Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Hifi rack: wood or glass shelves?
bought the atacama rack. Not sure I'm that happy - the glass seems to vibrate a huge amount, though not audibly. What is audible is the increased sibilance which is very disappointing. Also somewhat surprising as I'm not using anything mechanical. Thinking a) either room correct again or b) go for the wooden podium racks. Just seems that solid 4cm wood shelves probably won't vibrate nearly as much. -- twheatley twheatley's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=5167 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=84313 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] TP-Tact-Dac minimal jitter?
thanks as ever Phil. Yes, currently using the stock TACT PSU (didn't know it was that poor) - BUT I'm using a PS Audio Power Plant Premier to regenerate AC as the system front end. Would this avoid most of the drawbacks from the stock TACT PSU? I read your other threads about AES/EBU implementation but assumed this was a TP problem primarily and that this was not the case for other equipment? The manual for the Perfectwave DAC suggests that AES/EBU XLR is the preferred digital connection for it - I'm lost! -- twheatley twheatley's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=5167 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=82171 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles
Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] DACs : unmodded Transporter vs Perfectwave DAC?
many thanks for your thoughts. Michael - I think you're right about the PWD in terms of soundstage. Even with a head-cold it sounds much more lifelike and spacious. The integrated bridge really does seem the way to go, however I need room correction and currently use a TACT mini for that - which of course won't work with the bridge. -- twheatley twheatley's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=5167 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=82155 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Transporter and Tact RCS 2.2X
so I've been thinking further about the effects of 24/96 conversion at the server level. Could it be that the improvement in sound could be due to the volume adjustment being turned on. Just thinking that if the SBS upsampled to 24/96 THEN performed the volume adjustment, any gain reduction would have a lower impact on quality as processing was done at 24bits as opposed to 16? just a thought. -- twheatley twheatley's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=5167 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=70166 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Transporter and Tact RCS 2.2X
Not sure I understand - I don't seem to have that problem. I always leave the transporter out at 100 and use the tact to control the volume that's fed back into the transporter. For what you suggest to happen the transporter would have to control the volume digital output of the tact. My setup is: TP digital out to Tact Mini digital input (terminal 1) Tact mini balanced output to TP digital in TP analogue out to Simaudio W5 amp Sounds awesome. -- twheatley twheatley's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=5167 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=70166 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles
Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Transporter and Tact RCS 2.2X
Phil - Many thanks for this advice. I completely agree that I'm running a huge risk with this - I just assumed that the Transporter (having been around for a couple of years now) was stable enough to warrant direct connection. I used to run a SB3 to Benchmark DAC1 to Simaudio P5 preamp, bt found the sound SO much better without the pre-amp that I sold it and injected directly from the DAC1. I am using the balanced outputs of the TP. Using an inline attenuator seems a neat way to avoid blow outs, but is a reduction of only 10db enough? When I was running the audio out of the tact comfortable listening was around 71 on the display, now running it out of the TP it's about 81. So I'm guessing I've still got room even with attenuators to go a little further if needed? Which attenuator would you recommend - Rothwell, or better (if makes a difference)? -- twheatley twheatley's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=5167 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=70166 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles
Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Transporter and Tact RCS 2.2X
thanks - will try the Rothwells for a start. I can't thank you guys enough - I have moved closer to hifi nirvana in the last week than I have in the last 2 years. Now - for the final tweak I really need to master the Tact. I've been using the beta PC software for the last year (using the quick set up feature) and I've found it pretty good. As far as I can see, no major steps are missed. The only point I've seen on other forums is to make the the filter peaks at 0db - yet I can only find a tool to shift the target curve up or down (or am I being dump, and this will achieve the same thing). Also - if I'm placing the microphone for different listening positions closer or further away from the speaker, does the software adjust the mic gain accordingly? Are there any good online guides (other than the Tact site) or forum threads to get the most out of the Tact RCS? As I said - so far, what I've learnt from you all has been invaluable (even the wife can hear the difference) - I'm just looking to make sure no stone is left unturned. By the way, as a small contribution to your thoughts, can I suggest you give the PS Audio Power Plant Regenerator a go? I've tried various passive power supply filters in the past to little avail. This thing is just beautiful - especially given the poor power we get fed in London with noticeable harmonic distortion. Give them a call and at least test it for a couple of weeks - I was EXTREMELY suspicious, but it totally suprised me. -- twheatley twheatley's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=5167 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=70166 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles
Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Transporter and Tact RCS 2.2X
Thanks all - well, a fascinating weekend. This thread was what really pushed me over the edge to order a transporter - and I can highly recommend it. All in all, a superb piece of kit and I feel I can now get the most out of it thanks to your advice. I also confirm that whether the upsampling is done at server or Tact level makes no difference to my ear. However, as to whether to use the DAC in the Tact Mini or the Transporter, well that's another matter. To me it's the transporter hands down. I particularly like the way the effect loop has been implemented, whereby the Transporter volume control has no effect on the digital input (am I right?). Effectively this means using the Tact as the master volume control which does 2 things: a) the Tact can still be used as a digital pre-amp, aggregating all digital sources (CD player, TP etc) and b) means Dynamic Room Correction (i.e. volume dependent) can still be used. -- twheatley twheatley's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=5167 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=70166 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles
Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Transporter and Tact RCS 2.2X
Getting my Transporter tomorrow - currently using a Tact Mini as my pre-amp (driven digitally by an SB3), but it would seem that the internal layout is suboptimal when compared to the RCS 2.2XP. Looking forward to seeing how it sounds when I use it purely for digital room correction and use the Transporter's DAC. One question I have though, when I tried running the Tact Mini into a Benchmark DAC-1 it sounded distorted as if it was being overdriven - anyone else have this problem? Also, can I assume that the Tact volume of 99.9 is equal to 100%? Are there any other setings on the Tact I need to change? Very intrigued to try the server 24/96 upsampling too. -- twheatley twheatley's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=5167 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=70166 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles
