for refunds (which there also seemed to be problems recieving). their was no phone numbers or email addresses given to customers waiting for their paid for merchandise. some filed complaints with the BBB. i recieved my power supply for my SB after approx. 3 month wait. it came in the wrong color, i ordered red and got a black one. but after reading so many horror stories i figured it was better to live with black. it IS an excellent unit. i know when ordering kits their have been complaints of parts missing. i would love to order from them in the future as i really want some of their products, but i would be hesitant to do so without some prior reassurances from their owner. although these problems stem from this whole 'moving' issue, there seems to be long standing problems with his customers per other audio message bb's. -- ratso ratso's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11493 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=39714 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

yes the bolder analog mod removes the analog op-amp which effectively reverses the phase of the unit. thus they recommend rolling back to firmware 15 which as i see it can't be done on a mac. as for whether or not you can hear it is up for some debate i guess. wayne from bolder said he can easily tell when his speakers are out of phase, i know others have a much harder time (hence the need for hundreds of dollars gadgets to tell you whether or not your in phase or not). there also appears to be a cult following for firmware 15, who seem to believe it sounds better, but there's already one psychoaccoustics thread started somewhere and i don't want to start another... -- ratso ratso's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11493 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=36715 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] god another DAC thread...
sorry. maybe this would be helpful. i have kinda been wondering for a while if getting a DAC would actually improve my sound or if it would just be one of those thing that you plug in and go well i THINK i hear a difference (like my 'upgraded' power supply). So i started looking at some of the cheaper DAC's out there, which reviewers have been comparing to ones costing much more like the LITE-AH. And i finally settled on moodlab's Concept - good reviews, small, stylish, and at $200 what the hell? My gear (and my ear) are not audiophile quality, but they're not crap either - i power a mid priced denon AV reciever through Infiniti IL 50's. I plan on building a mid priced 2 channel reference system as soon as possible. So what do i think? I listened to 'a thousand beautiful things' from annie lennox' bare cd through my SB3. I played it back to back with DAC on and off to get an A/B comparison. This song features a smooth clear recording, annie's beautiful voice and a sudden blast of bass that shakes my house at the start through the 50's powered subs. I was suprised that my first impression of the DAC was it actually tamed out that bass blast some. But as the sound went on, i found the bass more integrated and smooth in the song. I could also hear more detail in the background including a synthesized wind at the end of the first verse i had never noticed before. Was i just listening harder? Or making it up to justify my purchase? No, i think i can say it clearly made an audible difference. Enough to be happy with my purchase? Yes, $200 well spent i think. Would i be happy if it was $1200 like the DAC's this one is compared to in some reviews? NO. -- ratso ratso's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11493 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=36011 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
