Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Audiophile wanna-be

2007-07-20 Thread alZmtbr

tyler_durden edited his original post from crank to meth

With 5 functioning bicycles and 2 non-rideable, and with wifey's 2
cycles, I can say we are crank addicts, but not too 'pedantic' about
it. The velo-habit also competes with the winter season ski-habit (3
pairs of downhill skis and 'many' XC ski's). So when at home I mainly
just listen to the music, not tweak the gear.

Tho last night it was raining, so swapped out the kimber speaker cable
and put the old garden hose audioquest back in. Gonna cut the kimber in
half, re-terminate. Then bi-wire, bi-amp - just for 'fun'.

Cheers!

Was it by chance, the ridiculously fat Audio Quest Clear with the

Make a nuisance of yourself by visiting audiodphile dealers and
listening to their advice.

Try to buy something from them as its an expensive business being an
audiophile dealer.

Read lots of magazines.

To be a real audiophile try listening to your music rather than your
system.

Visit lots of websites,

After a couple of months you can either

1. Listen to some music.

2. Drive yourself mad trying to make your system turn the listening
experience into a mind changing delight.

Please note there are lots of nice people in the audiophile world, but
also a lot of nutters. (respect to normal nutters) who are annoying
little bores who should have a spiky audiophile amplifier shuvved where
the sun don't shine.

Maintain a sense of reality and keep a sense of humour.

PS Don't mention power supplies, DACs, in any posts.

Last, last but not least, make sure you bone up on quantum mechanics.

Anyone ever notice how many audiophiles are deeply effected by quantum

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Audiophile wanna-be

2007-07-19 Thread Videodrome

I've been on both sides of the audio hobby: As a junkie; and as a
dealer who sold stuff to other junkies to support their habit.
What an interesting mix of people I met along the way!

In the interest of trying to write a somewhat concise summary of what I
think being an audiophile SHOULD be about, I submit the following lists
for your consideration:

(1) When things are going right:

You have an operating system.
You're reasonably happy with how it sounds.
You enjoy listening to music, and you keep looking for new music.
You have a rich, meaningful life, complete with friends, spouse/S.O.,
family, etc.
You have other hobbies.
You don't spend all your disposable income on audio gear.
You know people will never understand why, unlike them, you're not
content with an boombox or an iPod, and you really don't care.

(2) When things are going awry:

Your system's down, because:
You're never happy with it; and so
You're constantly buying / auditioning new gear to get the sound
right.
You don't listen to much other than a handful of tracks on proven demo
CDs because you're perpetually evaluating gear.
You're a loner who spends most of your time hanging out in audio
stores, listening to gear (usually making snide remarks about how
unlike music it sounds) and/or at home, sitting in the sweet spot
listening to music by yourself -- in a dimly lit room.
You don't have any other hobbies (for the aforementioned reasons)
All you extra dough goes to gear. Matter of fact, your '71 VW Bug
really needs a new radiator, but you blew $400 bucks on silver
interconnects.
You can't believe (insert name of: friend, boss, family member )is
listening to that crap system, so you try to convert them.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Audiophile wanna-be

2007-07-18 Thread amcluesent

That being said, I really would like to learn...

Try reversing the connection on your speaker cables, so the end
connected to the amp is connected to the speaker and vice-versa.

If you hear a dramatic difference then your cable is 'directional' and
you are ready to be an audiophile.

There are simply two kinds of audiophiles. Ones that listen , the others
that don't. And Peter Asszell.. boy does he seem pissed, he is just
one big walking chip on the shoulder, always has been. Playing with
good audio gear is supposed to be fun, listening to music is supposed
to be a good time. I really don't much enjoy any zealots. I hear a
difference , you don't , so what, it's my wallet. Robert Harleys book
is a good primer, so is Laura Dearborns.

Pissed and with a chip on his shoulder? That's about the clearest case
of the pot calling the kettle black I've ever seen.

Aczel simply points out some rather obvious facts, although in a not
very polite way I'll grant you. That certainly shouldn't stop anyone
from buying what they want, anymore than noting that a Casio keeps more
accurate time than a Rolex will stop anyone from buying an expensive
watch. But I've never seen a Rolex ad try to claim otherwise - mostly
it's just nice looking models wearing watches. What makes audio a bit
nastier is that the manufacturers of some of these products actually
try to claim they improve the sound quality.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Audiophile wanna-be

2007-07-18 Thread ErikM

Ah gimme a break.. He writes an article full of his opinions and you
call them facts??!! Good guys vs Bad guys.. He calls William Johnson
of ARC a bad guy are you kidding me? Do you remeber how piss poor the
solid state preamps of the early 70's were as compared to the SP3's or
David Wilson a bad guy cause Wilson builds expensive speakers; oh FYI
Wilson wouldn't send any of his speakers to Asszell to review so he
slams him, Ray Kimber one of the nicest guys out there etc, etc but he
thinks Ken Phoulman is a good guy.. he's one of the reviews who kept
saying digital was perfect and that all cd players sounded alike until
his credabilty on that was so shot he started to hear that maybe some
players do sound different from one another.. Asszell has an agenda a
mile long always has. And yes a Casio does keep better time than
Rolex... Think your son would treasure that as he would your Rolex ?
It's not always about the cost, somtimes we measure things with our
hearts..
