Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Advice on pro studio monitor vs consumer hifi amp + speakers
Yup agree with all that has been said. By near field I meant not the other side of the room - although obviously they can be set up this way. You are so right - the room/speaker interaction is everything - which is why monitors can get fatiguing in a domestic environment. Not many of us have the luxury of a true dedicated high end listening room. I actually rather like active speakers - but again as Darrel Yeates says - it all depends. +1 on the Linkwitz Orions. Bastani's a close second. But you do need space for them (not suitable for small apartments). Incidentally the BBC get their monitors from a bunch of folk - Harbeth,DynAudio, PMC to name 3. The BBC aren't exclusive to one outfit. Depends who and what for. I would add that a relative newbie into hi fi is generally far better off with speakers designed for a domestic environment than those designed for studio monitor applications, amplification aside. What I really want is a pair of active harbeth SHL5's he he. -- tricka Transporter +/- Lavry DA 10 - LFD Zero - Harbeth C7 es3's Harbethed and lovin it tricka's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11614 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=58179 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

Studio gear can be fatiguing after a while but very impressive initially - you really have to try them in your own room. Great for near field listening (which is what they are designed for). Also depends what you listen to and your tastes in speakers. No question some active speakers are tremendous performers. The Adam Gamma in particular. Or the Harbeth M40.1 active's. Sorry just re read your target speaker group. Hmm try some Quad 12L active's - you might find them abit easier on the ear. Personally I don't care for uber revealing speakers (Pro Monitors). Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Transporter samplerate
Bit rate (20 0r 24) has a far greater effect on perceived musical reproduction than sample rate, all things being equal. I cannot really hear any difference between 24/88 and 24/44 where I have down sampled the same music file. I was chatting about this with the Linn Records sound engineer (David - very nice man too!) and he confirmed this to be the case - lots of combo's but what really matters is bit depth. Incidentally I would argue that; 1. your speakers are the most important item relating to perceived quality 2. Now getting onto music - the vast majority of music out there is 16/44. There is precious little 24/96 available (Linn, HDD from Giant etc) and the future? Who knows? The current state of the computer audiophile art is the 24/176.4 HRX albums (Reference Recordings) which numbered a whole 4 at last count. Bad luck if you don't like those 4 records or performances. And please bear in mind a higher sample rate does not always equate to better sound or sound that you'll like more. Far more important is the performance and the skill of the orchestra, conductor and sound recording technician, not to mention the acoustics of the recording venue. 3.how the analogue output stage is handled on the DAC is what really matters. The chip set less so. -- tricka Transporter +/- Lavry DA 10 - LFD Zero - Harbeth C7 es3's Harbethed and lovin it tricka's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11614 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=57631 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Transporter samplerate
Thank you for your post Alfalfa You are of course entitled to your view and accordingly I value it even if I respectfully cannot agree with most of what you say. Dynamic compression occurs but far less than you would think, particularly on non pop recordings eg Jazz , Classical. The 2L comparative files you list are excellent reference points and provided you have a high res system are interesting. My system cannot really pick the difference between 24/48 and 24/96 FLAC - but it is fairly modest. Musical but modest. I don't have capacity for the higher res to either be played back or heard at this time. Having said that I have heard the HRX high res files played via a MAC/Lynx/AES/ Berkerley DAC and they are very, very good indeed. But then again so was the rest of the system (about $70,000 worth) so the red book wasn't exactly shabby either I don't think anyone is against high res music (48/96 and above) - I think what is being said is that it is largely irrelevant at the moment and likely to remain so for some time, the commercial realities being what they are. Besides many, many great performances cannot be repeated for modern mastering so that I am afraid is that. Should we not value them because they are 16/44 only? Furthermore, after hearing some truly high end systems (between $100,000 - $500,000), I would say there is plenty of info on red book. It gets mighty close to top analogue systems (which have fair less freq extension but are more pleasing, at least to my ears) of the same caliber. I think perhaps you might like to read abit more of Dan Lavry's white papers on output stages. 90% of DAC's are crippled by the cheap and nasty implementation of Op Amp's. Nothing wrong with them if they are done right. I would say that no one design of DAC chip is clearly superior to another - rather it is the implementation of the DAC that is key. The humble NOS Phillips chips, correctly implemented (Zanden,47 Labs/Altmann) can sound stunning. The best oversampling ditto. Indeed the Transporter is open to criticism in this area and why most modders focus on tidying up the output stage eg a tube buffer (Modwright) or JFET. I guess without trying to be provocative I would suggest if you are interested in truly high res beyond 24/96 then you best go the pc audio way - the best of which at the moment are the MAC/Lynx (AES)/Berkerley or Lavry 924. Incidentally I have built a number of pc based systems with various high end cards for transport duties to various dac's and I must say that they can sound very very good indeed. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] SB3 Digital Inline Adapter
Hostile skepticism Sean does not pass for being well mannered in my book. Something along the line of that looks interesting perhaps you would care to share abit more about... would have sufficed. Very well: It is my friend Ricky that is the telecommunications engineer not I. I just research the various mods out there and work with him on what we think will work. He traces all the circuits and does the lectronics. We live 800 miles from each other. Adding an inline transformer will not reverse the ferrite's action, it would only reduce the EMI. He did notice that on the scope. If the inductors L8 and L9 inside the SB3 are bypassed eg in the internal mod, the HF roll-off will be improved. There is a trade-off with the L8 and L9 bypassed, the pulse transformer must be used with the SB3 to reduce the EMI. The advantage of the Inline Pulse Transformer adapter is no internal mods and can be used with different S/PDIF links. He is gauging the effectiveness of the inline adapter by user's feedbacks, so far has been positive. The improvements are various between the combinations of sources and DACs, some combinations may be more noticeable than the others. I have posted the pics again along with the link to the pulse transformer for those that are interested. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Which budget constrained DAC for SB3?
With respect to all the posters everyone's point of view is correct in it's own way. I would suggest that the overall syngery between the components is more important than the one link in the chain. $$$ cost doesn't necessarily predicate the level of performance and you should listen with your ears not your prejudice: just because something costs more doesn't necessaily mean it will sound good in your system. Nothing wrong at all with the SB3 Melody SP7 Onix Ref-1 combo. In fact very nice. With the Melody's 45 watts per channel you should be getting decent soundstaging and imaging from the Ref 1's. Mind you compared to OB speakers any small bookshelf will struggle for soundstaging. The SB3 is veiled in stock form and the Ignuz plug-in makes a huge difference to be sure. I had a SB3, tried all sorts of Dac's with it and concluded that while it you could difintely improve it's sound by an external DAC, it began to look expensive when the costs of the mods (digital), cables, DAC and discrete linear psu were factored in. Plus the buying and selling and time involved. I think you are on the right track addressing room acoustics as a relatively inexpensive way to upgrade your system. May I suggest that get a quality SMPS, untreat your reflective walls to brighten up your room abit, pay attention to where your standmounts are, save your money and upgrade to a Transporter (about $1500 on Audiogon) which saves all the mucking around searching for improvement. If I didn't have need of a one box solution for video/audio then I certainly would have a Transporter in preference to the modded SB3/External Dac/PSU path that everyone seems to go for. Lastly Pro Audio or at least Prosumer audio does work remarkably well for a fraction of the price of hi fi. I figure if it's good enough to master from it certainly should be good enough to play back with. At least so it has been for me. Thanks for the reply Tom - unfortunately given my lack of knowledge it doesn't help me too much. Balanced XLR out's arecompared to RCA's . Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Amplifier suggestions on low budget...
G'day Ron I have a Trends running with an external DAC into 87db sensitivity ribbon tweeter speakers. All I can say is wow. The clarity and definition is amazing, soundstage and separation very good and imaging excellent. Close your eye's and you'd swear you were listening to a half decent valve. The little Trends won't drive large volume but is very very musical. Musicality is obviously improved by the external DAC but even with the internal SB DAC the sound is very very nice. Great midrange and tight definition if tending a little bright - but then again that's my non oversampling DAC going about it's business. You will be very happy with the Trends - it small, always on and best of all is really really cheap. Want more? Hook it up to an external 12v Battery supply. The sound transforms to a thing of beauty. Ditto the SB - get a decent 5v 1.5amp adapter. Oh and don't skimp on the interconnects - it does make a difference. Ditto re isolation - blue tack the amp (you'll need to anyway to stop it moving) to a resonance free surface or better still tack it to an isolating surface ( at worst a 1inch thick piece of MDF, at best a 1/2 thick piece of marble) and isolate that from resonance by 4 1/2 squash balls) Wouldn't recommend it for rock, drum and bass etc - it hasn't got the horsepower to drive deep Hz. I listen to 90 % Classical and Opera and it's perfect. Suffers abit on organ. Drop me a line if you want more info. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Amplifier suggestions on low budget...
weee ... it all depends on your definition of bass. I like my drum and bass etc with a powered subwoofer (preferably 2) where you feel the beat as opposed to hearing it regardless of volume. But it's rare that I listen to it these days... getting old! Your Mission 702e's are great budget speakers but aren't reknown for their bass extension and I suspect that whatever you drive them with you may suffer a little in that department. But less horsepower is not a good thing when you listen to rock etc so I don't think a Trends would be so good. My speakers were bought specifically to match the Trends and for the Aurum Cantus Ribbon tweeter they have, not the bass woofer which is only a 5 1/2 inch short throw. They also cost 6 times as much as the Trends to put some perspective on it and were also bought with future expansion to a grunty 70w integrated tube amp in mind as funds allow. The Trends was, for me, designed as an interim solution that was to be retired once the big tube amp I had in mind arrived in a year or so. Mind you, now I've had the Trends for a few months I am really happy with it's sound more particularly after I hooked it up to an $60 external 12v battery supply. I can't see myself wanting to spend $2-3000 on a 70w tube amp any time soon. A Transporter on the other hand The Trends gives me (most of) the warmth and musicality of a half decent 15-20w tube amp at a fraction of the cost. The difference is your musical choice and speakers aren't really suited to a low power amp solution. Given you arn't going to change your speakers any time soon - and really why would you? they are really pretty decent especially for the price - then I would go for a bulletproof plain vanilla second hand integrated like a Rotel RA 04, a Cambridge 540 or a NAD 320 BEE (which should be had for peanuts on ebay). Again at this end of life the subtleties aren't going to matter too much. Good cables, good interconnects and a good basic integrated and away you go. Actually as I think about it having your speakers I would hunt down a second hand NAD 320 BEE, get decent (as opposed to expensive) cabling(as to which pick up a copy of a hi fi mag and see what they recommend in your country- QED is pretty reasonable in the UK) and plan on adding a good external DAC (or modding the SB DAC) down the track. After all what goes to your amp and speakers will determine what you hear. DAC's are a whole other ball game and there is lots of info in this forum on them. My Trends TA 10.1 is, when coupled with there own dedicated 12v power supply and the right speakers, a very cheap entry into true hi fi. But you have to couple it with the right speakers for your choice of music and preferably a good DAC. If I listened to rock I would have gone for something like a Kilpsch Floorstander with twin 6.2 inch woofers and a horn. 95 db sensitivity into 8ohms. Perfect. I suspect that for your needs you may be disappointed by the Trends but almost certainly will not be by a second hand Rotel, Cambridge or NAD. Most of all enjoy your music! the SB really is something. Lastly don't make any critical judgements about your system till you have at least 50 hrs burn in up on the board. My speakers took 150hrs before they opened up their extension. I took the weekend off and left my stereo running at moderate volume playing FM radio before i listened to any real music. Hope this helps.
