kjg Wrote: Isn't that what transcoding is? :) I think the difference in this case is that FLAC decoding, being lossless, just restores the original data, which would then be encoded in WMA. I would only consider it transcoding if you are going from one lossy compression to another. The issue with transcoding is that it compounds compression artifacts, but with FLAC, there ain't no such artifacts, so regardless of the semantics of whether or not we call it transcoding, going from FLAC to WMA is no worse than just ripping to WMA. -- TiredLegs TiredLegs's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=6201 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=24987 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

It seems as though dbPowerAmp will transcode FLAC to all types of WMA. Check them out at http://www.dbpoweramp.com/. tamanaco wrote: I looked and searched (as much as I could) in the Hydrogenaudio forum and the foobar forum for specific instructions on converting lossless Flac to loosy VBR WMA, but I could not find specific instructions. I'm still waiting for a answer to a post I placed in the MediaCoder forum regarding the error that I'm getting with that tool. There's gotta be a better way to do this. kjg Wrote: It seems as though dbPowerAmp will transcode FLAC to all types of WMA. Thanks kjg, yes, DbpowerAMP transcodes FLAC to WMA. Unless I find a better alternative, it looks like I'll be ripping to FLAC using EAC and then selecting (clicking) a subset of these files using explorer and right-clicking the selected files to invoke Dbpower to convert them to WMA. I was looking for a tool(s) or script that could work in conjunction with EAC to rip the full album to FLAC and a full set or subset of the songs of the same CD to WMA in a few clicks. My assumptions, correct me if I'm wrong, was that the tools suggested here (MediaCore, foobar and Mareo) would coordinate these tasks, to some degree, with EAC. I'm just looking for a way to streamline the process as it's taking a long time to rip all my CDs. My next task is to give Mareo a few twists. Thanks again... -- tamanaco tamanaco's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=4620 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=24987 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

I'm starting to suspect that the WME does not transcode directly from Flac. I'm new at this audio file conversion stuff. Wouldn't make a difference. What FooBar (or any other app you are using to transcode) is actually just decoding and re-encoding seamlessly. The FLAC file is being decoded by flac.exe and the resulting data is being pumped into the encoder that is generating the WMAL file. I use the flac2mp3.pl Perl script to transcode my FLAC files to MP3. When i open the task manager i see both flac.exe and lame.exe consuming processor cycles. opaqueice, ceejay, thanks... I'll be playing with these tools as soon as I get a chance. I'll do anything (except paying someone else) to reduce the number of steps/time I need to rip my CDs. Currently, I have a four step process. 1.- Rip CD to flac using EAC 2.- Use foobar to add Replaygain 3.- Use WMP to get the album art 4.- (new step) Using one of the tools recommended here to rip or convert a subset of the albums' tracks to WMA for my DAP. 5.- Move/Copy the resulting ripped files to the Slimserver and to the laptop I use to copy music to my DAP I'm currently using two laptops and my Slimserver computer to rip 3 cds at a time. Sometimes while ripping one CD and moving to the next computer I forget if I have already removed the leading/trailing silence gaps or if I have already used foobar to add Replaygain. Beside the tools suggested here, I'm also going to look at Album Art Aggregator to see if it saves me some time. It would be nice if someone out there has already found a way to make the five steps above a ONE-CLICK process after inserting the CD. I know that for the wma subset I'd have select which songs I want for my DAP, but that should make my nightmare a two step process. So far I've been spending most of my time off ripping CDs... The wife is starting to question the wisdom of digitizing all these CDs at the cost of my (our) summer leisure time. Last words out of her mouth... When are you going to find time to LISTEN to the music? -- tamanaco tamanaco's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=4620 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=24987 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

MAREO is a great tool for ripping to multiple formats automatically (I rip to FLAC and VBR mp3 for portables). Can be a little tricky to get setup but once setup requires no maintenance, it just works in the background getting the job done. I set it to send FLACs to one directory and MP3s to a separate one, then I use the MP3 directory for my portable devices. Won't foobar convert to wma for you (I've used it to batch-convert FLAC to MP3 successfully)? -- joncourage SlimServer Version: 6.5b1 - 6939 - Windows XP - EN - cp1252 Player Firmware Version: 41 SB3 Audio Note DAC 3.1x Sig Levinson 383 integrated Amphion Argons joncourage's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2837 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=24987 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

I think I read somewhere that EAC can be configured to Rip to more than one format at time. Does anyone know where I can find detailed information on how to do this? Using flac the process of digitizing my library is taking more time than I thought. I would like to kill two birds with one stone if possible. I want to rip the full CDs to flac and a subset of the tracks (the songs I want in my dap) to wma. Thanks mediacoder (http://mediacoder.sourceforge.net/) is a very nice, free tool for transoding which supports FLAC and WMA among many formats. You can easily batch transcode groups of files, which may be more convenient than trying to rip to two formats at once. -- opaqueice opaqueice's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=4234 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=24987 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
